Use Theseus. Highlight a process such as Firefox, then go to Process-->Shared Object Summary. Then scroll down on Shared Object Summary window until the left column shows the high memory. Low memory ends at 1FFF0000 and high start at B49C000 here. Then you have to read the other columns and perhaps use a calculator to convert from hex to decimal.
Perhaps try other processes.

It seems that I have the same addresses. It will take some study to understand what it is trying to say.

Thanks...

Interesting...

I finally got around to properly configuring eCS 2.2b2 on my main machine. Now, it should be set up exactly like eCS 2.1. There is one major difference though, Above512Watch shows that about 20 meg of something moved from lower shared memory space to upper shared memory space. That does leave more room for other things (like Firefox).

Is there some way to know what is loaded in upper, and lower, memory space, and how much space they are actually using?

I do have a record of Firefox using about 700 meg of shared memory space (from Theseus).

Well, it installed better, and I can run the supplied (mostly useless) programs. I cannot download any of the others though. This is what I see, when i try to install jFileBot (whatever that is):

I been working with the same directory (created long ago JavaApps), thx for pointing that out.

It is convenient, for testing purposes, to have a clean install, in a virtual machine, so you can test such things. I use VBox. You can do a snapshot of the clean install, and easily get back to it.

Quote
The installer doesn't create anything outside of 'JavaApps' directory.  It may have looked that way, but nothing was transferred if the 'JavaApps' was not created. All the zip commands fail as you pointed out, so you are good with that.

Well, it may be a quirk in the UNZIP program (as installed by ANPM) where it will unzip to the root, if the target directory doesn't exist, but that is what happened.

Quote
You can run the installer again, but after you change the values in the MY_CFG_FILE or delete that file.

I deleted it all, and installed again. Still no go. MY_CFG_FILE contains:
Code: [Select]
eJava = "W:\PROGRAMS\eJava"
JavaHome = "W:\PROGRAMS\JAVA160"
JavaProg = "W:\PROGRAMS\JavaApps"
combined_var = "COMBINED_VAR"
The last line doesn't look right.

Below is an updated installer CMD file

I will get that later (tomorrow) and see if it does any better.

Quote
and I will update the wget file.

Since you don't create that program, you should not be distributing it with your software. Somebody else distributes that, and you need to declare that it is a prereq for your software (with a place to download it). If you distribute it, you can cause problems for the user, depending on which one they happen to get started. WGET is probably not too serious, but it is not a good thing to do, as a rule.

Thanks Doug I hardly ever get any feedback.

Hmmm. I have WGET version 1.16. You are supplying version 1.10. You should never supply down level software, and any requirements that may change out of your control should be a requirement, not included.

Well that was a mistake. I ran the install command, which asked where to put various parts. When it asked for "JAVAAPPS", I mistakenly assumed that it would be created if it didn't exist. WRONG!. It then installed some programs in the root of the drive, and can't find them. Creating JAVAAPPS and moving the folders there didn't fix the problem. The instructions say don't run the installer again, and there seems to be no Uninstall. Now what?

I have found another major user of low shared memory space. E.EXE (actually AE.EXE). I tried to load a 160 MB log file, and watched as Above512Watch stepped down to 64K, when E.EXE popped up an error message. I was able to terminate the program, and that immediately returned the low shared memory. At least E.EXE handles the problem correctly, but if some other program had tried to get some low shared memory at the same time, and did not handle it properly, I expect that some sort of crash would have occurred.

Why would something like E.EXE use shared memory (low or high) for data?

I REMed that, and now loading Firefox DLLs high doesn't seem to crash at close (at least not as often, I have only done it half a dozen times).

Well, it is a little better, but still not useable. It would be good, if it wouldn't crash when I close it. When it does crash, it seems to mess up my profile. I cannot run FF, loaded low, at all, without DLLBASING=OFF. T'Bird is even worse, but that is probably why Above512, and Free Shared Mem don't show the memory being returned to the pool. FF, and TB, may not be able to load XUL.DLL because there is no contiguous area of memory to put it in. Unfortunately, I seem to have run out of things to remove, to free up more shared memory.

Don't use any of Doodles Cairo screensavers. Really they need to be updated to use current Cairo as the early versions of Cairo were buggy.

First I have heard of that. I did have one problem with DSS, where it would go to the screen saver, and it was impossible to wake it up again (the system was running fine, in the background). That happened when I happened to move the mouse, or press a key, just as it would start saving. I turned DSS off because of that. In this case, it doesn't seem to make any difference if it is turned off, or not. Just having the Cairo clock selected seems to eat up some shared memory space (not a lot, but some). I am going to leave DSS enabled, with the blank screen saver, and see if that happens again. If it does, I will probably uninstall DSS, since it really doesn't do anything useful anyway.

I am puzzled why you have so much more free shared memory space, although that is close to what I see on my laptops.

