Applications / Re: WordPerfect for Windows 6.1 OS/2 tools
« on: August 27, 2019, 06:45:04 am »
I just found the "official" location for the tools, direct from Corel.

ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/WordPerfect/wpwin/61/os261.exe

That's for the US English version and WordPerfect 6.0a or 6.1.  They also have a copy of the patch for other language versions of WordPerfect for Windows 3.1, along with a variety of other patches and utilities at

ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/WordPerfect/wpwin/61/

Wow, The reason I uploaded to hobbes is that ftp.corel.com did not answer on sunday I assumed it was dead, anyway the file is the same as the one shipped by Novell except corel has added a note to the archive.

Hi,

The patch / OS/2 tools for Wordperfect 6.1 works fine on JFS or HPFS, the only issue is that it needs to use the 8.3 file names.  Of course this is no different from any Win3.x application.

The problem with JFS was with the native OS/2 5.x version of Word Perfect, not the WinOS2 version of 6.x

And 6x and 7x 16 bit Windows versions of WP are in general much more usable on OS/2 than the native version although v7 never got a port of the OS/2 tools like 5x and 6x

The integration tools seem to work except Quicklaunch (there's an error message about a missing DLL). Thanks!

Does it say what the missing dll is?

Sorry for assuming that WP itself shared the same extras.

It will install under ArcaOS and eCS, but it will only install reliably onto the C drive

FTR: my broken copy of WordPerfect for OS/2 used HPFS drive D: (< 2 GiB) indeed, which wasn't the boot drive.

It would install on other drives but there were some problems (that have escaped my mind, it's been a few years)

No, that's not it. It seems to be a native OS/2 version of WordPerfect 5.2 and it doesn't install under ArcaOS. I tried. There's an error message about insufficient RAM. Probably it was never compatible with Warp 4 in the first place.

It will install under ArcaOS and eCS, but it will only install reliably onto the C drive, and only on some file systems, so no JFS. It may also need the "large disk fix" during install, but it works fine without it.

SDD for OS/2 was renamed SNAP about 2000, the freeware release of SNAP can be found here:

They not only need a fast configurable ad blocker but a javascript blocker is a necessity considering the number of exploits that are delivered through javascript.  Without those two it is going to be almost useless (I would not let it near anything like internet banking and other sensitive sites).

The entirely sandboxed Javascript environment is a viable exploit delivery mechanism how?

This iseems to be the falkon web browser, previously known as Qupzilla, that Roderick is talking about, not falcon. Seems to be a KDE browser so I wonder if Bitwise is planning on porting part of KDE or if it'll run with just QT. Have to test.
If the Windows port is anything to go by it just needs QT, but similarly to Chromium based browsers the built in adblocker slows it down considerably.

Hi Olafur!

Sadly the machine has no USB onboard yet. It's a 486.

but they all communicate via USB chip on that card... and therefore cannot be used for DOS or Warp3.

If you use the USB hardware built into a motherboard you can use USB keyboards and mice with DOS and older OS/2 version by enabling the USB legacy option in the BIOS (Called USB emulation in most Dell BIOSes), that option makes USB HID devices appear as PS/2 devices to operating systems that have no USB drivers, in addition to that there actually exist free USB and USB HID drivers for DOS, and I am fairly certain that I got USB 1 & 2 working on my Warp Server 4 (Same codebase as Warp 3).

PS/2 <> USB adaptors are a bit hit and miss because of different signalling, some are sadly device specific.

I believe you are referring to the Pentium's floating point division bug.  This impacted certain calculations requiring precision at the fourth decimal place.

Minor historical nitpicking vis a vis the OP's question, the Pentium FP bug only affected the first generation of 60 and 66 MHz processors, the Socket 5 processors like the P90 are not affected.

What are the other reasons?

I literally do not know, you should ask Ian why some requests do not get answered.

Internet / os2site.com access

The official libc05 is here, (use an OS/2 browser) http://www.os2site.com/sw/dev/gcc/old/libc-0.5.1.exe.

A number of people have for one reason or another no access to os2site.com, so it is not a recommended source

Here is an alternative that does not rely on difficult to get login rights
