Java has really changed my use of eCS.
Now I can run Genealogy, what I couldn't with the former versions. Now I can use Jalbum to make web presentations from my travels. Jalbum use FTP to upload the generated albums, but the target server does not except FTP. I found MindTerm, a SCP program written in Java - very good so far.
There still are bugs in the Java version, but they seem to  being solved very quickly. I am satisfied.
Now I'm starting to hunt for other good programs, for example. accounting program for home use, a program for producing nice web pages, and so on.
But, there is a but. The project is still missing nearly 4000 €. I recommend that as many as possible donate a sum to the project. Java brings eCS a big jump forward.

Please support the project.

I agreed with you on helping the project to get the funds. Java will open the doors to run many programs under this platform.

Why don't you post some screenshots of the Java applications you are running with Java 6?

Here goes one.

Hi eilygre,

Which version of jAlbum is that?  The last one I got to work is 7.2.

I use jAlbum 9.1.3.
But there are some bugs in Java or Odin that gives a few problems.
Sometimes jAlbum don't start. It just consumes 100 % CPU for a minute or so and then dies. I had often to reboot up to 10 times before it started.
One can not drag and drop pictures into the work area, that kills the program. You have to use the File Open Dialog to select the pictures you want to create an album for.

...try http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum9.1.3.zip. The installer does not work (see tickets in http://svn.netlabs.org/java/report).
Any further bugs of java please create a ticket there.

Hi All

I've not played much with the java6 port myself - about the only app I had tried was Sudoku which worked fine but used lots of cpu when starting - but recently downloaded and installed JPhotoBrush http://www.jphotobrushpro.com to show my son, who uses PhotoShop, that there are alternatives to the M$ world.

I have the "SMP friendly" version of java6 installed ie it should only work on 1 cpu.

However, when running JPhotoBrush I see both cpus are in use - and trying to open files simply does not work, the cpus peak and after a short period of time when it is obvious that the app has got problems it is necessary to kill the app.

So, java6 is not yet ready for use it seems. Guess I ought to open a bug report about this but just wondered if anyone else could confirm the above problems.

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete

I tried JPhotoBrush on a virtual machine with one proc and I didn't get any strange CPU use. It started to use more CPU when opening the file and later the CPU use just get back to normal.

Possible the general Java bug with SMP remains, can you test it without SMP?

Hi Martin

Sorry, I guess I was not very clear: My system has a dualcore processor; the java6 package I installed was the "SMP friendly" version which has already had markexe.exe run on the executables so that java6 only uses 1 cpu.

However, JPhotoBrush was obviously using *both* cpus which, I suspect, caused it to hang when trying to open a file. This is repeatable here, in my 5 attempts to open a file both cpus peak and JPhotoBrush hangs.

Regards

Pete

JPhotoBrush is for me another proof of the importance of Java for eCS/OS2. Now I can edit old scanned pictures in a way I couldn't before. I bought PMView Pro a few weeks ago, but it has not the necessary functions.
There is a site (OS/2 Java Corner) on  http://www.os2world.com/java/ that contains a lot of info about programs and applications that can be run using Java, but it has not been updated since 2007. I think it is time to start updating it again. Have a look.

I got this one working. Didn't work with earlier javas, but with openjdk6! It's Costat (and Coplot). It is a statistical software (commercial) from CoHort Software, www.cohort.com .
