Well, here is a little story that might help you out if you recently or plan to buy a ThinkPad T60 with ATI X1400 graphics chip as I did.

But there seems to be a problem with fan running all the time and after phone call with Lenovo Stockholm they said that much that the fan should NOT be running all the time. So checked around at ThinkPads.com where I found a thread that as well talks about this issue and where other users have problem with the fan spinning all the time and as well that the GPU temperature is a bit high. When I'm not using the system the GPU hold around 66-70C. Did some stress test with Super Pi where I managed to get the CPU up to 66C and one would think that this wouldn't affect the GPU.... but it did - so I managed to get it up to 76C!

So here the photos that might give a hint why the system acts as it does.

The first image here shows that the two pieces of thermal compounds (squared) used for the ATI X1400. You might notice that the layer is really thick - around 2mm!

Next image is a closer view where the left piece of thermal compound was more like tack that you could easy remove with the fingers?!

and here is another closer look from another view; notice the thermal compound layer thinkness....

and finally a quick view from the other side..

I hope above images helps out other when contacting Lenovo to fix this heating problem.

Have you had any success in resolving this issue? I'd really like to know any more information as I just received this machine and can't stand the noise of the fans.

Thanks.

Not yet and Lenovo has been out and replaced the fan system with a new one and it actually got worse. The temperature is now usually around 70-72C so I will make a new call to them about it and have them to figure out something. I have also been contacted by customer care center that asked a few question, among other if I was happy with provided service.... the answer was of course that I was not happy and that they would have some one to contact me... so far after 2 weeks no one has called ... hrm..

In November 2005 I bought a new Lenovo ThinkCentre and from the first time
I switched it on the fan kept running at full speed and was very noisy. Since it was a new machine I called Lenovo for advise, and to my big surprise I got the
solution during the first phone call. It turned out that the fan was connected to a
wrong "connector" on the motherboard. Plugging it into the right one fixed it.
Not that this is the solution to your problem, which I hope is solved by now, but at
least it's related to Lenovo and fans.

I love my Thinkpads but they are all IBMs. I suspect that the Lenovo Thinkpads might not have the same quality as the old IBM Thinkpads. Just look at the price difference!

I saw a Lenovo notebook computer at Staples for a little over $500.

Well, true that Lenovo has done their fair share to get the price down a bit. But the T60 that I bought is really well built so overall I'm really happy with it. The new Z-series was the first that Lenovo launched after that they bought ThinkPad brand and as well the T60 series now also exist with the option of getting widescreen. So the quality of the "housing" of the T60 is really great, nothing to say their if I compare it with some new Dell system that I've played around with as well. Huge difference in favor for the ThinkPads (and they still look better).
