Simple C Programming Editor and File Manager for eCS ?
« on: September 09, 2014, 11:57:49 pm »
Hello,

already trying so many editors and file managers I have downloaded from the NMSU Hobbes FTP server, I have to ask these silly questions *):

1) Programming Editor

Do you know of a GUI-based C programming editor as simple as the e.exe editor already being shipped with eCS, plus the following features:

- display of line numbers,
- ability to open multiple files in different tabs,
- undo and redo feature up to ten levels (or more),
- search for and jump to a given line number,
- and no need to manually re-configure it on the CONFIG.SYS level with TERM, XFree86, X11, etc. config settings ?

The Enhanced Editor that is available with eCS unfortunately does not work with my Apple UK keyboard.

2) File Manager

I still have trouble getting acquainted again to the OS/2 Warp file manager. Is there something like the MuCommander (GUI-based Norton Commander clone) also available for eCS, with no further obligatory manual configuration on the CONFIG.SYS level ?

Thank you,

Alex

*) Maybe a forthcoming eCS 2.2 Beta III could be delivered with such tools out-of-the-box. It could spare hours for those who would rather like to concentrate on porting C code to eCS than spending time on setting up an easy-to-use development tools environment.

There's FTE and EFTE,  comes in text and PM versions. Older versions on Hobbes or see http://trac.netlabs.org/efte/wiki.
I like FC/2 as a NC clone. Decent filemanager and even decent for quickly editing source. Shareware though with an occasional nag for payment and IIRC 30 day evaluation. http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/shell/fc2_240.zip

Filestar is a well thought of File Manager:  http://jaread.net/software/
FM/2 is also well thought of:  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-browse.php?dir=/pub/os2/util/browser
That link has many file managers, some mention being Norton Commander clones (those are all older but should work as well now as they ever did but I don't anything about them).
Larsen commander is the one I like but use the above two as well: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/shell/lcmd1.07.02.zip

For editors:
Flex edit at the same site as Filestar, I haven't much experience with it.
QT based editors probably the best chance of having tabs (there are some I know have tabs but don't have line numbers)
http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/wiki/QT4%20Office
http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/wiki/QT4%20Development
I used to always use ae.exe (likely what you are using as e.exe) as it had line numbers (have to turn off wrap) but it didn't have a goto line number.  I only stopped due to it rebooting my system, have several systems it is doing that on but haven't figured out why.
I now use NEPMD but it uses the Enhanced Editor as a base so probably still wouldn't work for you but in case it would change something so that it works:
http://trac.netlabs.org/nepmd
It doesn't have tabs but does have line numbers and can jump to line numbers.
efte that Dave mentioned I have used and it works well but haven't ever looked for jumping to a specific line number.

Hi

You may want to try the MED editor which seems to have some - if not all -  of the features you want http://www.utopia-planitia.de/index.html

Editor - I use MED for all but programming. Another link beside that one above  http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Tools#Editors

Filecommander - LarsenCommander http://sourceforge.net/projects/lcmd/http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/
or FM/2 http://trac.netlabs.org/fm2/wiki/WikiStart
