since the latest component updates (april + november) my systems didn't boot : Trap 000e NVCHOOK.SYS ver 1.21

I replaced NVCHOOK.SYS with an older version (1.20) and everthing seems to be OK.

I 'detected' an undocumented parameter for NVCHOOK.SYS ver 1.21 .

"/EX:xxxx" = "size given for exclude file heap" !?

Playing around with this parameter my computer boot up again.

xxxx < 1230 : Trap 000e NVCHOOK.SYS
xxxx > 1260 : NVCHOOK has loaded but Trap 000e OS2KRNL

xxxx = 1250 : succes !

Any idea about this parameter ?

Information received from Norman Anti Virus :

/Q |Quiet, don't print copyright info when booting.

/EX:size
Set the size of memory to be allocated for the exclude list.
Size is the number of bytes to set aside for the exclude list heap.
The minimum value to set aside is 1024 bytes, the maximum is 65535
bytes (64kB). The default size is 4069 (4kB). For most users 4kB
should be more than sufficient, you may want to adjust this
parameter if you know that you have very few or a lot of entries in
the exclude list. |

Hi geert,
after downloading and applying the latest upgrades for Norman Antivirus, I noticed several programs crashed unexpectedly.
I did not have the crash on boot you're reporting on NVCHOOK.
Yesterday I was enabling Full Hardware Detection at the boot options menu, and suddenly NVCHOOK crashed at boot.

Hence my first question: do you have Full Hardware Detection always enabled?

Then I REMmed NVCHOOK out of config.sys, so I was able to boot with Full Hardware Detection enabled, and suddenly all the application crashes were gone. Unexpectedly, Norman Antivirus was still working correctly, even with the on-acces scanner enabled.

Hence my second question: what is the purpose of NVCHOOK? Are others experiencing these crashes? Is Norman aware of these problems?

Thankyou!
Bye

Cris

hei Cris,

yes, Full Hardware detectionallways enabled.

I also REM'd NVCHOOK before I found that undocumented parameter

Purpose of NVCHOOK : I think it will something HOOK; maybe it keep the program running during an update I guess.

because the developer can not reproduce some errors they need a max of input!

Hi Geert,
I had a reply from Norman, though it's not what I had hoped to see: they say my country (Italy) isn't one of those european countries serviced by their "customer satisfaction" program. I think this is an automated reply, and they probably didn't even read my message.
I'll try writing to the support address you sent me... hope they'll reply in english

Thankyou
Bye
