Title: Firefox crashes on maps
Post by: Neil Waldhauer on September 20, 2017, 08:43:49 pm
I'm seeing a pattern with Firefox 45.5.0 beta 8 where it crashes when the mouse hovers over a map. There is no .TRP file, although there is a beep.

It does not seem to matter if the map is Google or Bing.
A new profile brought relief, but on the second try, it crashed also.
I have one other user that I know that sees the same crash displaying a map.

Does anyone else see this behavior?
Is there anything else I could submit in a bug report other than a URL?

Same here, currently using 45.9.x build, but I'm hoping they will release an updated one soon since even the 45.9.x is a bit of a work-in-process. For example, here it exhausts a lot of memory very quickly, so literally within a couple hrs of use my FF is using about 1Gig of RAM... :( , mind you, I typically run about 8-10 separate FF windows across my virtual desktops...so yeah, I suppose maybe I'm taxing it a tad?

Using Dave's latest Seamonkey I do not have any problems with:
https://www.google.com/maps
https://www.google.com/maps
https://www.mapquest.com/

I believe it is built on later Firefox components than in those Firefox builds so it may be fixed in the next Firefox drop.

Hi Andy

Seamonkey 2.42.9esr crashes here when using Google maps as a result of zooming in and moving the map around.

Pete

It works here, using SM 2.49esr2s (different optimization- Os, same code). I do notice in the lower left corner it says Lite Mode, so might have noticed my bandwidth and given me a different version.
Might be a good idea for someone to open an issue.
BTW, using Os reduced the binary size by almost a third and seems to have helped with stability.

2.42.9esr Build identifier: 20170816231600
Works fine in all the maps I tried, zooming, moving, etc.

Hi

@Andy
Same build of Seamonkey and the crashes are repeatable.

The only difference I can see between Firefox and Seamonkey is that Firefox beeps when it crashes, Seamonkey does not and no trp file is generated.

@Dave
Seamonkey has only been able to use Google Maps in "Lite Mode" for a long time. Doubt if it is related to bandwidth, more likely that Seamonkey is an "unsupported browser" ie it is not Chrome or IE.

Pete

We don't have to guess:
https://support.google.com/maps/answer/3096703
It checks:
browser
OS
graphics card

We will fail the latter two (even if you have an otherwise supported graphics card, the driver would not be reported as compatible as it is looking for 3D).

Hi,

Here it works no issues with Firefox 38.8 and Seamonkey 2.35.

If I use the Firefox 45.5 and Seamonkey 2.49 it crashes and is unstable also tried in safemode.

For me Firefox 38.8 and Seamonkey 2.35 provided with ArcaOS is quite stable.

Regards

Rene

It crashes here with Firefox 31, 38 and 45. I got a little stability with the latest SeaMonkey and Bing or Google in hybrid mode. Once I switched to satellite, it crashes before I can get to the control to switch it back.

Hi Neil

I also confirm that Google Maps crashes here on Firefox 45.5.0.
OpenStreet maps only crashes when I click the "Edit" button.

But Bing maps works and does not crash here.

No problems here with FF 38.8 although it does go to 'lite mode' because of an 'unsupported browser'.

That being said even the lite mode maps are good and the satellite overlay works without problems.

@Neil, did you change the browser information string to present it as a different browser?  If so that might be the cause of the problem.

Guys...the FF 38.x release was for me probably the most stable release on our OS/2 platform.Just about everything I tried worked correctly, including Maps with heavy usage...however, the browser was getting outdated, so less and less stuff would actually allow you to use the numerous features, they simply became inaccessible.

FF 45.x here had definitely gone backwards in terms of stability and so forth, but, the browser at least allows the vast majority of the web site specific features to work. In my case, the Maps that were never an issue on 38.x are now a hit-n-miss on 45.x, but the G+ stuff now completely works!

I figured I might as well toss this one in because the thread so far has a mix of responses dealing with various FF releases.

The team is making great progress on 45.x, I for one wish that they would do another full release so we have a bit less of that debug overhead - my XUL.DLL is 435M in size, compared to 37M in 38.x, and despite the various highmem load options I have tried (code, data, or both) the browser pretty much eats up a good 1.5-1.8G in less than 12 hrs of use.

