Hi

Let's see if things improves, I disabled the auto-ads.

I would need to find another script for the cookie warning, since it was noticed by Roderick and required by the EU law.

Hi Roderick.

Thanks for your concern. I will check on that.

Under UTILS. An APP is something standalone, serving a main purpose. A util is something that supports the user in interfacing with his computer.
But of course, that will always be arguable.
Yes, it is arguable, and I agree "desktop enhancements" should be under UTILS.
..but if
- XWP and XFolder should be consider WPS Utilities (under /pub/os2/util/wps).
- And there is already a structure for each kind of app.  For example, a WPS Calendar is a wps app (/apps/wps)  but there is also "/apps/calendar" which seems the correct place.
It will make "/pub/os2/apps/wps" empty.

Hi

I'm trying to understand the difference between:
- /pub/os2/apps/wps - Workplace Shell related applications
and
- /pub/os2/util/wps - WorkPlace Shell/Presentation Manager utilities.

I'm not sure where should "desktop enhancement" software should be located, under "util" or "apps" ?

Note: I removed Doug, Lars and my rant since I'm the OS2World moderator and I didn't want to fall into the game.

I will discuss how to reorganize and preserve OS/2 files in hobbes or any other site. It is a non-profit effort for the community and it will fall under the US Copyright Law 107 (Fair Use).

Hi Ian
Keep in mind that NMSU probably do not want to change to much, it is for student's to do a final test of code on, it needs to be a stable server for at least that semester, a server that has known variables that have been documented for the students to use in writing code to test for their semester marks, radically changing it would very likely mean rewriting course manuals, and that can involve the exams department, legal, and other University departments. It can be a right royal pain for whoever is charged with looking after the archive, like Curtis, who also has other duties.
I don't know about it, maybe you have more information. Is the hobbes server also used for student practice? I haven't see any change in hobbes for some time. I don't know if the server is supposed to provide any service to the students while it also offer hobbes (OS/2 files) to the world.

I had sent again an email to Curtis and see if I can get more privileges to work to improve hobbes, like processing incoming directory, relocating files, improving file names, short and long descriptions, and possible removing old versions releases of software.

As an idea, maybe we can work on OS2Site, to create an alternative file path location on the ftp when we can reorganize "ALL PUBLIC" OS/2 related files and turn it into the  "FULL Repository" with all versions of the software we can get.  Maybe I can work on the "/MARTIN/" to start drafting the idea, if you agreed to give me full access to it. ftp?

Regards

Note: I had corrected the "ALL" to "ALL PUBLIC" trying to find out what freaked some people for something that does not even exist yet.

https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.10.40-20210527.zip - code updated to linux 5.10.40 level...

Hi
I tested it with ArcaOS 5.0.6 VM guest on VBox 6.1.14 (Windows 10 host).
- VM Intel HD Audio: Works, Audio control working, no traps.
- VM ICH AC97: Works, Audio control working, no traps.

After that test I updated VirtualBox to 6.1.22 (same Windows 10 host)
- VM Intel HD Audio: Produce audio, but gives looping sound at end. Audio control working, no traps.
- VM ICH AC97: Works, Audio control working, no traps.

I did these because on the past I noticed a strange Audio problems (Looping sounds) when I updated VBox from 6.1.14 and I want to confirm these with your UniAud release. I don't know what the VirtualBox team did with the "Intel HD Audio" in these newer releases. It is not a problem of these Uniaud release, or Uniaud, something was changed on Virtualbox (Ticket 20273).

Thanks Paul for this update.

Hi

I remember that on the early 2000 I was expecting to see a change similar in software from 16bits to 32bits when Intel announced the 64bit Itanium. At the end Itanium was incompatible with all the 32bits software (it was a too aggressive change of instruction set), the processor flop, and the 64 bits adoption on PCs took a slower path. AMD created the x86-64 instruction set (2003) which was retro-compatible with 16 and 32 bits, and the adoption took that path. I think that by 2010 the 64bits adoption PC was 50% (with Windows 7).
The only improvement I saw from 32bits to 64bits was the adoption of better video edition, playback and compression, maybe because of having more memory access.

The "2TB barrier DASD"  and "4 GB memory barrier" are issues of the present. For a 64bits kernel you need to think on the future, how a 64bits kernel can improve the OS experience? what extra things can be added to ArcaOS with 64bits support?
If the goal is to have the same old comfortable thing on new hardware, without any expectation of future improvement for the platform, there is no case for 64bits.