It seems that there are a number of things at play here:

1) I have been using "dllbasing=OFF" near the top of CONFIG.SYS, for years. I REMed that, and now loading Firefox DLLs high doesn't seem to crash at close (at least not as often, I have only done it half a dozen times).

2) I did manage to crash the system after changing Thunderbird to load high (using THUNDERBIRD!L.EXE), but I need to do more experimenting with that.

3) As an experiment, I started using the Blank screen, instead of the Cairo clock, with Doodle's Screen Saver. I need to do more experimenting with that too.

Now, I am staying close to 174 meg of lower shared memory free, according to Above512, or 181 meg, according to SHMEMMON. In either case, that is a LOT better than it has been. I have some work to get done, before I try closing FF, or playing with TB, again.

That was a great idea!
The program works well.

I have looked at that program, but I can't seem to find the secret incantation to make it actually work. I am pretty sure that my problem is understanding how to set up windows, and what it actually needs. Any possibility that you could produce some simple instructions?

Thanks...

Actually, I have used Above512, but the version that I have does not have the script. That does make the granularity somewhat better. Thanks...

I like this.  :D  I changed the script to add logging and date/time, and it only displays, and logs, when there is a change to the previous data. It is still checking once per second.

Seems to work okay, but I am still sure that it does not show that shared memory gets returned to the system when a program (such as Firefox) gets closed. Now, if anybody knows how to add information about what caused the changes, it would make this a LOT more useful.

What's the procedure for marking FF & TB for high memory ?

Same as for OpenOffice. Look in the CMD files for hints about how to do it.

Quote
Which dlls ?

I only do the DLLs that are in the private files for the app. I have not experimented with the common DLLs, yet. It seems that a program needs to be compiled to allow using high memory space, so I don't want to mess up programs that don't understand it.

Quote
Do you use the -c or the -b option.

I have tried both, but -b works okay with AOO, as long as I also use the Quick Start feature to prevent unloading the DLLs. I tried both with FF, but it was unusable because FF crashes on close, and about 80% of those crashes take out the whole system. That is still under investigation.

I've been told that hobbes contain to much old/obsolete stuff so it's out of the question to even be considered.

That is one of the main advantages. It has the old, as well as the new, and it is all well organized. There is also a very good search engine for it. If you ignore HOBBES, you are ignoring the very best, and most complete, repository for OS/2 software. If a developer is not posting their work at HOBBES, complain to them. HOBBES has been the OS/2 "store" for a lot of years, and I see no reason to stop using it.

but not yum/rpm because of the above problem with links

I don't understand what your problem is. When you use any version of any browser, on any platform, to download the ANPM installer (it is WarpIn), the WarpIn installer (it is self installing), and Firefox, or Seamonkey, then make them available to OS/2 (you probably need a USB stick, formatted as FAT32), you can install WarpIn, then ANPM. ANPM will detect that RPM/YUM is not installed, and it will install it. If it is installed, but out of date, you may need to follow the instructions at https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/anpm/ (page down a bit). Once ANPM gets everything up to date, and you install FF, or SM, the world is at your finger tips. ANPM will give you as much information about what the RPM packages contain as anything else can. I will admit that the information is somewhat limited, but that is a limitation of the RPM packaging system. I will also admit that RPM/YUM is a terrible way to do it, but that is what was chosen, so we are stuck with it. The alternative is to do it manually, and that is pretty well impossible. I guarantee that you will get some of it wrong, no matter how hard you try. You must remember that RPM packages contain more than just DLLs, there are also programs that a lot of software uses.

a web browser can't launch ANPM for such a yum/rpm-link.

It probably can, if you add something to the Options-> Applications list, but ANPM would need to watch for parameters, and decide what to do with them. Currently. it does not do that (at least it is not documented). If you can add that as a Feature Request to the Arca Noae Bug Tracker (ANPM section after logging in to https://mantis.arcanoae.com/login_page.php), it would be a good addition. Let me know if you can't do it, and I will.

If one want applications from other sources as well, not only from a vendor (group) or a small subset of... shareware, but also freeware and ?-ware.

That is one of the main reasons why HOBBES (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/) exists. Unfortunately, not everything gets posted there.

one can very well browse such pages and download and install the WarpIn packages once one have Firefox, Arora or some other web browser with all libraries installed.

Currently, that is a minor problem, since the OS usually includes a reasonably recent FF setup. However, it seems that those who do such things are planning to include FF (and probably SM and TB, when the time comes) in the YUM distribution channel. When (if) that happens, you will need to have RPM/YUM installed (with, or without, ANPM), to install FF. I am sure that ArcaOS will include enough smarts to get all of that done. Meanwhile, any browser, on any OS, should be able to get the ANPM installer, put it on a USB stick, and that will get RPM/YUM set up, and allow the user to work with it. Once FF is included with RPM/YUM, that should get things going. Until FF gets included in RPM/YUM, the user may need to download FF (either ZIP or WPI), and use that. Of course, they may also need WarpIn, or/or UNZIP.
