No, you don't need Samba Server.
For a reasonable LAN setup you NEED Samba Server and/or Client these days.

The simple solution is to create a user account on both machines that doesn't use a password.

Then SMB will work just fine.
For simple file transfers that is correct.
I've never understood the quick answer of "Samba!" when it's not needed.
It is need as long as you want to do networking on a level that covers more than just simple file transfers...
