Playing DVD
« on: December 04, 2014, 02:39:46 am »
I've tried VLC and SMPlayer, but most DVDs will not play. Is it some kind of encoding problem?

It almost looks like it is scanning from track to track, but no output.

An old DVD from when DVD were a new thing plays just fine on either program.

How long did you wait for the encryption to get broken? Here it takes a surprising long time. You might also look at any output, Tools-->Messages for VLC, I forget with smplayer but should be an option to capture the output of MPlayer (libdvdcss to be exact).

Each time I try to play, I get the following message four times.

According to Google, you're not alone. Unluckily doesn't seem to be a simple solution.
Is a subdirectory created under %HOME%\.dvdcss with the name of the DVD you're trying to play?
Perhaps try to launch vlc like
vlc -vvv -logfile=vlc.log -logmode=text
and see if anything interesting is logged when trying to play a dvd.

Try my MPlayer package and libdvdcss-1.3.0.zip

I think only one didn't work.

Do you have 50 MBs available for /tmp?
It's possible that your DVD player is crap. I had one that just wouldn't play most DVD's though in my case I had a bad sector error or such. Strangely I could rip the iso with dvdao+libcss and then play the iso.
Can you navigate to the DVD and get a directory listing and/or copy it to the drive?

The DVD is a cheap, new SATA unit. RSJ doesn't work with it (or pretty much any other SATA drive), but CDRTools2 and DVDDAO work just fine. I can navigate to all the files on the DVD. Oddly, if I try to copy a file from the DVD, it doesn't work.

Code: [Select]
[d:\temp]copy s:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_7.VOB
S:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_7.VOB => D:\temp\VTS_01_7.VOB
SYS0030: The system cannot read from the specified device. "D:\temp\VTS_01_7.VOB

Yes, the encryption will stop it from copying IIRC. Can you rip it and then feed the ISO to VLC? It's possible you need dvdcss.dll, probably the correct versions as well. The one I have for working with DVDDAO was sent to me by nickk back in 2007. If you need it i can send it to you.

This is what happens when I try to rip the DVD with DVDDAO. The resulting file is 200 MB rather than 8 GB.

If that is an encrypted DVD the only way to rip that is to use a program that will remove the encryption, until you remove that you are not going to get anything that you can play.

There are programs - usually windows based, they also cost money (I have one set that I use to remove region restrictions) - that will allow you to do what you want but, as far as I know, they are illegal to use in the US with your draconian DMCA laws.

Hi Neil, you're failing due to the encryption. As I said, I have a dvdcss.dll that'll work with dvddao which I can send you. I have a coupe of email addresses for you including a gmail and a blondeguy. Which should I send it to?

ian at os2site dot com ';-)

I currently have :-

 6/08/14  11:23      36878         124  dvdcss.dll
 7/04/03  17:08      52653          49  dvdcss.dll_old
28/02/13   9:23     196967         124  dvdcss.dll_old_

so I'd be interested in trying the 2007 one as well.

Hi Ivan,

Quote
Ian, I have a few others I could send if you want them.

Here I am wondering why I don't have all these files, then I find libdvdcss*.zip files, I've been searching for dvdcss* when I should
have been searching for *dvdcss* under os2site.com...

So I have :-

 2/10/08  22:47     595064           0  libdvdcss-1.2.10.zip
28/02/13   9:24     611542          86  libdvdcss-1.2.13.zip
 7/04/03  17:08     225764           0  libdvdcss-1.2.6.zip
31/08/08  15:01     590872           0  libdvdcss-1.2.9.zip
 6/08/14  11:23     604960          85  libdvdcss-1.3.0.zip

and

21/01/03  18:32     135611           0  dvdcss.1.2.4.zip
 6/07/02  22:02      30690           0  dvdcss.zip
18/06/02  23:33      79170           0  dvdcss2.zip

some were in /sw/mmedia/dvd and others were in /sw/dev/lib

Feel free to send any you have and I'll figure out what I don't have, and update what I do have so that I have what I don't have.

Thanks
