Hi all, I have converted some windows icons files to os/2 format using iconplus and I am running at 40x40(using scitech snap) but the size of the icons are 16,32 and 48. Is there a way to resize the 48x48 icons in these files to 40x40 or am I going to have to recreate the icon files myself? Can the icons be resized with the icon editor?

regards,
adam

I've done this recently. I used three different ways depending on the source file:

  1. winico92.zip to convert the icons. This does a reasonable job of the conversion, but, there were a lot more resolutions in the Windows icon files than it understands. Most of these weren't converted properly, and, had to open the icons in the IconEditor and remove them.
  2. Using PMView to save the icon as an OS/2 icon. Unfortunately, it only saves one resolution at a time. So, I had to open the Windows Icon, view each resolution and save it to a file. Then I opened them in the IconEditor and and used the clipboard to paste them into one icon file.
  3. Use PMView to view the Windows icon. Then I used the clipboard to copy resolution I wanted into the a new icon in the IconEditor.

Unfortunately, none of these methods are perfect. The first one is the quickest (winico can convert a whole directory of icons), and if the icon resolutions match the OS/2 ones, it does a good job. I used the other two methods when the icon formats didn't match as well. Or, when I was using a source other than a Windows icon. The sources for the icons I was trying to convert had Windows and Linux icons. I took from both depending on what I needed.

One important thing is that I had to edit the icons after any of the conversion. None of the conversions where perfect. I had to fiddle with the results a lot to get rid of jagged edges and other defects.

Well converting the icons with iconplus wasn't a problem - they look pretty good. I just want to resize the 48x48 to 40x40s. Of course I guess I could just go back to using 32x32 since those are there. Oh well, I guess I'll just do. It's not that big of a deal.

Resizing was one of the problems I was trying to overcome. Getting a 40*40 icon is a lot of work as there doesn't seem to be used by any other system. I think I decided it was better to size up from 32*32 to 40*40 rather than down. But, it's also good to supply 16*16 as this is what is used for the system icon in the title bar.

The other problem I had was trying to find icons for all the things that OS/2 has. I was trying to make a complete icon scheme in eCS to match Mozilla theme I was using. There where a lot of Windows icons available, but, I not enough for what I wanted. I had to resort to using the PNG icons supplied for Linux and building OS/2 icons from them.
