“Want to run Linux any time, any place? Here's what to do with popular distributions like Puppy Linux, Ubuntu, and Fedora, so you can boot up directly from your thumb drive.”

Could one boot eCS from an USB drive in a similar manner as Linux in the above?  Huh

It'd be interesting to see. As a matter of fact, I'm going to try right now on my 8gb CFII card Cheesy

Edit:
Scratch that, I'm packing up my dorm to move home and I cant find my CF card anywhere :C Once I get settled at home I will give it another go.

There are actually some step by step instructions to try with some usb sticks on the DFSee website:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/howto.htm#usbootlf

apparently it doesn't always work... I have not tried it myself but will someday.

Think the biggest issue would be the bios (once you put the correct config sys on the usb drive).  Some bios's will map USB storage devices back to an ide device, assuming the bios reports a functional drive geometry it should then work.

Wow, thanks for the link, thats quite the resource you have there Tongue

I'll have to refer to that when I find my CF card to see what I need to do to get started.

I boot from CF card on a board with CF adapter which is maped as usual IDE channel on this board. Only difference to a real harddisk on the IDE channel is, I have to disable Busmaster (/!BM). So with a CF to IDE adapter, I see little problem when booting from CF.

Thanks Andi. What problems would a CF->USB adapter give, because that's what I have on hand right now.

Since it is an USB adapter, would it not treat it like an USB drive?  Huh

Andi,

From what I understand, a higher end (ie: pretty darn expensive) CF to IDE adapter will allow you to utilize all of the IDE features a hard drive will (including busmaster). I havent tried that - but I have tried cheaper CF->IDE and had to disable busmaster as well - though I have read about others who bought "decent" adapters and have not had to.

I'm looking at a new CF->IDE adapter - but it costs $150+ (but claims it will allow all the IDE features associated with a HDD to be used with a CF card). When I manage to spring for one (and test it), I will let you know. Otherwise, in the meantime, I have found that the CF performance is terrible with those features disabled. At least for OS/2.

I use the CF on a 233MHz Geode Embedded Single Board computer. It's a 1GB sandisk card. Performace is not that bad. I want to use this board as an internet router and ftp server. It feels faster than my old thinkpad with about 1GB harddisk. Of course the difference to current hardware rather big...
