I'm interested in finding GFortran. All I've found so far is an emx-based build from 1999 on Hobbes.

I'll add that Apple iCloud mail has been on two-factor authentication for years. It works fine in Thunderbird, and probably would work in PMMail.

Programming / Re: i686 vs Pentium 4
« on: March 06, 2022, 03:23:53 pm »
As an end user, I don't care what instruction set is used. But if I change my settings from i686 to pentium4 with rpm/yum, everything should still work afterward. For me it's not the instruction set, but the quality of the rpm specs.

Martin had to remove rpm/yum entirely and start over to change from i686 to pentium4. If that is what is needed, then please supply a tool to do it in one quick operation.

I've never encountered TalkThru. Can you supply any information?

Under PPP settings, there are options for fast and slow. Fast actually makes things worse, I can no longer connect reliably. Slow, on the other hand, results in a good connection. I was able to surf the web, but with the patience of a typical web page loading in 10 minutes.

The IBM dialer probably lacks the versatility of Injoy dialer, but on a better phone line, perhaps it would work.

The next question is how to switch from a failing Ethernet connection to the dialer? I expect to have to remove everything to do with Ethernet networking before activating the dialer. Is that right?

Code: [Select]
net stop messenger /y
net stop req /y
dhcpmon -t
ifconfig lan0 down
ifconfig lan0 delete
route -fh
arp -f

I may have to try ZOC, but for the time being, I looked back at my e-mail from Feb, 2017 and I see the socktidy.exe issue.

Socktidy is launched from B4TCP.CMD, so I commented it out. I disabled Ethernet by renaming SETUP.CMD.

Injoy now connects. I can ping my server, I can ftp to my server, I can load a simple web page with Firefox. The connection is slow, and the Injoy window is full of errors. Eventually Injoy crashes. Oddly for such an old program, a .TRP file is left behind. (see attachment)

I'm hoping the crash is just because of my bad landline.

I finally thought of looking in the In-joy logs. This is with setup.cmd removed, but I tried with it in place, and it makes no difference. Apparently socket error WSAENOTSOCK (10038) after including thread is happening a lot.

It's been a long time since I used Injoy, but while it says there is a successful connection, I don't recall how to make that useful.

I've got a standard setup.cmd that makes LAN 0 DHCP. If I then connect Injoy, I should see something in PPP0. But I don't get connectivity. I can't ping, nslookup, tracerte. I'm wondering how it gets set up.

I want to be able to unplug the Ethernet cable, and have packets go to dial-up instead. There is a resolve.inj in the etc directory, but resolv2 still points to the DHCP LAN0 version.

Injoy does seem to work. I took the modem strings over to the IBM Dialer, and it still does not work.

I am puzzled about why Injoy can work, but the IBM dialer does not.

Reactivating this thread, I got a valid password. It works on website and if I use modemtst.exe, it works there, too.

But configuring the IBM Dialer seems to be the problem. I try to connect there, and I get errors. I'm way out of practice for dial-up modems, but clearly, I have set something up wrong. What can cause this error?

The OS/2 side might be looking in the wrong place.

Can you get the source code for the Win32 driver? That would be easy to build in Visual Studio, and then the Windows driver could be customized to use only the subset of Win32 that GenMac supports.

modemtst has a text window. Logging isn't possible, but you can cut/paste from the window to the system editor.

So I was able to see precisely that login was the failure. I'm hoping to make progress in finding the actual login userid/password.

I didn't know about modemtst.exe, and it is a great tool for modems, and probably for serial ports testing in general. This proves the modem works and it is just a password issue.

There is no speaker in this modem, so I attached a phone handset to the line, and I listened to it as I made my connection.

The first attempt got a “We're sorry, your call can not be completed as dialed” message. My phone does not need a “9” in order to access an outside line.

I accessed OS/2 Dialer settings and changed the phone number to remove the “9,”. Listening in using my handset I can hear it negotiate for a while, then the connection is good. Now I get a PAP authentication error. I tried the default modem strings, and also the ones you posted above, but there is no change.

It's been a long time since I listened to the modem song as it negotiates the connection.

I think I have the userid and  password, right, so what else can cause PAP authentication error?

I'm using IBM Dialer (SLIPPM) to try to make a connection with the modem. The modem seems to respond with OK to an initialization command, but then the dialer never seems to actually dial.

I remember, a long time ago, modems used to have a speaker and make quite distinctive sounds when they connected. I wish that was happening here.
