Samsung ML-2165W Printer
« on: July 12, 2015, 03:27:50 pm »
Hi there,
has anyone ever tried to use the Samsung ML2165W Printer with ECS/OS2?
I am not familiar with Cups so I was wandering if someone has tried before and might give me some information.

Regards
Holger

Hi Holger, I havn't tried the ML2165w, but have experience with several other Samsung printers. Unfortunatly while the printers are generally excellent printers, they (like many H.P. printers nowdays) require a Proprietory  driver which is not made available for OS/2. You might try contacting Paul, he might possibly have more information about this situation.

Hi Holger, I've had a couple of Samsung printers, the last being a ML-1610. They worked fine with cups though there was an extra driver that I had to add IIRC. Best to look at the supported printer list

Hi Holger

Looking at the ml2160 ppd file included with the linux driver package -  http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=UNI_UK&CttFileID=5768603&CDCttType=DR&ModelType=N&ModelName=ML-2165W&VPath=DR/201407/20140710101817219/ULD_V1.00.27.04.tar.gz - I see this line:-

*cupsFilter:  "application/vnd.cups-raster 0 rastertospl"

That seems to suggest that you would need something else, probably the Splix package, to get the printer working with ecups. I do not see the ml-2165 listed in the current build of Splix - ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/ecups/install/splix-2_0_0.wpi - so agree with klipps suggestion to contact Paul to see if support will happen in the near future.

Regards

Pete

This seems to be an entry-level raster printer using a proprietary interface language (SPL). There is a chance it might work with SpLIX (although it's not listed as supported), but I'd say it's probable that it wouldn't work under OS/2 at all.

Dear all,
thank you for your replies.
I have tried to make this printer work with ecups the last days, but did not get beyond the point of a blinking light, which seems do indicate some kind of interaction between my system and the printer. I realized that it was not listed as supported in the Splix files, but was hoping it might be used with a driver included for a model listed as supported?
I will try to contact Paul as suggested, hoping that he might find time to answer.

Thank you once again for your answers.
Holger

Hi Guys,

I did a quick google, and I don't see any open source drivers for this printer - hence I can't support it on OS/2.

Cheers,

Paul
