I notice you never answered this question from Roderick:

When the system has hung, does it respond to CTRL ALT F10 twice

I remember it as Ctrl-Alt-Num Lock twice.

It's supposed to start a system dump.

Counting the number of users more or less useless. IP is better than UUID. UUID counts user's systems, not users. For instance, I prepare systems for customers by updating from NetLabs. I'm just one guy, but you will count every system I attempt to prepare.

It's better to count contributing users. It's better still to make it easier to be a contributing user.

Starting out by trying to count users to demonstrate that someone is getting NetLabs without contributing is not useful; it is a sign of mental illness. Maybe take a vacation or something if you are counting users for the purpose of finding out how many "freeloaders" there are.

If the goal is permanent full time employment for BitWise, think about selling subscriptions and publicly showing the results. I think we agreed that 300 subscribers at 10 Euro would finance them indefinitely. (I think 200 at 10 Euro and 10 at 100 Euro is more reasonable) This is a much better thing to count than IP or UUID. It would be better still if someone at BitWise was involved and running this.

I agree with Mr Gay. This is a marketing problem.

I donate a portion of Blonde Guy profits to BitWise every time I sell a computer. An enormous number of people in the world do not buy a Blonde Guy computer. I do not disparage or insult them. Instead, I try harder to make a computer that they want. I thank my customers for buying a computer.

Before I worked at Blonde Guy, I worked at a computer company run by engineers. We had a lovely software library we sold for $7500. We struggled to make money. But we hired a marketing person. He sold one copy of our software. For $2,500,000. I learned an important lesson on the role of engineering and of marketing in business.

If I could make one concrete suggestion, it would be to sell space on the About... page. Donors can be named for a fee.

I purchased RJ CD writer when I was using ecomstation but the license apparently doesn't work on Arcaos... since it was locked to ECS... so that money was just down the drain.

RSJ CD-Writer works just fine under ArcaOS here. You know, the final version of RSJ CD-Writer was built with IBM CSet++ 2.1. RSJ was always quite particular about the environment and it still is, since nothing really changed for a long time. I only use it for USB since the ArcaOS DVD Tools is much better anyway, for my needs.

netstat -n

Look for lines with "physical address".

Hardware / Re: Blue Lion and Seagate BarraCuda 510 M.2 NVMe SSD?
« on: May 30, 2021, 04:01:52 am »
I've got a machine booting from a 2 TB M.2 NVMe SSD using the release driver. It's 2-3 times faster than a SATA 6 SSD. I'd advise to read the readme for configuring BIOS and Config.Sys. Basically, the NVMe drive should be first in BIOS and the driver should be the first in Config.Sys.

307

The storage driver provides 48 bit LBA addressing. And the GPT filter driver uses this interface. That way you can access a +2TB disc with ArcaOS.

As I understand it, the GPT filter driver will split a 6 TB drive into 3 units of 2 TB each, allowing you to access a 6 TB drive as, for example, E:, F: and G:. This is different from a single drive letter with 6 TB, which is currently only possible on a network drive.

Hi Neil,

(* can network directories be larger than 2 TB?)

I believe so..... My Shared drive reports: 2,908,314,763,264 bytes (2,708GB) free :)

Then there is a different limit for network drives, and that limit can be exploited to support large drive (greater than 2 TB). But large files (greater than 2TB) may be a permanent restriction given our kernel.

So there are a few ways to extend the life of the 32-bit kernel.

I'm not saying that the convenience of using the host operating system's support for WiFi, bluetooth and so on isn't worthwhile. I see Arca Noae does supply some documentation for running in Virtual Box and other environments.

309

On large disc bigger then 2 TB GPT is supported. So tha is off the table it seems that issue.

No, it is not off. If you actually publish a driver to split a larger GPT drive into 2 TB logical chunks, you are still limited to 32 bits. You have at most 24 drive letters x 2 TB, so you can sort of push back to 48 TB. File objects are still limited to 2 TB, and volumes are still limited to 2 TB. It's a hack, and while it would be a welcome addition, it is not the long term fix that 64 bit support could be.

Hardware / Re: IBM Thinkpad with floppy drive
« on: May 26, 2021, 04:25:07 pm »
OK, I didn't have a floppy to try on T540p. But after Ultrabay 2000 was Ultrabay slim, and that worked for sure on T43 2xxx machines. After that, I don't remember for sure. Ultrabay slim might work in T61. But Ultrabay 2000 is the last officially supported bay for floppies.

After T43, ultrabay is serial ATA for sure.

Applications / Re: Interest in Dr. Web Antivirus?

As a follow on, would it be interesting to have Dr. Web as an option for ArcaOS pre-loaded systems?

I think Darius asked the right question. Why do we need 64-bit?

The 2TB barrier for DASD can be overcome without it.
The 4 GB barrier for memory use has already been somewhat lifted with the new RAM drive.

But do not underestimate code bloat. At some point in the not-to-distant future, a simple web browser will not fit into the largest available OS/2 addressable space.

A good 64-bit API added to OS/2 could possibly make it the only 64-bit operating system that can execute compiled programs from the 1980s.

As far as an UltraBay Floppy that can be swapped in place of the CD drive, I think the T540p series is the last one.

Programming / Re: JSon to Rexx (stem)

If I catch it in time, I can ctrl-C to stop it. Otherwise only the power switch.

There are C language JSON interpreters, but it was so nice to have the REXX one.

The website at https://jsonformatter.curiousconcept.com/ says the file is valid JSON, and it shows that the file is really not that complex. There are just 11 items, one of which is an array.

Programming / Re: JSon to Rexx (stem)
« on: May 20, 2021, 08:32:33 pm »
I'm waking this thread up after a long time. I started to write a REXX program to control the GL.iNet family of routers. These tiny routers can provide wireless support. But the user interface does not work with Firefox 45.

So I use curl and an API to control the router. So far, I can go to some WiFi hotspots, connect to them and surf the internet.

In order to do this, I needed to interpret the JSON file that CURL returns. So here I am. I used this:
  * Filename: JSon2Rx.cmd
 *   Author: Jan-Erik
 *  Created: Sat Feb 23 2013
 *  Purpose: Interpret a JSon-file and place in stem

I found it had a problem with one of the files I got. So I tried this one:
/*
 * Filename: fromJSon.cmd
 *   Author: JANERIK
 *  Created: Sat Feb  3 2018

Amazingly, this hangs my ArcaOS computer. I type

fromJSon curldns.txt

and it never completes. Is there something wrong with my computer, or is fromJSon.cmd doing something wierd?
