320GB disk seen as 130GB by OS/2
« on: April 24, 2016, 11:27:21 am »
I have a 320GB disk which previously had Windows installed.

Initially I thought I would try to use the disk as a dual boot system by shrinking the NTFS volume, but was unable to find any way of installing OS/2 so eventually I completely removed the NTFS partition. When trying to install OS/2 it showed the disk as being 130GB so I thought Windows had done something with the disk, and it had...There was a 1GB partition in the middle of the disk. Eventually I deleted that using GParted on Linux and Linux showed the disk size as 320GB.

On trying to install OS/2 it again showed the disk as 130GB... so I thought that that something had been left on the disk, so I cleared it down both through Linux and FreeBSD. Both showed it to be a 320GB disk...

Back to OS/2, same as before. I tried DFSee and even that showed 130GB.

Anyone know where I should look to see what's goung on.

I suppose when it boots I can get some output from IBM1S506.ADD by adding '/V' in config.sys, but it will wizz past before I can read it, and I'm not sure I would be able to undertand the values shown.

Maybe it's a limit in IBM1S506 and I should replace it with DANIS506....

Maybe try DANIS506 first and report back the results for everyone :)

To get the information from IBM1S506.ADD use COPY IBMS506$ con:  for output to screen or  COPY IBMS506$ anyfile  to produce a text file for reading later (may also be better if you have several controllers).

I forget the limitations on the IBM driver which we gave up using after Daniela created her driver, but I think one of them was that it couldn't see all of the larger drives that were becoming available..

Thanks for the tip....

I just discovered the '/W' switch....

http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0798H/vnewsft.htm

so didn't need to dig out my tablet to take a pic....

Pitty I can't make any sense of the figures.... I'll try saving the output as a file like you suggest and post the result.

DANIS506 allowed access to the whole disk....

But partitioning and formatting it is now problematic.

Sounds like a handy tip.... I presume you meant 'COPY IBM1S506$ con:'   I tried both but got nothing output. When should I you run this and from where?

Run in an os/2 command window and you should see something like the attachment (screen grab on the test computer).

Now you can see the whole disk use DFSee to partition, don't forget the LVM information or you could use the Logical Volume Manager in OS/2 System.

It might also be needed to update os2dasd.dmd and the lvm componets in ACP2 for large discs.

Yes, I see now. It works with DANIS506  but not  with IBM1S506 .

I'm using components of ACP2. os2dasd.dmd is at buildlevel  14.84. Where would I find anything newer?

If they are needed, I am not 100% certain.  You can get these files from fixpak 5 or if somebody has it the OS2LVM update package 105 from IBM.
They where available as download via software choice from IBM.
