« on: January 02, 2018, 04:27:02 am »
A quick side question,

what size is the ahci-2.04.exe package? I see the latest version is a lot smaller, I haven't been able to install it as the file is corrupt so after a couple of weeks I have just re downloaded it but it still shows as corrupt, unable to run the exe or extract the files.

 98876           0  ahci-2.04.exe

Ian you are a native English speaker I think. Did you understand what Andre is talking here? Do you know what the problem is? Do you understand what he means with f.i. all OS/2 WPA2 DHCP clients?

I does actually stir a distant memory of something not closing down properly with an earlier wpa_supplicant version, so I've run with that. WPA2 I assume means that André is using the supplicant, which comes with the DHCP version from https://www.isc.org/ so I simply make another assumption unless someone wants to correct me :)

One last question, do you really think Andre is human? For me this thread is another proof for sort of AI attack to this forum. Looking at his stats page he seem to have no regular sleeping time too. Although no proof but another sign.

What is human? Sorry, I'm doing Neuroscience and psychology at present at UWA, and that has led to some interesting discussions as to what and when we decide that Artificial Intelligent has really arrived in our little world :o)

I consider spending some time in filling other buzz words here in this thread to see what triggers even more crazy reactions.

Please do, it may provide some interesting information to fill in the gaps. André also uploads a reasonable amount of software corrections and programs to hobbes as well. I'll leave it up to him if he wish's to let others know the name he uses there.

And bang, there is another lot of CD's archived - http://www.os2site.com/sw/dev/developer/index.html

Hi André,

In XWorkplace I'm sure there are different shutdown settings including something along the lines of a forced shutdown, I'm otherwise too busy at present doing some major archiving to check what I have on my thinkpad, which I only use at university (March-May and August-October). All I can tell you is that when I use wpa_supplicant, I simply click on Shutdown from any menu and the thinkpad shuts down without myself having to worry about clicking on anything or killing other process's.

xwp derivatives are programs like the slimmed down version as eComStation provides.

Apparently all OS/2 WPA2 DHCP clients have to show a close-dialog to an user shutting down

It doesn't do that on my IBM R61 laptop, maybe because as Andi mentioned, we all use xwp or derivatives  :)

Hi André,

From memory there is a utility to do exactly what you are talking about as I used it in the early 2000's, I just cant remember what it's called :(
Hopefully someone else will remember it.

Programming / Re: VAC3.65 / 3.08 inline assembly? How to insert INT 3?
« on: December 24, 2017, 12:37:30 pm »
Rick,

Words have more than one meaning, context matters as does the way the meanings of words changes with time and population generation, so does respecting others and not intruding on/in there/their space or beliefs.

This forum is not here for you to complain about how others talk or differences in culture, it is for all OS/2 and derivative operating system users to talk together, seek information, help, and exchange ideas no matter what religion or culture they are from. Take the words as they are said in context, if you don't like something then simply ignore it. Complaining about others in a fashion that I see as meaningless does no more than generate noise and serves no purpose. It is not helpful to you, to others, nor to whichever deity you may believe in.

We are all different and the measure of a person is how well they take these differences and work with them, not complain about or change others because they are not like you.

Now smile, go do something different and have a happy Christmas when it arrives in your part of the world :)

Do you really talk to people with such disdain, Rich?  Are people of such low value that you can assault them anonymously across the Internet in this rude way?

If you have information to help people then help them.  Don't belittle them.

RTFM is part of modern language, it's not going away and is simply a saying. Rich is not assaulting or belittling anyone, unless they wish to change the interpretation of what is said. This is simply a quick method of saying the answer is in the manual, and many of us do not actually read manuals, though we should :)

As Martin mentioned, PMView can open, edit, convert files to LGO format.
To replace the bootlogo ensure you use 640 x 480 pixels, 300 x 300 dpi. I don't think the pixel height and depth has changed from the early days.

General Discussion / Re: Good Bye Net Neutrality
« on: November 26, 2017, 04:09:34 pm »
Hi Martin,

They way I view it is the owner of a network is at liberty to do as they wish with that network, they own it. If a customer does not like it they can change providers as happens in a true free market but I also realise that the USA seems to be comprised of several area based monopoly providers. Most odd for a country that call's itself the land of the free and example of a free market, when US network providers appear to have government help in making it difficult if not impossible for others to create new networks.