If someone wants a 64bits kernel for OS/2, it is because they want the OS to evolve, get more relevance and be able to get the full resources that the hardware provide.

Hi

I like the theories about a OS/2 64bits kernel. Here it is the forum thread which everybody is free to continue.

OS/2 does not need a 64bits kernel, a 64bits kernel is needed if there will be a long term strategy for the platform when we want to use all the resources of new hardware. Maybe a dumb comparison will be to buy a new car, and never turn on the radio, wipers or lights. The basic use or the car is being applied (to mobilize people from one place to other), but you are not using the complete experience.

I prefer the idea of grabbing an new 64bits microkernel with market potential (Zircon?) and replace the OS/2 kernel with it. You grab the OSS kernel, create the OS/2 binary interpreter, the CPI API clone and try to run OS/2 interpreted over it (PM, SOM, WPS, Apps). Easy to say, but a lot of work and lot of little details need to be worked out.

Hi David

Your opinion is respected, and I guess you want to tell us about it just to inform us, and I also guess you don't want arguments for people trying to convince you or debate your point of view.

The community has different points of view, some other are happy with ArcaOS emulated, others want bare metal and some others want to try old software with OS/2 Warp has a retro-hobbie to remember the good old days. ... and some others want all of them :)

What I agree with you is the lack of a "long term strategy" for the platform. I also used to criticized Serenity Systems with eCS, that at some point it looked that they only wanted to patch OS/2 to have the minimum necessary to run on PCs.

About ArcaOS, my opinion is that the first part of their strategy it to have a solid OS/2 running on today's hardware. They want people to be able to buy a new PC or laptop, and being able to run ArcaOS, and their OS/2 favorite app. ArcaOS 5.1 is going to be an important milestone, like modern hardware support (UEFI, GPT, NVMe ) and multilingual support. Once that is accomplished some new goals should be defined.

On the other side, I have seen the spark on Lewis' eyes (Arca Noae) when he talks about how OS/2 should be today if IBM haven't pulled the plug. I honestly think his motivation for the platform is to turn it awesome, instead of just a commercial motivation.

Yes, there is no "long term strategy" for ArcaOS yet as a platform, but the first steps to make it usable on today's hardware it is necessary. I hope that once ArcaOS 5.1 is released and stabilized, it is going to be time to move forward on what killer apps do we need and what OS/2 components needs to be updated. I wish everything can be faster, but I guess the speed is according the resources they have.

Hi Andreas

Can you give a little bit more details of your system to try to find out why it does not trap to you?
Here it is my "testlog generic" log just to compare driver versions.

Hi

It can be interesting if someone without the 14.202 kernel can do the testing too. Like OS4User did, but maybe with the OS/2 Warp 4.52 kernel or an older ArcaOS without 14.202.

Hi Roberto
The Theseus program, when I click twice on the USBMON it generates a TRAP.
If someone is not produced any TRAP, let them tell me and I will tell them what I want.

I have reproduced the trap. I have ArcaOS 5.0.6 and Theseus 4.001.00 installed.
On the main Theseus page, if I click "USBMON" I get an OS2KRNL trap.  I tried two times for the moment.

I'm still fighting to install Dialog Enhancer. I will appreciate any help to test it out.

Hi

Reading the comments, I'm leaning to the idea of the two repositories.

One repository that stores everything, like new and old versions of drivers and software. Why? Because there are people that want to experiment with old hardware and old OS/2 versions, and require an specific old driver or software, that may not be supported for old OS/2 versions (or hardware).

The second repository, that may be hobbes, where we only store the latest versions and newer release of software, and possible only the software that works/runs with Warp 4.52, eCS and ArcaOS.

But this is just an early idea. I still do not get any feedback from the hobbes administrator to see if we can go forward with the idea.

TOOLS?
I'm also looking for ideas on which web script or tool may be good to create a web site like hobbes or os2site, that may be very simple. It had been hard to find something like that on the web, it seems that on these days, the internet does not want to share files...we are on the era of blogs, pictures, videos, articles, but not files :)

I wish there could be something simple like an ftp where you put the "xyz.zip" file with a "xyz.xml" with the info, and that web page (web script) renders the xml to show the link and the description as a web page like hobbes.
I also like how Alfresco looks for sharing files, but it is an open source "Enterprise Content Management" tool that is not easy to use.

Ian, how easy or hard to use is the script you use at OS2Site (FilePage?) ? Is it something that you created customized for your use? or it is something public?

For the moment I will continue with the drivers, and some other tools on hobbes, but it is very slowly since I don't have any special access to improve the site.
