Hi All

Yes, Andi, those are the settings in use for news.gmane and, like Dave, all I ever see is a response that tells me connection timed out.

Why would news.gmane work for some people but give a "connection timed out" to others?

Regards

Pete
Sorry you're right. gmane newsgroups don't work here anymore too. Just tested and it timed out. Previously I though it works cause usually all my newsgroups are read at startup and I did not get any error message.

I read netlabs groups via Seamonkey newsreader since ages. Guess every news reader will handle it. NNTP, server name - news.gmane.org, port 119

.....At the moment, it is not possible to register at netlabs, I contacted Adrian already. Can someone tell me a current developer of 4os2? Then I try to get contact with E-Mail. Or another person could send a ticket after I have sent him my informations.
Adrian regularly reads the newsgroup - gmane.org.netlabs.community

I would say there is no current developer for 4os2. As you can see here - http://perforce.openwatcom.org:4000/@md=d&cd=//depot/public/4os2/&c=MoC@//depot/public/4os2/?ac=43&mx=50 - over the last years Steven fixed some tickets and packed the latest packages together. The last major improvements were made by me about 10 years ago. Including making the netlabs project pages and writing down all infos about here - http://4os2.netlabs.org/en/site/index.xml And no, sorry, there is no list of special 4os2 commands in the sources which would help you. At least I didn't find such when I looked at it a few days ago triggered by your discussions here and at os2.org.

If you found a bug in 4os2 and urgently want to create a ticket for it you can post it here. If it is that urgent that you can't wait on Adrians response for your own netlabs user data I can copy it over. But as said above, when you want to look at the sources you have to use p4 to check out from http://perforce.openwatcom.org:4000 or use the web interface there.

A few days ago I started again the discussion about transferring 4os2 sources to a more modern version control system and place it at f.i. bitbucket.org. Or at svn.netlabs.org. But given the (no) response it seems no one cares about.

Programming / Re: Git : SVN plugin

Triggered by this discussion I tested (again) SmartSVN7 with a real big software project. It started to convert the local repository but didn't finish. It took a while until I discovered that my data partition with all my programming projects run out of free space and that's the reason SmartSVN couldn't complete the conversion.

After freeing some space I now know (again) the real reason why I stood with SmartSVN6 since years - my license is only valid up to version 6 :-( Now I've a only partially converted big, and I mean real big, project which I can not handle fully with SmartSVN7 (the PRO features are disabled) and I can't handle it anymore with SmartSVN6 cause it complains about directories which are under control of a newer SVN version :-(

Time to check my backups.

Sorry for being off topic - just a reminder, sometimes there are good reasons to stay with good old proven software instead playing with new one.

I've no experience with SmartSVN, because I don't like the overhead of a JAVA app (shared mem). svn.exe suffices for me.
As always with GUI programs compared to command line utilities you do not have to remember all the command line switches. Moreover the built in compare and merge utility makes it worth to use such GUI tool. As we don't have something similar to Tortoise SVN/GIT the best options for people who prefer a GUI for such tasks are SmartSVN and SmartGit on our platform TTBOMK. And I've to say these two work quite stable here with since years.

Thanks for your explanations about svn versions. I always thought if a repository is upgraded once you can't go easily back. That's the reason why I stay with SmartSVN6.6. Maybe I should start using SmartSVN7.0.7 now.

IIRC correctly if you check in with 1.7 you can't check out with 1.6 anymore. Think you can't use our SmartSVN afterwards too. Maybe I'm totally wrong here and someone else knows the details.

Have you looked at URE - Universal Ressource Editor? Should be on hobbes. But aren't the option already listed on edm2?

Now I've updated to
Code: [Select]
Build-Identifikator: 20200424181102At that time I also updated all dependencies listed in RPM_REQUIREMENTS. So far so good. But now my AOO 4.1.7 does not work any more. It shows the splash screen but then ends.

In popuplog.os2 there I find -
Code: [Select]
04-30-2020  16:31:55  SYS2070  PID 04b3  TID 0001  Slot 00ea
P:\OPENOFFICE4.1.7\PROGRAM\SOFFICE.BIN
I18NPOOL->ICUUC.__ZN3icu22RuleBasedBreakIterator5resetEv
127

I know this is not strictly related to SM. But I wonder how others managed to run latest SM and AOO in parallel.

