Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Hobbes (Files) Reoganization
« on: May 14, 2021, 05:38:59 pm »
Hi

I still have the "itchiness" to reorganize some files in hobbes, and even also some other places like OS2site.
But I hold back, some people may not like reorganizing and renaming of the files, some other may tell me "do not bother on that", and it is also a huge task.

Also there have been no reply from the hobbes administrator on my offer to help and have a quicker access to modify file descriptions of the database and been able to move files to the corresponding directory.

And also, it is big job to try organize all the OS/2 software available. From one side I think it is good to keep all the versions of the software, but from the other side I understand that some sites (like hobbes) should only have the latest version (with the exception of drivers). Times has change and storage space is not problem for OS/2 programs like it was on the past. (like my crazy OHFOWG and the OS2World Github (7GB) )

My concern with OS/2 preservation had been growing when I saw how old software disappears from the internet (some can not be found even on the waybackmachine). I don't want to delete anything. I hopefully will like to backup the old things with the old names in different archive.org items and later focus in the working apps, latest versions and renaming and moving the files.

What do you think?

- Should I try to make my own public file repository? If I try that I will need help, I don't want more server administration with that.
- Should I keep trying to improve hobbes order in this slow way of uploading files with .txt template file?
- Should I take care that "itchiness" with some other thing and forget this thing?

Ian, (he runs the os2site), your opinion is important for me.

I also want to do something collaborative with the help of several people since it is a big task.

Regards

Hi
I checked the link/file using online totalvirus and he found nothing.
The virus was found under my windows system protected by licenced Avast tool and firefox avast plug-in.
Yes, Windows and even the latest Firefox for Windows are detecting some OS/2 files and .cmd files as virus. All xcenter widgets are detected as virus while they are not.

Thanks for the link Wim.

Remy, can you let me know which virus is detecting and with which AV? ClamAV?

I had tried the installer on my ArcaOS VM and it searchs for a valid eComStation license. But the files looks ok with me.

... stay well away from the OS4 kernel as its legality is questionable and Arca Noae doesn't want to upset IBM.
Hi Dave

For me, to stop questioning the legality of OS4 Kernel, I'm using the US copyright law section 107.
If you are using OS4 for non-profit research or education it is under fair use.

For further discussion on this subject, let's open different thread.

Hi Charles

Now I get you are using Warp 3 with no fixpacks.  Since you are back with VGA support and no trap error I guess you know need to get a decent resolution on your Warp 3 box.

I'm guessing yours is a hobbie machine and it is not an vital machine used on some industry. Otherwise it is very important to backup the full HDD image, just in case.

I would also vote to get "snap-os2-3.1.8.zip" (Latest freeware) - (or even sdd7_b38.zip - older) installed there but the "no fixpacks" in Warp 3 may be an issue.

If I don't recall it wrong the latest US Warp 3 fixpacks is Fixpack 40. ... I don't recall if FP43 was only for Warp 4 Server. I also have this quick article on how to install those IBM fixpacks from the HDD.

Hi Charles. Welcome to the forum.

Can you give us a little description of the machine where OS/2 is running?
- Which version of OS/2 are you running 2.0 or Warp 3 (You can execute a "ver /r" on the command line).
- What software is the one that is critical on that OS/2 system?
- Does the computer has some special hardware that needs to be supported?

Maybe with that we can give you a better idea which driver to use and if it is possible to easily go the Warp 4.52 or even ArcaOS if you want to acquire it.

Hi

I want to see if I can try eThemes on ArcaOS.

I can not find the "eThemes125b.zip"
http://web.archive.org/web/20071117013718/http://os2ecs.org/ethemes.html

Jeramie told me it is ok with that being freeware and I want to try to see if I can install it on ArcaOS.

Hi Ibrahim.
If anybody may be interested, I am willing to start a bounty for a well-rounded release of QEMU...

I support your bounty idea. In my experience I think it will be better to find the developer first, know how much he is asking for the service and then push to get the funds.

I am just a fan of qemu and just recently bought ArcaOS for myself.

Welcome to the OS2World forum !! Welcome to the OS/2 Community !!!
I get very happy to get new people around  ;D

Hi Kumar, welcome to the forum.

I'm Martin Iturbide, the moderator of this forum and OS2World newsmaster.

eComStation seems to be no longer maintained, we haven't hear any news from that product and company since 2014. Today the OS/2 community is using a different OS/2 OEM OS called ArcaOS (Based in OS/2 Warp 4.52). ArcaOS is being actively developed and it is being sold to individuals and corporations that has the need to use OS/2 on modern machines. I would suggest you to contact Lewis Rosenthal from Arca Noae (company that created ArcaOS) and talk with him about the industrial necessity for OS/2 and serial multi port pci cards for industrial use under this OS.

My opinions are from a community point of view, and on this case, it is not commercial. I would prefer an open source driver for the modern PCI-e Multiport serial adapter and it possible can be spin off from some other open source drivers. I would love to have some reports that the Axxon multiport modern PCI-e serial adapter works on ArcaOS, but I think it will depend on the demand that you may get with this platform. Anyway, if you need any information about the platform we can help you here, as long as our time and knowledge are able to.

General Discussion / Re: Installing eCS on a EEEPC 701 with USB
« on: May 05, 2021, 08:22:20 pm »
Hi Jacopo Del Vivo, welcome to the OS2World forum.

For what I know, I never know about a procedure to install eCS (eComStation) from an USB Flash drive. On those days, it was always needed a DVD drive to install the OS. There were some other technique to clone the HDD image from an installed machine to other one.

Today, I use ArcaOS 5.0.6 and I install it from a USB flash drive, since that OEM version of OS/2 has formal support for it.

I never installed eCS from an USB flash drive, I don't have much experience with Rufus. I don't even remember correctly if the latest version of eCS, 2.2 beta II, (December 2013) was able to boot from an USB DVD drive. Also, we haven't get any news about eComStation and its company since 2014.

If someone else has some experience, please let us know.

Hi

I'm also trying "ALWALTFX" for the fun of it. I'm also having problem understand what some of feature does, like "Key enhance". I will look for some documentation.

If someone else want to jump in with his favorite desktop enhancement and what consider it is the best feature, just jump it. There is not right or wrong answers, since "desktop enhancement" sometimes is a personal taste thing :)

Hi

I'm sure if it installed correctly. I was able to see the "drives" page enhanced with the icons on the window (the toolbar). But the rexx gadgets are not working.

Anyways it is interesting. I found that some things of wps-wizard can be good to reuse in some project to improve the WPS.

Hi

"cairo146.dll" on the sys/dll directory did the trick to let me install wps-wizard. I'm rebooting now to see if it worked.

Hi

I have Cairo 1.12.18 installed from the rpm. (cairo2.dll, cairos2.dll).
I noticed that WPSWIZZ.DLL asks for "cairo146.dll"  (using pmdll). I will check if I can find it from some old cairo package.
