What kind of printer is it that you need to print to, ie brand? If it's a postscript based printer you should be able to print to almost any PS based printer if you know the details to the printer queue and if you have proper access. Check following thread if it's just how to set up a network printer.

For a a Postscript printer, you need to set up the network shares so it's available on the OS/2 networked machines. If Warp doesnt have a driver for that printer, then check out the newest (non-subscription) IBM drivers (available on Hobbes and elsewhere) which include a printer profile definition conversion utility (.PPD file util) that will allow you to add that printer to the postscript driver set. Earlier versions may have also included the utility but I couldn't say for sure. I think the version number is 30.080 and you can find it easily searching the software news archives here or by searching hobbes.

If you grab the epdf-postscript driver version instead of the unmodified IBM version (based off IBM's v30.080) it also adds a generic epdf printer that will allow you to enter in any paper size and use it in conjunction with pdf creation tools such as Ghostscript, allowing you to "kill 2 birds with one stone" (assuming pdf creation is something else you may be interested in).

Post more about the networking end and someone can help with that if there's where the problem is. Remember to include how the printer is hooked up to the network (to a windows machine? which win version? to a print server? to an ethernet hub?)

HTH,
- Rob

Hi all,

not sure, but... does the question maybe rather refer to network and printer sharing...?
From what I've understood, the printer is attached to a windows machine and that machine is networked to the os/2 machine.
So the main problem might not be the printer driver but how to set up the network shares for that machine/printer in a way that os/2 can "see" the printer... Franzel, is *that* the problem?

Greetings
Thomas

Can you already access shares on the Windows machines from OS/2? If not, go and read http://www.visi.com/~rsteiner/sea.htm to get this set-up.

Once you can look at the Windows machine from OS/2, there is no real difference to allow OS/2 to use a printer, than allowing another Windows machine to use it. Simply create a share for the printer on the Windows machine. I've just done this in WinXP, and it was simply a matter of right clicking on the printer, selecting "Sharing..." from the menu and entering a name for the share.

Back on OS/2, open the Templates folder, and drag a "Network Printer" template out and drop it somewhere. You will then be prompted for the server and resource name. After entering these, you should be prompted for the printer driver. After selecting this, the printer is created, and you should be able to use it.

Franzel,

according to your nickname and the email-adress in your profile, you're likely to be from Germany... so just to make sure everything will work:
(network) "shares" means "Datei- und Druckerfreigabe".
Depending on the Windows version, you might be forced to install the "Datei- und Druckerfreigabe" first, before a menu item "Freigabe..." will appear in a drive/printer's context menu.
(e.g. win9x)
For XP, as davidfor explained correctly, the sharing stuff is enabled by default.

Next, make sure the Netbios workgroup ("Arbeitsgruppe") is the same for the windows machine and the os/2 machine - if not, chances are that the machines won't "see" each other.

Keep us up to date with what's happening and if you have problems. If all fails, send me a private mesage to <<warpcafe [at] yahoo [dot] de>>
( ...die darf dann auch auf Deutsch sein )