Internet / Re: The new browser / QT5

Hi All

Looking at Pauls post I guess we should be thinking about porting qt6 rather than finishing qt5...

Any volunteers to tell Silvan?  :-)

Regards

Pete
Not a good idea. Stopping running projects in favor of starting new ones usually ends up in finishing nothing. But I'm pretty sure Silvan knows the bigger picture and knows what to do. I for myself see no need to discuss this with Silvan. Think it's better when he does his usual work than discussing such things.

Networking / Re: Virtualbox, NAT and using ICAT

Thinking more about, I'm not really sure anymore if this works with wifi. Would have to test. At least it should work if you setup your 'standard networking' in a different subnet than the ICAT network while the access point covers both subnets.

Sorry I don't know much about VBOX networking. But in your setup question comes to mind why don't you use 2 network adapters for your guest? One specifically for ICAT with fixed IP f.i. 192.168.178.129 and another one with DHCP if you like.

I guess your router is a xDSL router and both machines are connected to the switch which is integrated in the router, correct?

In setup.cmd I would suggest something like
...
ifconfig lan1 192.168.178.129 ....
..
..
ipgate off
call mode 100,75 & dhclient lan0

Don't use the DHCP client which comes with OS/2 but the .rpm one.

Is there a specific reason why you don't want to separate these to networks?

I know the network part of our VBOX running on OS/2 is crippled. But guess VBOX running on Win will work much better.

Why don't you use something like 'rar a -r -ac -v2000m ....' for bigger drives? Or rsync (LuckyBackup)?

My boot drives are all well below 2GB so I use zip for them as zip is faster then rar. But for my data partition I use rar as above and additionally incremental backups with 'rar a -r -ao -ac -v2000m -ag+YYYYMMDD-NN AutoBak .....

Full script for incremental backup -
Code: [Select]
@REM script zum Sichern aller neuen Daten auf M: nach O:\...
@REM -ac clear achive bit
@REM -ag Generate archive name using the current date
@REM -ao Add files with Archive attribute set

call wait_cli 30

@mode 80,100

@o:
@cd \Banzai\TäglichesBackup
@rar a -r -ao -ac -m1 -v2000m -ag+YYYYMMDD-NN -x\delete\* -x\Trash _M_AutoBak m:\* 2>Error_M.log 1 tee AutoBackup_M.log

Just did a
Code: [Select]
zip -rS9 20200417_BanzM_eCS2.1DE.zip m:\* -x delete\* 2>error.logfrom O:\... and backed up my running M: partition. As usual it works. error.log is empty. I've my swapper.dat on another partition. Have to try with symlinks (-y) sometimes.

Maybe you should remove q (-ryS) or add 2>error.log to see what's the problem.

Backing up running system - if you restore then the restored system will have not the latest os2.ini and os2sys.ini changes but the state when the systems was booted. Usually not a big deal. But that's the main reason why it's better to back up when running from a maintenance partition/ArcaOS stick/bootable CD/DVD.

Hardware / Re: Someone tried OS/2 with 3840x2160 Display?
« on: April 17, 2020, 01:35:31 pm »
All my ArcaOS subscriptions has expired since a while so I'm not on current level. I have Panorama 1.06 or 07 or something like that which worked well for systems which are not supported by SNAP until now. I've bought more than one ArcaOS license in case someone wonders.

I'm testing on my Asus H87-Pro which offers 3 digital monitor interfaces. These 3 digital interfaces where one of the main reasons I bought this board a few years ago. At that time I planned to use 2 or 3 1920x1200 monitors digitally connected to this board. Unfortunately SNAP still does not support the Haswell integrated Intel HD4600 graphic. So I've to use Panorama with this system.

Now other possibilities than MultiMonitor setups are came to mind. With a big monitor and 3840x2160 resolution (max. on this board with 60Hz) I could replace 2 of the 24" 1920x1200 monitors. Of course this only works with DisplayPort.

As the 27" Eizo runs fine with 2560x1440 resolution I was confident 3840x2160 would work to. But then I tested my sons Samsung with 3840x2160 and that did not work. I don't know if it's a problem with Panorama or maybe this is another Samsung model with crippled/wrong EDID information like one of Dariusz Samsung. Should have checked that while testing...
