WSEB-need help to restore/re-create objects in desktop folders
«

Making a long story short, I screwed up WSEB moving it from Drive C: to Drive D:! I now have it working pretty well, it boots fine and starts the server etc. Problem is I have no objects in any of the desktop folders, all the correct folders and sub-folders are created correctly (I used Makeini to accomplish this) but the folders themselves have none of the objects in them, they are all blank. Is there any way of re-creating these objects without re-installing? Could it possibly be accomplished by booting to the recovery menu and doing a F2 (boot to command line)?
thanks for any ideas

Hi klipp,
A couple of questions,
Do you still have any of your old WSeB on drive c:?
If so is the desktop dir intact?
If the answer is yes to both of those questions then you can check the desktop is OK by putting - set desktop=c:\desktop in the config.sys on drive d: and rebooting. This should bring up your old desktop. If it does then you should be able to recover it by copying - from a command prompt without the wps.

Hey ivan, Unfortunatly the answer to both of you're questions is no. The only way I was able to re-create the desktop was by using Makeini for both OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI and then adding set desktop=d:\desktop to the config.sys.

Hi klipp,
If you have lost the original desktop from c: then the only way to get anything back is to either use your backup - you do have one?, or reinstall.
All makeini did is to use the default blank ini.rc and sysini.rc to put the very basic maintenance desktop up - the one you get at the first reboot before anything is populated.
There may be a way of getting a working desktop but that involves finding what you have left in your d:/os2 and d:\os2\install dirs.
The d:\os2\install dir should be the most helpful. Mine has the install.rc and early versions of os2.ini and os2sys.ini which might give you a little more of a working desktop. In all I have 18 different *.rc files in the \os2 dir structure which can be used in combination to, maybe, get a working desktop.
I use a piece of EWS - ROBOSAVE - to backup my desktop as I mentioned in another topic but, unfortunately that won't help you at this late stage.
Sorry I can't offer much hope - sometimes it has to be a reinstall.

Thanks ivan, Your info gives me something to work with. I do have a backup but its on tape and backs up to drive C. which I cannot afford to do anymore on this particular machine! (well now that I think about it--possibly!!) And also unfortunatly I no longer have WSeB CD (it got left in the states when I moved to Mexico many years ago.) so a re-install is not an option also.
The INI.RC file in D:\OS2 looks like it might have what I need, I'll just have to figure out how to make it work!
Thanks again for your help

I believe either xWorkPlace or Styler/2 has an option that will allow you to rebuild most of the desktop objects (as well as it's own). Pretty sure it's xWorkPlace.
Another option is to boot to the Maintenance Desktop, do a shutdown, then reboot to the OS normally. If the Maintenance Desktop boot works properly, you should see a default OS/2 desktop on reboot.
