It's soon time to kick off the 3rd annual OS2 World award event, but before doing so we would like to figure out if there should be some updates regarding the Nomination Categories. Should we remove or change any of the current categories or even add a new one ?

Here is the list of categories from last event:

- Best Supporting OS/2 Company
- Best Commercial Software of the Year
- Best Individual Software of the Year
- Honor Award for Individuals
- Best OS/2 Site of the Year

Post your opinions so we can start the nominations for the 3rd event as soon as possible. For last years results.

Well, do not post your nominations yet, this will be done by using a web form next week . But, what I would like to ask if there should be more award categoiries. I would like to suggest Best *nix Port of the Year or Best *nix Port for OS2 either way I think some how there is a lot of people doing a hard work to port applications to OS2. I think they should be mentioned as well.

Huh, based on a news at os2.org I thought you are looking for nominations!? Next time I will read your announce carefully...

The categories are okay, I think less is more. Otherwise there are more categories than os/2 developments [bad joke].

I second that motion. Normally, I would suggest not to use too many categories, but these people really deserve an award and they probably will never get one otherwise due to the strange hostility which quite a few people exhibit when it comes to ported software.

To make it perfectly clear: The original post was NOT by anyone working for or involved with any of the companies mentioned, nor with any company that could be seen as being 'silently mentioned'.

I apologize if anyone has gotten into undeserved trouble because of this post.

Alternative:
Worst OS/2 Company award 2003:
1.) Serenity Systems (eCS) - for shitting on their so-called business partners
2.) SciTech Software - for not accepting a bit of competition and for attempting to ruin another OS/2 company using DirtyTricks™ and FUD™
3.) Golden Code - for wasting a perfectly good opportunity to create something *really* good (Java 1.4.1) together with the other leading OS/2 development company, and screwing up what could have been a good partnership

Sorry, but I'm just too pissed off seeing how people and companies are trying to break each others necks these days.

Hmm.. ok, Worst OS2 Company would be interesting, but then again Microsoft would win this category all the time Well, pleeease maintain friendly tone at least within this thread. Not that I say that you're not allowed to write whatever you want - you are. But, my original question was to get suggestions about new Categories.

Agree with some of above and some not... but, I'll leave that for the other thread.

Happy posting!

Could you be more specific? I'm quite interested in this, especially the second one, as I am not aware of Scitech doing such things. Regarding Golden Code: From what I heard the "split" was more related to Innotek insisting on using Odin technology. But then that could be wrong. Anyway, it would be nice to know what is/was really going on instead of having to dwell on rumors.

Hmm,

I see several OS/2 companies/programms/authors listed, but I'm p.e. missin:

- Peter Nielsen, author of PMView.
- Brian Havard , author of FileCommander/2
- Sergey Ayukov, author of NFTP
- Eugene Romanenko, author of PMDownloader

This are just a view names what came first above.
There are much more shareware/freeware writers.
So will the "annual" only list the companies listed in first or is it possible
to add "your" favorite

With kind regards,

Henk

Ditto for Java applications/applets and utilities.

I recommend that we encourage Java as a cross-platform tool.

How about a category for 'best Win program that runs with OS/2 Warp and ODIN'?
OS/2 Warp-ed to the very end.

Kim, folks,

what about a "community award" that goes to a person/team of the OS/2 community for "non-programming" achievements?
This could either be someone who is supporting a product though not being the author (like Karlheinz Schmidthaus for his support of ISDN/PM) or the Warpstock Europe organizing team or the editors of the VOICE newsletter or the OS/2 e-zine... or things like this.
Possible nominees should be all persons that are *not authors* of software or company people - just "community" guys to put it this way... know what I mean?

Greetings

And dont forget awards for ClassicRexx, ObjectRexx, NetRexx, Speedpascal, Pearl, Javascript etc. [wink].

I think the programming language is very unimportend, only the result counts. And the lending out should be an award for very special and high quality software and very special folks behind, not for pre alpha software with along to do list. So I'm a little bit dizzy about the suggestions of some other folks here in the list.

I think SSI should be number #1 because without them sciTech Software
wouldn't be as nearly as valuable.

Without mentioning names (why spoil the fun already) but would there actually be enough people to nominate so that we can have at least 5 good names ? Thinking out loud here just so we end up with a category that we only have 2 or 3 nominees...

Well, encourage Java development is something I also think would be a great idea. There is lots of Java applications still to be tested and used together with OS2. But, shouldn't Java apps be able to compete within the other categories ?

I don't think that would be a problem. There are enough people who have assembled extremely valuable information on their web sites, written documentation and how-tos, written excellent articles for magazines, created a platform for developers, etc. etc. I think I could easily list 10 names.

Well, here is the final list of categories that we will use:

- Best Unix Port of the Year
- Best Commercial Software of the Year
- Best Java Application of the Year
- Best Site of the Year
- Best Supporting Company of the Year
- Best Individual Software of the Year
- Honor Award for Individuals

If I get OK on the nomination form tonight, we'll kick it off then later tonight or tomorrow.

Regarding Community Award I would recommend that we use the Honor Award for Individuals since this is what it wcould be used for.

More info to be posted later.

Kim, please make that "Unix" instead of "*nix". Many people want understand it otherwise and the registered trademark is UNIX in capital letters.
