1. Thinkpad 760EL and eCS?
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
I tried installing eCS on my IBM Thinkpad 760 EL that has 1.2 gigabyte hard drive, 72 meg of ram, 120 mhz cpu. I have it connected to a dock1base/dock2 (I was able to use this combo to install Warp ver 4 - diskette drive in the Thinkpad with the cdrom drive in the dock [I had bought an external Thinkpad diskette driver from www.ebay.com but it does not connect/work with my model of Thinkpad ]). The installation does not get beyond the first diskette and the 'where would you want to boot from' question. I choose the cdrom instead of the hard drive and it stops after that with a 'failed to get parameter' (or something to that effect). Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm.. I guess that you're not able to get the system to boot directly from the CDs? Do you have any kind of network connection from this ThinkPad? If so you could always try ot set up a remote installation via the network.from another system.

I do have a network pcmcia card for it. I could try to connect to my desktop that has eCS 1.1 on it to see if it could be done. Thanks for the recomendation.

I will also try the updated installation diskette program that I downloaded from http://www.ecomstation.com that is available to registered users. I will return to show if it worked or not.

Thanks for the information.

I guess reading between the lines I guess that Serenity has removed the old ibm installer from ecs.

It would be nice to at least have an option like in linux dists to use the old installer if the new one doesn't work. The old installer even allowed you to copy the disk images onto the harddrive and install without a cdrom.

If you have only one diskette where do you put the cdrom driver?

As you have an old warp4 system I guess you could setup a basic installation on another system and then copy it onto to your thinkpad after formatting a partition. Run sysinstx.com, edit config.sys etc. Of course the drive letters would need to be same.

With the Thinkpad 760el, the diskette is in the Thinpad itself with the cdrom drive in the dock1/2 connected to the bottom of the Thinkpad. I have an external diskette drive for a Thinkpad but not for my model (perhaps I can use it with a future Thinkpad purchase). I also have an IBM external pcmcia cdrom drive. I will give that a try too.

Just to verify, you're not able mount the CD directly into the ThinkPad instead of the diskette drive? I mean if you have either eCS or the later OS2 updates from IBM (CP2) you should be able get the system to boot and install directly from the CD when mounted directly in the TP.

I will give it a try. I will put the cdrom drive in the Thinkpad and try booting from it. I think this model of Thinkpad was before they could boot from the cdrom drive. It could be that this model Thinkpad is not capable of handling the newer eCS os(?).

Your problem appears to the ecs installation program not the os.As ecs is based on warp4 with the latest fixpaks it should still run on the 760.

I remember that on ecs v1 Serenity supplied the ibm installer on the second cd, is this still the case with v1.1?

As you are trying to install ecs onto an old 760el, the ibm installer
may be a better choice.

I will look for it on the second cd. Thanks for the information.

I am trying to install eCS on an older model Thinkpad - a 760EL. It runs Warp ver 4 quite well.

I won a bid on a external diskette drive for my Thinkpad 760el. I will try again once it arrives. I will also look on the second cd for the installation program(s) for the diskettes.

I am worried that I have given you false hope concerning the installation. Everything I read about ecs v1.1 indicates that the ibm installer has been completely removed.

You can check this by looking at the directories on the cd. Do the directories os2image\disk_0, disk_1, disk_2....disk_20, etc exist?

For a remote install over a network the cid\srvifs\ directory is also needed, I guess this has been removed from distribution as wel?

If you cannot find these directories then I have two suggestions (1)
use the ecs installer or, (2) do the installation on another computer and then copy the files onto your thinkpad.

How much memory does the 760EL have? The ecs installer requires 48 to 64MB.

Sorry I have some experience installing os/2 both from cd and remotely but know nothing about ecs v1.1.

Good luck.

I will look for the directories that you mentioned. Thanks for the information.

The Thinkpad 760EL has about 72 meg of memory. I was able to upgrade it using memory I won a bid on at eBay.com.

I looked for the directories on the second cd but did not find them. I will look again in case I overlooked them.

I had won a bid on a external diskette drive for my model of Thinkpad. I tried the installation again but it failed when it could not acquire certain settings/information. I will wait till I acquire a newer notebook computer to try eCS on it. I am glad it is able to use OS/2 Warp ver 4.