In Australia, we have what we call the big 4 (Telstra, Optus, Vocus and TPG), there were many more network providers but with the advent of the Australian government getting involved and creating something called the NBN (a new government owned wholesaler), all the little guys sold out and so we ended up where we where 27 years ago with 4 primary network infrastructure owners and a new government owned and controlled fibre provider.

Still, at least they have infrastructure all over the place so Australians still have choice, which prohibits companies from getting carried away with anti competitive practices but eventually I fear that we too will have a similar problem when there is once more only once primary wholesaler for network access. Sigh.

Maybe those in the US of A should tell the different tiers of their government to ignore the lobbyist's and allow network providers to operate in a true free market network without government interference, there would then be no need to consider ideas like Net Neutrality  :o)

Sometimes I think we humans are forever doomed to recreate the same problems over and over as we never learn from past mistakes.

Of cause, it's different in every country so that is one big plus, apart from the joint  government control, namely USA, UK, NZ, Canada, and Australia - which I will omit the name of the collaboration.

I really think you're not human but some kind of (badly programmed) AI. Only here to spam this forum with your mostly unrelated junk to annoy the last remaining OS/2 users.

We do not discriminate here, not as far as I've aware, so even badly programmed machines are welcome :)

Though it would be nice to confine unrelated junk to the relevant forum.

Networking / Re: Subnets routing?
« on: November 08, 2017, 12:26:20 pm »
InJoy Firewall includes NAT, you can also run more than one copy to create two subnet's but this is something I've not done for over 10 years and have no idea if Bitwise works version allows that (including in it's license).

With your x:\mptn\bin\setup.cmd file, you can add other routes without problems even without using InJoy but once more this is something I am very rusty with as it's been so long.

route -fh
arp -f
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
ifconfig lan0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
dhcpstrt -i lan1 -d 0
ifconfig lan2 192.168.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add default 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.255 -hopcount 1

experiment with:-
==> route add -net xxx.xxx.xxx.xx netmask 255.255.255.255 -hopcount 1
or
==>route add -host 192.168.2.1 10.0.0.2

ie, you need to add a route from your second network to where you want the packets to go, also, hmm, no idea how it works with DHCPd :o)
I would use static IP's as its easier to plan out on paper, then use InJoy's DHCPd module to hand out IP's if you need to for other devices.
Actually, come to think of it.. I think you can setup InJoy with a seperate range for it's DHCPd to the two static ranges ..

Quote
devices on lan0 would be effectively hidden from devices on lan2?
Assuming your routing has been setup correctly then yes, devices on LAN2 can be hidden from LAN1 but remember this is only on the software layer. Unless it is required I would setup your internet modem/router with a second internal IP if it has more than one ethernet port and physically separate the networks. Depends on what you wish to do like monitor via InJoy's GUI etc.

Hope I'm not confusing you, I'm getting old :)

General Discussion / Survey - technology and the Internet

The following is a link https://qeasttrial.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6hVHWh8VetkWpP7 to an
online voluntary survey being conducted as part of a research project. We are trying to obtain as many responses as possible and I am asking for your help in accomplishing this. If you are interested in responding to this survey, and you are aged 50 or older, click on the link below. It will take you approximately 15-20 minutes. Your participation is completely voluntary and all of your answers will be kept confidential. I appreciate your time.

Technology & Aging

Next, I would like you to consider helping us disseminate the survey through your social networks. If you could do the following, we would
appreciate it:
Post this on your Facebook wall
Forward it to members of your social networks via email
Post to listservs to which you belong
Tweet it if you use Twitter.

Thanks so much for your help on our research project! If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please contact me (Shelia Cotten) at cotten at msu dot edu.   (Michigan State University)

Thank you in advance for your help with this study!

I now have no interest in the results of this survey :o)
This would have to rank as the worse worded survey I have see or participated in. It really needs at least an option for Not Relevant or to follow the likert scale  with responses scored along a range.

I have left the survey link here in case anyone is interested in it, though the quality of the survey is something I would expect from a first year university student, that thinks only their age group use and understand technology.
