Before I spend way too much time on this system; but are there any particular problems installing eCS v1.2r on this kind of system? The installation CD boots fine and then it ask for the 2nd CD and there it fails and keeps on asking for the 2nd CD. So I guess that the system boots on the CD using bios and from there it's not able to get the usb cd-rom drive to work.

So just wonder if this is one of the mission impossible to get eCS working with X40 and X41 system?

Ultimately, I don't know if eCS will run on the X series or not.
As to not finding the CDROM, make sure that when you boot off of the installation disk that you don't just accept the defaults... go in and make sure that USB CDROM support is turned on (I don't think it was but I don't recall), also make sure USB MSD support is on (required for the CDROM support).

http://forum.thinkpads.com has a section for OS/2. Perhaps there is some one there who has tried it?

Did check that and as far I can see the usb drivers are loaded without any error messages or extensive pauses that sometimes indicate that something is wrong.

I haven't tried installing eCS on an X-series myself, but I was reading the docs from the latest USB basic and USB msd, and I think they might have fixed something to do with installing from USB floppies and CD-ROMs.

Unfortunately, the latest USB is newer than eCS 1.2r, and I don't know how to replace the USB on the installation CD with something newer.

I only have the X31 and that one works great. Installing is causing some headache, as there is no "buildin" CD/DVD-ROM drive.
I've created a bootable USB Key but wasn't able to get a working one lately (maybe related to changes Veit made after Feb. 2005 to the Memdisk stuff).

The easy way is to remove the drive and install it to the desktop computer. Install eCS and put the drive back into the notebook.
This will always work! The X40/41 have 1.8" harddrives, which may be a problem if you want to connect those to the desktop computer. For 2.5" there are adapters available, but I'm not sure those can be plugged into the 1.8" drives.

Neil may be right, try the latest drivers available.
Maybe you can also post the the usb related lines of your CONFIG.SYS.

By the way, why do you need CD 2? Everything needed to install the system should be on CD 1.
I always install software using the network share of the DVD-ROM from my desktop computer.

Will make a pair of new installations diskettes with the latest usb drivers. I only want to give it a try to install eCS on my office system to write a small review. Guess that when it's asking for the CD it's mainly asking for the CD that I booted up on; a while ago I installed eCS v1.2 and can't really recall what it asked for. I'll report back here how it worked out with updated installations diskettes.
