After a few years of being away I am finally getting back into the OS/2 Warp game and I have some questions.

What *general* hardware will OS/2 install on and run well? I know that specific chipsets and features will not be supported but how well does OS/2 work with the graphics cards and sounds cards of newer PCs?

As long as there is sound support and the ability to run a screen at a decent resolution at thousands of colors I will be happy.

What is the "state of OS/2"? For those who are still actively using it do you consider it "dead" or "dying" by any means? There is obviously not the support that there once was but I wanted to know what the state of things was.

Thanks!

As for video under OS/2 you need to check the video chips supported from SNAP, see here:

http://www.scitechsoft.com

As for sound under OS/2 there are some efforts to get a similar solution like Scitech's SNAP.
This solution is called "UNIaud(io)" !
It's still under development and does support some popular sound chips !!

Sorry, but I have no specific link to provide here ;-(

Good luck and have fun with OS/2 and / or eCS !!!

BTW: Do not forget do download the newest Installation Diskettes from IBM's OS/2 websites
to avoid installation strugglings and trobules.

Every "general" hardware is supported. It's the obscure stuff you run into troubles with.

I know that specific chipsets and features will not be supported but how well does OS/2 work with the graphics cards and sounds cards of newer PCs?

Almost every graphics chipset on this planet is supported by Scitech display doctor, so no problems there.
Sound may or may not be a problem. 'It depends on your chipset... More info is needed.

What is the "state of OS/2"? For those who are still actively using it do you consider it "dead" or "dying" by any means?

If it was dead nobody would use it. It works for me YMMV.

Regards Chris

More 'reborn' with/in eComStation but neither 'dead' nor 'dying'.

Based on that the press has killed OS/2 over and over again and how many new OS/2 sites that is available it far from dead. For example, this site, launched March 2000. Four years after the first time that the press claimed that OS/2 was dead. There is a lot of cool OS/2 projects going on and there will be much more to be launched.

OS/2 will run pretty well on todays hardware! Of course not all is supported but most is, e.g. crappy hardware like winmodems won't run. For hardware in general have a look at http://www.os2warp.be and for sound http://www.os2usr.org/os2sound.html
For any other question regarding OS/2 install you can contact me off the list.
