Applications / Converting .BOO to PDF ?
« on: April 04, 2019, 03:24:46 pm »
Hi

What do you suggest to:
1) Open .Boo files
2) Convert them to PDF

I want to do that because I want to have some books readable on the internet and not everybody has a .boo reader.

Programming / CommonPoint for OS/2
« on: April 02, 2019, 11:13:09 pm »
Hi

Talking about old things, I want to see if someone had ever got their hands on "CommonPoint for OS/2". It was an app framework produced by Taligent. There were some articles (1995) that some betas and released were available for OS/2, and even IBM announce the discontinuation of this product on 1999.

Please let me know if someone has it, or knows if it was included on some DevCon CDs, or anything about it.

Applications / XFree86-OS/2
« on: March 13, 2019, 10:48:39 pm »
Hi

One of my frustrations is that I was never able to run the X11 GUI from XFree86-OS/2.

Is it possible to run it under ArcaOS today inside a Virtual Machine? Or is it require some specific hardware?
I want to give it try, nothing specific, I want to try some software that was ported to it as a curiosity.

About: [Arca Noae] Arca Noae progress report: ArcaOS on UEFI-only hardware

Hi

Very good news. It is great to see finally (referring to the old Mensys/XEU days) some progress for the present of the platform. Even that UEFI support is still on very early stage, it is good to see that something has started, I'm looking forward to test that on the future.

I'm on the "Arca Noae Test" mailing list and even that I don't contribute as much as I would like to, I really see that things are moving to release Arca Noae 5.0.4 and the progress for the localization releases for ArcaOS 5.1. There is a lot of details on each update and a lot of movement there.

As you can see, today I'm very optimistic about the platform. Remember that ArcaOS 5.0.0 was released on May 15, 2017, and it had eclipsed any eComStation functionality in only one year. I really hope that after the ArcaOS 5.1 launch with local languages support, Arca Noae can focus more on the present of the platform (drivers, drivers, drivers) and also start thinking on the long term future (component replacement, API improvement, WPS improvements, growing the user base and more bold things).

Games / DOS Gaming and ArcaOS
« on: February 26, 2019, 06:52:00 pm »
Hi

I want to start now with some DOS games on ArcaOS. Which DOS games do you suggest to try/test on ArcaOS ?
This Internet Archive page can help with some ideas/insipiration.

I want to try both ways, the DOS VDM  and DOSBox, and see how everything goes.

From the other game thread I kind of understoodd that I'm limited with DOS VDM with the sound support until we have an updated DTA driver with DOS support. I haven't found any other way to get DOS sound with Uniaud yet.

Please let me know of any links to the old days when people used to post links of the suggested DOS VDM configuration for each game.

Suggestion, comments and feedback is always welcome.

Hi

These are the SDL games I checked to have some issues:
- 2 Pong       0.6      SDL / SDD   GNU GPL      *** Require SDD
- Amoebax   0.2.1   SDL              GNU GPL      *** Old SDL12.DLL
- Barrage            SDL / SDD   GNU GPL      *** SDD dependency
- Dave Gnukem   0.56      SDL / SDD   GNU GPL             *** Requires SDD
- Fish Fillet   1.0.1      SDL              GNU GPL      *** No run
- Lopan      0.9      SDL / SSD           GNU GPL      *** Require SDD
- Marryampic2   0.6      SDL / SDD   GNU GPL      *** Requires SDD
- Primate Plunge      SDL              Freeware           *** OLD SDL12.DLL / Hangs
- QNetWalk   1.4      SDL /KSDL12.DLL GNU GPL   *** OLD SDL12.DLL
- Rocks n Diamonds   3.2.4 SDL              GNU GPL      *** Can not load Joystick

If someone wants to test these with the latest SDL and make those works without the SNAP driver, please let me know.
For the moment these ones looks like good candidates to be recompiled with the latest SDL.

Utilities / Copying files from an HPFS HDD
« on: February 11, 2019, 01:20:36 am »
Hi.

I need to help someone to copy some files from an OS/2 HPFS HDD  (possible IDE) of an old machine, and mount that HDD on a different machine. What do you suggest?

This person is using Linux, suggestion with this OS is welcome, but other techniques are welcome too.

I was thinking that possible he can do a full  image of the HDD, maybe with some IDE to USB adapter, and install OS/2 on a Virtualbox and mount as secondary drive the image. But I don't know any software that can create a compatible virtual HDD that can work with Virtualbox.

Suggestions are welcome.

Games / ArcaOS - Retro Gaming Machine
« on: February 01, 2019, 08:14:42 pm »
Hi

Since there was some interest at Warpstock and on the forum taking about the potential of ArcaOS (and OS/2) as a "Retro Gaming Machine" that can run DOS and Win 3.1 games, I want to do some tests and configure my Thinkpad L420 for that.

I'm not much into DOS and Win16 these days, so my first question will be ask for tips and suggestion to enable the audio on DOS and Win-OS/2 for my machine. UniAud seems to be running as audio driver, but tips to configure it for DOS and Win16 are welcome.

Programming / 2001 OS/2 related repos on Github
« on: January 24, 2019, 03:16:43 pm »
Hi

Today I reached the 2001 repositories mark on the OS2World Github Organization.

I started to organize all the OS/2 related source code I was able to find on 2012  and I still have more places when I need to look for source code. The idea was not to resurrect all project, but to have the source code in a public place where it can be indexed, searched and reused for a variety of reasons like looking for source code samples and documentation.

Today I can say that the organization is not perfect and there can be some issues on the repositories, but it is interesting to put more OS/2 source code on the public eye and I'm having fun searching inside the zip files of old CDs.

Github and git repositories are still a learning experience for me, so if someone has a suggestion or knows tools for github that can be useful  (like finding duplicated code on the same organization), please let me know.

I'm still looking for more OS/2 books development samples (that use to came in a diskette with the book) and more OS/2 source code.

Does somebody knows where I can get the ERRORMGR.DLL file? I want to try this software and it asks for this DLL since it was recently open sourced.

Programming / Experience with decompilers with OS/2 programs
« on: January 10, 2019, 03:23:14 pm »
Hi

Does anybody has experience with decompiler software (under any platform) and trying to decompile OS/2 programs ?
I had found some developers that no longer has the source code (lost in HDD crash) of his OS/2 programs and game permission to release his binaries as public domain with permission to decompile.

But my question is if something useful or something that can help recreate the source code of the program can be produced with decompilers. Is there any experience ?

Applications / Mounting a VDI image as a drive
« on: January 04, 2019, 02:59:17 pm »
Hi

Do you know if there is a way to mount a VDI hard disk image as a drive on OS/2 running on real hardware (not virtualized)?
If it is not VDI, are there any other formats that can be mounted?

Hi

What do you think it will be interesting to do on the 2019 as community efforts for the platform?

The obvious for me will be to:
1) Keep supporting Arca Noae with ArcaOS.
2) Keep supporting Bitwise works to produce more open source software on 2019.
3) Support individual developers creating and porting software to this platform.

But what about from the community side and what us as individuals can do for the platform?
And I know we are already doing things like:
- People helping people on the forums.
- Insisting on collecting open source code and asking for more code to be released as open.
- Documenting EDM/2 and OS2World wiki.
- Articles, blog posts and videos posted from time to time on the Internet.
- Hobbes keeps sharing files and OS2site also collecting things.
(those came at the top of my mind right now)

But what other ideas do you have for next year that can be produced by the community?

There is no right or wrong answer, just want to brainstorm a little bit.

Regards
