Unable to establish DHCP connection from Thinkpad to router
«

Specifics:
Thinkpad 390
WSEB
IBM PCMCIA etherjet card
During boot, I get a message saying that DHCP cannot get parameters, but will continue trying in the background. The network requester autostarts, but eventually times out.
lantran.log has lines explaining that the etherjet driver is loaded and operational, the card is inserted and initialised, and has detected the cable type. It then mentions a sys0318 error.
MPTS has my NIC listed with--
0 - OS2 NETBIOS
0 - OS2 TCP/IP
that seems ok to me.
I went to the TCPIP local config notebook and verified I have the LAN0 interface enabled and using DHCP. I manually configured the loopback interface to 127.0.0.1 and can ping it.
If I manually try to start the requester, it times out saying that the requester could not start and was eventually killed by some function. The error in question is NET3060.
DHCP monitor status says its discovering, but never changes or updates.
I do get a link light on the NIC, and a yellow instead of green status light on the router itself.
What else should I check for? I know I almost have it working finally.
I just wish I could use my IBM highrate wireless LAN card instead. 8-(

what happens if you enter an ip adress and a gateway in the tcp/ip config? does it see the router then?
are you 100% certain the pc can connect to the DHCP server of the router? usually you see some logs on the router which also could be of interest.

Maybe you take a look what
ifconfig lan0
say. Or set the IP by yourself f.i.
ifconfig lan0 192.168.1.10
or which ever subnet your DHCP server runs. And then try a ping to the DHCP server.

[E:\]>help sys0318
SYS0318: Message file *** cannot be found for message ***.
EXPLANATION: The message file should be in the current directory.
ACTION: Install the message file or specify the location of the
message file using the DPATH command (for OS/2 sessions) or APPEND
(for DOS sessions). Then, retry the command.
It appears your system is trying to tell you something but can't find the necessary words to do so. Post the full lantran.log so we can have a look at it.
The obvious question is - is your router actually acting as a DHCP server? If it isn't then you would get the response you are seeing.
Do you have another machine you can use to test to see if it can connect to the router? It doesn't matter if it is a linux or windows machine - just that it can or can not connect.
Linux has a good set of network tools to see what is going on - for windows you can get HoverIP which is simple but comprehensive in what it does.
If your router is not acting as the DHCP server, the manual will tell you what the default IP address is - usually something like 192.168.1.1 - which you can put in tcp/ip config in place of DHCP.
If nothing can connect to your router then suspect a bad router.
