1. OS2KERNAL Unacceptable?
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
I installed a new hard drive. I have 64 meg ram memory on a board with a AMD K6 300 cpu. When I installed OS/2 Warp ver 4, I received an erro message after the installation disc was being read/loaded from. The message was 'OS2KERNAL Unacceptable'. Could this be a problem with the software on the disc (does the software on the disc need to be upgraded/updated and how would it be done?)? Could it be that the hard drive is too large for OS/2 (I have read that OS/2 does not see a drive larger than a certain size). Could it be the disc (damage?)? I really want to install OS/2 Warp on my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The exact message is 'The file OS2KRNL is not acceptable. Insert a system diskette and restart the system'. If anyone has any idea how to solve this (even if it might 'silly' or 'odd'), it will be appreciated.

If you running with the latest FixPaks available for Warp 4 You should have the latest needed IDE drivers to support large disk. What was the old size of the disk and what is the current?
What it also could be is that when You copied all the files from the old drive to the new one that You missed out some locked system files. So question here is if you used xcopy with the proper flags on. If You have an active Warp system, just write help Xcopy and you get all the available switches that can be used when using Xcopy. More or less use everyone Well, if You read the help text You will figure out whuch one to use. If you have a pair of installations diskettes You could try to use sysinstx against the new C: drive...

Let us know how it turns out!

I was not able to transfer the information from the old drive. The main bios suddenly did not see it. The old drive was 1 gigabyte. The new one is 20 gigabyte. My plan was to backup up the software/programs onto cd-rw or cd-r discs. When the older hard drive failed to be seen by the bios, this plan was abandoned. I have to start from scratch. I did copy the installation diskettes so I could upgrade the copies. In the process I found that there were damaged parts of the disk 1 and 3. The fdisk that comes with Warp ver 3 or 4 sees only a small part of the new hard drive.

Big suggestion would also to get the latest available bios for the board. You might get it to work with some luck. But, the risk is bigger that you won't, even if you get the latest IDE drivers for OS2 that support larger disks.

The boards chipset is Sis and I believe the url is http://www.sis.tw.com (IIRC). The bios is AmiBios but I do not know the url for them. It might worth at least looking into.

I used the disk manager that came with Seagate hard drive. Since I did not want to use FAT32, it said that it had to partition the hard drive into 10 parts with 2 gig each. I wanted to format it with hpfs but it had trouble fdisk the hard drive. I installed Warp ver 4 using the 'easy' method. It installed okay but only sees 2 gig of the 20 gig hard drive. It does not see the other logical drives (d to l). I will be installing the latest fixpak with hopes that it will see more of the hard drive.

I have been told that there is a installation disk creation program on the Warp cd-rom. I was told that the installation disk was corrupt. I had used updated installation diskettes (2nd and 3rd one with the first one the same) using software from IBM. I used them in the installation. If it works, I will try to re-install Warp ver 4 and try to use the 'advanced' feature to format the hard drive using hpfs (way better than FAT16).

I can not recall that I've heard the script to make installations diskettes for Warp 4 should or have ever been corrupt. I've installed both US and UK version of Warp 4. But, read the help files that comes along since You have to add an extra line in the config.sys on the installation diskettes. If it doesn't helps out with the update it is then a problem with the bios - get it updated!

I believe the cdinstall program creates installation diskettes (IIRC). I was able to get to a certain point where the installation process can fdisk the hard drive but not format it. I can fdisk the hard drive where all (well 99%) of the 20 gig can be seen (using the fdisk from the Warp ver 4) but it had problems with formatting it (something about incorrect parameters). I used mbr software that came with the hard drive to load unto it. I will try again tonight or tomorrow. I get so close and yet it does not install.

I have fdisk'ed the hard drive and formatted it using hpfs. I can still fdisk it but there are problems formatting it. Using the software on the cd-rom that came with the hard drive, I re-loaded the mbr (main boot record)software. I hope it works. I will keep trying (I really like using OS/2 Warp ver 4).

I used the diskette installation software from the WarpUp with fixpak 15 cd-rom. I was able to install OS/2 Warp ver 4. Instead of seeing one hard drive, it saw 5 hard drives with varying amounts of space (from 2 to 5 gigabytes of memory). It was a great feeling. I was able to install the WarpUp fixpak 15. It runs great and really fast.
