1. OS/2 gateway/router box
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
I got mad at my Linksys router last night, dug up an old Gateway 2000 (P/166) machine I had, tried to install Linux on it (and Linux kept crashing!), so I put Warp 4.52 on it (go figure .

I installed two NICs in it and am wanting to make this machine into my LAN router/gateway.

I have Zampa here for the firewall stuff, but I haven't messed with it much. What I'm wondering is this: can I set up NAT, et al, without having to resort to purchasing a third-party program under OS/2? I've never done this before and would certainly like to do it. I don't have the money to be purchasing additional extras like programs either, so I'm doing this on the cheap end of the scale. <G>

I know what I want to do and I know how to do the firewall end of it, however, I'm not sure about NAT stuff under OS/2. I've got one card being the Internet connection and another card statically assigned 192.168.1.1 (for the LAN). I've a switch for the rest of the systems to connect to also.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

NAT is not part of the OS/2 firewall. You need either Injoy Firewall (www.fx.dk) or safefire (Hobbes) in order to handle the NAT end of things. My gateway/router is an OS/2 machine and performance is subperb even on a large (20-30) user high-bandwith intensive lan.

I don't know of a way to do NAT in OS/2 without InJoy FireWall or Safefire. I'm using Injoy.

But, if the purpose is simply to be able to browse the web, you can proxy servers for it. You could run Squid or Smartcache for this. For mail, I believe you could use Weasel on the server to retrieve any accounts, and then retrieve to a local machine from there. From memory, there is an FTP proxy somewhere as well.

If you have a small home network check this article out. Shows you how to turn an os/2 box into a dhcp server and router.

http://www.os2ezine.com/20030216/page_4.html

For routing in os/2 check out. See section 6.1.2.

You said you have the firewall part down then this should set you up and running.

I was already tinkering with Injoy Firewall, but I couldn't fine safefire on Hobbes (did a search for "safefire").

I'll probably just save up and use InJoy Firewall-looks like what I need.

Thanks,
Sean
