Hi Tom,

My name is Harry, the Corporate Sale's Representative for www.usb007.com in the US. I have been forwarded your inquiry by our head office in Hong Kong.

A quick search on the internet provided me with the information you're
asking. Currently, that system does not support USB memory keys (flash
drives) as seen in the following cut and paste:

This contains a number of in-depth extensive reviews of available OS/2 USB device drivers:

Part1: Basic USB support: controllers;

Part2: Ethernet;

Part3: Divide and conquer... up to 127: Hubs - under construction;

Part4: Memory Keys - coming soon;

Part5: MSDs - coming soon;

Part6: Audio - coming soon;

Part7: Modems - coming soon;

Part8: Printers - under construction;

Part9: Scanners - coming soon;

Thanks,

Harry Marchisheck

Comments : I am hoping your USB thumb drive will work with eComStation (it has USB drivers that make it able to use USB mice and USB keyboards).
"
I had asked about their USB thumb drive and if it could work with eComStation. The above is the reply.

Is there any recomendations for eCS compatible USB thumb drives?

That's interesting that the reply suggests that OS/2 doesn't have USB flash drive / thumb drive support. I've used Lexar USB memory sticks on OS/2 without much difficulty.

Although admittedly, I've had trouble with Impact memory sticks (also made by Lexar, but under their "impact" brand name)...

But overall yes - many USB flash drives work fine with OS/2 provided you install the latest USB drivers.

Hi Tom,
your representative simply quoted a part of the home page of the "OS/2 Warp CHL Website" (http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=usbsite), and he didn't even understand that the "coming soon" was referring to the reviews on the website, NOT to the drivers itself.
Not very professional I'd say... he did a cheap web search and replied with the first information he could get without even understanding it fully.

Bye

Cris

Thanks for the information. I told him I would buy one and try it on my eCS computer.

I did install the latest USB mass storage drivers on my Thinkpad T23 (with eCS 1.1). I tried copying files to a Dell USB thumb drive. It worked. I copied the files to a Dell pc with WinXP and it worked. I have copied files to it and will try it on my eCS Thinkpad.

I uploaded files onto the thumbdrive from a WinXP pc. I was able to download the files my eCS Thinkpad. It worked. The file names were turncated but that was not a problem. I like it better than using diskettes (don't hold much and don't look as cool [in a geeky sort of way]).

I ordered one and will be giving it a try. I will report the results. It was about $35 (including SH) for the 512 meg drive.

I received the USB007 mini drive. It has 512 meg of ram. My Thinkpad T23 with eCS 1.1 does not see the drive. I used the USB resource manager but it does not detect the drive. The light goes on briefly (the light in the drive). I tried it with my Win Gateway 200S and it works with it.

You need to update with the latest USB basic and USM msd. You need to have REMOVABLES set to some sane value like 1 or 2.

I've tried a number of these devices, and they work. With older releases of USB support, fewer of them work. I've had really good luck with SanDisk, even with older releases of USB support.

I'm looking for someone to post their experience with a USB MP3 player. All of the cheap generic ones ought to work. It's likely that none of the name brands will work, unless they are reselling a cheap generic with their brand name on it.

Hi

Not my personal experience but my son has a dual-purpose unit - at my insistence.

It has an mp3 player but can also be used as a mass storage device - data/mp3 files are stored on a removable MultiMedia Card. The card was purchased seperately to the reader.

All I can see on the device is:-

MP3 Digital Audio Player
SD/MMC CardReader
and some text indicating which button does what

On the back it informs me that it was made in taiwan.

Works fine with eCS and Windows.

Sorry to not be more help.

Pete

I have installed the latest USB mass storage drivers but not the latest USB drivers. I will do that and try it again. Thanks for the information.

Some MP3 players have USB drives to store music/files. Perhaps one can remove the USB drive and put it into an USB port as a mass storage device? Has anyone tried uploading music files to one from an eCS pc?

I have no idea if this might help, but I have one thumb drive that I had a very difficult time getting it to work under OS/2 / eCS. In fact, I eventually got it working under Warp 4, but it still refuses to work properly under eCS no matter what drivers I use.

To get it working under Warp 4, what I eventually had to do is use the following:

1. The "base" USB driver from IBM. But... replace the USBD.SYS with the driver that is found in MMPORTV1.ZIP:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=mmportv1&pushbutton=Search

And then use Chris's CW-USB MSD driver for the "mass storage" device driver part:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?sh=1&button=Search&key=cw-usb&stype=all&sort=type&dir=/

Without the USBD.SYS from the MMPORTV1, OS/2 just wouldn't "see" the thumb drive. And any other MSD driver - it might be able to "see" it, but had no luck saving information to it, partitioning it, formatting it, etc.

Hope this helps.

Hi and Thanks to All!
I'm a Wapr 4 user.

No eComStation - simply a longtime user who eventually tries new devices (I'm still using an HP 3p scanner though).

New Digital Camera (if it ever ships) uses Sandisk. I purchased a 1gig Sandisk and then tried to solve how to get it to work with Warp. I also picked up a Pocket Drive Model GFR202SD (for$9 US) from Amazon.

The tips and suggestions in this topic are priceless.

At first I was very frustrated - nothing would work no matter what the combination.

Then I recalled my old advice to customers, find the manual, read the manual, believe the manual (FTM, RTM, BTM). It took a few attempts to believe it - but at last it dawned on me - my new system has front panel USB ports - BUT - these are the not the first two ports.

Once I figured out I had to plug into Port 0, and port 0 was on the back paenl, everything worked right out of the box.

I am using the Chris Wohlgemuth package as distributed. The Sandisk can be used and formatted as FAT or HPFS -

I'm ecstatic! I don't have to upgrade and plain old vanilla Warp4 continues to keep me smiling and happy.

Thanks again
Dave

FWIW

Subsequently I tried the usbd.sys from MMPORTV1.ZIP: and Warp abended immediately.

I'll not pursue that any further.

I tried the FAT32 drivers but it did not see any FAT32 partitions (I had the USB007 USB drive plugged in when it booted).

I will try partitioning the USB007 Drive using my WinPC.

The Imation Wrist Flash drive works with eCS. I can use it to transfer files from my desktop to my T23 (easier than a diskette or a cdr/rw).