Yea, I find SM 2.42 much more unstable then 2.35 with crashes all over the JavaScript engine. The only problem I had with 2.35 and FF 38 was places.sqlite not finalizing with instant closing and the write ahead journal left (places.sqlite.wal) and history getting screwed, often just for some domains.
As for the large xul file, just lxlite it. Use http://home.earthlink.net/~steve53/betas/lxlt135-shl-20121201.zip (http://home.earthlink.net/~steve53/betas/lxlt135-shl-20121201.zip) and the flags that Mozilla uses are,
Code: [Select]
/yua /ydd /yxd /ynl /anp /b- /cs+ /d /i- /ml1 /mr2 /mf2 /r+ /u+ /x- /zs:0 /zx /zd.
Here with SeaMonkey built with -Os (optimize for size, with -O3 xul.dll was about 45MBs) I get
Code: [Select]
xul.dll initial:45403035 final:30567792 gain: 93.2%
You can lxlite all the other binary files as well, including the exes.

I have created a bug report here to help Bitwise document or solve the problem.

The latest version from the AN exp repo does not crash when browsing maps or using streetview.

Hi,

I have also tried the Firefox version 45.9 from ArcaNoa exp repo and it seems stable, with googlemaps it does not crash with some limited test as with Firefox 45.5. Hope they soon put in the release repo. Seems also quite responsive at least for me.

Awesome advice, I did all the DLLs and EXEs...massive compression...makes for a faster load for sure!

Thanks for the details re: Mozilla CLI parameters...I put them in the lxlite cfg file as [firefox] setup.

I put a copy of a build of the latest Firefox 45.9.0 sources built with -Os up on Hobbes if anyone wants to try it. I make no guarantees except that on my system it runs.

Hi Bill,

I put a copy of a build of the latest Firefox 45.9.0 sources built with -Os up on Hobbes if anyone wants to try it. I make no guarantees except that on my system it runs.

I wanted to give it a try, but attempting to start it produces a trap here, looks like a problem with NSPR4.DLL module, see the attached process TRP file.

Good news is that the FF team just announced they are ready to do an official GA release within the next few days!

I realized a bit after I uploaded it that it requires libcx 0.6 and Icu 56 from the netlabs experimental repo. That may be the problem.

I can't get it to start at all. The instructions for installing from .zip are not sufficient.

Hi Neil,

I can't get it to start at all. The instructions for installing from .zip are not sufficient.

If you pull that *.7z archive you will find that the contents follow the RPM package directory structure, makes sense since they built it from the RPM package itself...so if you are like me and are looking for the old layout you will have to move the stuff around manually. That is pretty simple though, just move the stuff from unzip_path\@unix_root\usr\lib\firefox... to your final destination, in my case that mapped to g:\apps\tcpip\firefox

Also, make sure you review the contents of the RPM_REQUIREMENTS in the main unzip_path location. I found at least a couple of RPM packages there which I previously did not have or had an outdated version (and yet I was able to successfully test the pre-release versions):

1) bww-resources-rpm
2) hunspell

...and certainly there is a DEV version listed of the RPM package libc-devel, which you probably do not want to install since that contains a pile of source code...but again, just my experience here, I did not install it, FF 45.9 is up and running fine here.

Hi Neil,

To get running you need the new version of libc + libcdevel from the Netlabs experimental repo. I unzipped the firefox zip  and copied it to the usr + subfolders same structure as the zipped firefox file. Then made a copy of firefox.exe on my desktop.

I am pretty sure the neded files wil be moved to Netlabs release repo pretty soon.

Here it runs just fine on ArcaOS.

1) bww-resources-rpm

Probably don't need this one either as it adds the icons to the desktop when installing the RPM

I did get Firefox 45 GA to run. I got libc and libcx from Netlabs-exp and installed them. I kept the RPM so I don't have to configure Netlabs-exp on every machine.

The maps issue is at least improved by Firefox 45. I haven't really exercised it, but doing what I did beta 8 would certainly have crashed and GA did not.
