What is the recommended program for maintaining the correct time from an NTP Time Server?

I want to run something at system startup.

I use the ntp 4.20 port build 6 lib06 package. You can get it from Hobbes. Just do a search for ntp on Hobbes and you will find it. It contains ports of both ntp and ntpdate. I have been using ntpdate for a couple of weeks and I have not had any issues with it yet.

There is also DAYTIME-1.12 server and client, also on hobbes.

Notes from the readme:

The server implements the RFC 867 (daytime), RFC 868 (time) and RFC
1361 (SNTP) services, both for TCP and UDP protocols. The client can
use any of these services and either protocol to retrieve the time
from another host and adjust its local time. Using SNTP over TCP is an
extension over RFC 1361 (although mentioned there).
