Is there or will there be an OS/2 port of the open source of Star Office? The above url is the open source site of Star Office by Sun Microsystems.

Is there anyone planning an OS/2 port of the Star Office beta open source code? (inquiring minds want to know [especially mine]).

I heard that there was a group working on porting Open Office to OS/2. Is it true? Are they still working on it?

I find native programs (for OS/2) work better than ones where it works with an emulation of some sort).

Do you have a web site or url to a web site/page where the OS/2 port of Open Office is or will be? Inquiring minds want to know (I have spread the news at other sites/discussion groups and they want to know more about it).

In fact there already two projects running. Fipa and myself have just discusses the beginning, and I sincerely hope we can merge the two projects, since that would fasten the whole development of OpenOffice/2.

I have been looking at porting OpenOffice.org to OS/2 and eCS since December of 2002. At that time I was informed that the very first step required to get the port going was to find a compiler for OS/2 and eCS that could use the STLport libraries. Just recently I heard that the newest version of gcc for OS/2 and eCS might be able to do this. OpenWatcom does not currently fully support STLport (last time I checked was August). I have been trying to find people who are interested in working on the project but the three or four people that I contacted were having the same problems.

If you want information about what needs to be done to get OpenOffice.org ported to OS/2 take a look at the Porting message lists at OpenOffice.org and search for OS/2 or eCS. I am currently brushing up my programming skills in the hopes that I can help with the port to OS/2 and eCS.

Another problem that I ran into during my attempts at getting something started was the fact that OpenOffice.org partially works using certain versions of ODIN. Therefore, the people that I talked to suggested just working on the ODIN version. I much prefer the idea of a native version though.

I look forward to hearing of any progress that is made, even if it is just to indicate a compile that can handle the STLport libraries.

Hmm,

I would allso like to have a native OpenOffice version, but unfortunally I'm no programmer so I could not help ya.
But what I've seen with the ported versions with Odin of Adobe Acrobat Reader and the recent Java-versions, give me good hope. So I was pleasant supprised to see this on the eCS list and on Voice-news...

Serenity Systems, NorthLAN Solutions, and Innotek Systemberatung recently
concluded an agreement to, "make Open Office support available to OS/2
users". While complete details of this agreement remain confidential, we
do know that Innotek will be doing the development and that Serenity will
offer the product to end users through its reseller channel.

Innotek's Oliver Stein will be making a presentation at Warpstock 2003
during which he will demo the code, tell us what Open Office is, and what
the OS/2 specifics are. He'll also be covering the results of their first
tests (" ... the performance will be really impressive.") and how
Innotek's great font engine can be used to get the best possible WSIWYG
on-screen display. Oliver will also be clarifying the timings of expected
beta and General Availability roll-outs of this exciting new choice for
OS/2 and eCS office productivity software users!

With kind regards,

Henk/2

Okay, I must admit that this confuses me a bit?! :?

How is it that they will be selling a product that is Open Source? OpenOffice.org (as it is called at OpenOffice.org) is an opensource project.

I have been continually watching the porting e-mail lists at OpenOffice.org looking for others interested in creating a native port of OpenOffice.org for OS/2 and eCS. There has not been a relevant post in more than five months. The only posts made recently have been asking to remove the OS/2 specific code from the CVS so that it can be a smaller download.

I am very interested to learn that there may be actual progress in the porting of the software. Please keep posting any information that you find out about porting attempts.

The same way RedHat (and others) sell Linux which is open source/free?

Please excuse my naivety, but how do they do that? Is it similar to the way that I can purchase a CD version of OpenWatcom if I do not want to spend my time downloading it?

Firstly, I haven't read the OpenOffice license, so, I don't know exactly what the rules they have to abide from. I do seem to remember that the license Sun uses is a bit different to others.

Chances are what they will be selling is more of a service. i.e. the ability to report bugs and then get them fixed. That's effectilvey what they are doing with their other free software - GCC, Java, Acrobat Reader and the Font library. Each of these I can use for free, but, I can only expect support if I buy a number of licenses. GGC is the only one I can get source for, so it may be the best one to compare the OpenOffice port with.

Also, Sun still sell StarOffice. This is based on the OpenOffice codebase, but, it is not open source. It's possible that this is what Innotek will be using. I don't think that this is the case, but, it's possible.

More interesting to me is, how are they doing the port? Is is like the Acrobat Reader and Java ports (a special ODIN wrapper around Windows executables). Is it a build of the source with GCC (with OS/2 specific code changes in OpenOffice)? Or is it a build of the source using ODIN libraries/source so that they don't have to change all the source to OS/2 specific? This last would effectively produce an OS/2 native executable that is build from Windows native code. I think this was one of the ODIN goals, but, I've never heard of it actually being done.

Sorry, but, what does "ODIN Smartport" mean? Are they porting from OpenOffice source (meaning they will compile the OpenOffice from source code with the help of ODIN libraries)? Or, are they adding an ODIN based wrapper around the already compiled OpenOffice binaries? As you compare it to their Acrobat Reader port, then it's the latter. But, I hope not.

I now see that smartport is the wrong word ... it will be performed via a Odin wrapper, just like the Acrobat Reader Kit.... Sorry!
