Soundblaster live & Sander's driver

Hey full duplex almost forgot about that ! added one to my dual core with 2GB memory, the on-board sound didn't fully work.

I found an old, but great guide on setting up the SB live card in the Yahoo group.

Couple of questions:

1) best mixer available (lbmix008.zip).
2) Generic Win-OS/2 Audio Driver latest & any tips - where to get the drivers.
3) best PCI soundcard with native drivers ??? soundfusion, crystal chipsets some have Winos2 drivers ???

So far no problems with eCS 2.2 :)

Long time since I last installed an SBLive but guess that lbmix is still probably the best mixer to use with Sanders driver.

I think the Generic Win-OS/2 Audio Driver was something to do with Roderick (ex-Mensys) if memory serves me correctly. Is there a best PCI soundcard for OS/2 based systems? -  At one point Crystal were highly recommended but then opinion changed - something to do with buffers being too small and causing playback problems; also later Crystal soundcards do not have OS/2 drivers. For my basic sound requirements - system sounds, the occasional video but *never* mp3s - I usually find the "onboard sound"  works fine.

You can still find the generic WIN/OS2 driver on eCS CD 2. As for the SB Live. It might not work on all systems.
It does support high IRQ's. But it might run into trouble if your system has more then 2 GB of RAM.

Martin it was one of the posts in the SBlive yahoo group,  but don't remember which one.

I could send you the cut and post, the author is list so it would be nice if you could bet permission for general read post of it. I plan on doing the same after I get everything working.

I have recently inherited some SoundBlaster Live cards, so I decided to try them. The results are somewhat surprising. Testing done on an old DELL machine.

Model SB0200 SB Live! Series (WDM).
  Doesn't work in WinXP, so may be broken.
  UniAud won't load
  Sander's driver won't load.

Model SB0220
  WinXP can't find a driver.
  UniAud works.
  Sanders driver loads, but no sound.

Model CT4780 SB Live! Value (WDM) from a DELL machine.
  Works with WinXP.
  UniAud loads, but no sound.
  Works with Sauder's driver.

Model CT4830 SB Live! Value (WDM) from an IBM machine.
  Works in WinXP.
  Works with UniAud.
  Sander's driver won't load.

FTR, none of them work with Win7 (and up, I would assume). No drivers.

I chose the CT4830, with UniAud, to use with my Asus A88XM-A motherboard. It seems to be good, but it would be nice if the on board sound would work. It appears that there are two sound chips, one for HDMI, and one with a Realtek sound chip. UniAud appears to ignore both of them.

I am using an ASUS motherboard that uses the ADI AD1988B onboard sound chip and it works with UNIAUD.  There are also drivers on Hobbes for some of the ADI chips.

Also just a foodnote...

Unless other people can confirm I am wrong. In rare cases the Analog Devices AC 97 can choke on audio buffers and the system can crash.

The latest UNIAUD does not seem to have these issue's.  At least not that I can tell.

I don't think that ADI has anything to do with it.

I think the second one will work, if I can, somehow, disable the first one.

FWIW, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad L530, that seems to have the same type of problem, although I can get sound out of it with UNIMIX. It sounds like it has a two minute reverb set.

Are these two not two parts of the same unit? One (AMD) being a HDAudio UART and the other a HDAudio A/DAC?

It is very common with modern chipsets and even some older NVIDIA ones, the basic HDAudio or 97 interface hardware being on the southbridge and a cheap A/DAC chip handling the actual hardware interface, sometimes on a PCI/PCIe lane, sometimes on a USB bus, in those cases the driver should be generic and talk to the UART.

Old post, I known but I thought I would place it here for future reference, I managed to get both OS/2 and Windows using the same SB Live card by using the Kx drivers on the Windows side rather than the hacked version of the official drivers. Moreover my old eMU card appears to work on these drivers as well although I cannot get it to work on OS/2 at all.

Similarly, since the old Dell x600 "Workstation" cards are still just about the best VGA cards that still work on SNAP but are wonky on Windows, it turns out that the driver works just fine on windows, it is the DirectX setup that was the problem and after patching the DX drivers the x600 now works fine on both Windows 10 32 and 64 bit (occasionally minor hiccups during the boot process on W10 32 and boards with the old ATI 600 chipsets) and annoyingly enough is faster than the Radeon HD6450 that it replaced displaying 2D on Windows, considerably even.
