Hardware / ArcaOS - Audio Equipment video
« on: April 13, 2021, 02:58:38 pm »
Hi

I found this video from "Sergey Glazunov". (ArcaOS (OS/4 - kernel, HPET support) Audioinstrument)
It uses ArcaOS for some Audio equipment, but I don't understand, if it is only playback, or if it has some special hardware working with ArcaOS or some specific software I may not know.

I'm not an "audio aficionado", I don't know much about this subject, any basic explanation is welcome too.

Hi Eugene.

I have some issue shipping things from Ecuador, since the local postal company is into bankruptcy, I will check some other options.

But so far no joy with getting a wide screen resolution.

Hi Neil

I have some VirtualBox notes here: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/ArcaOS_5.0.x_as_a_VirtualBox_6.x_Guest#Video

Which is your VirtualBox host?  In Windows 10 I had tried this command to get a higher resolution on the ArcaOS guest and worked.
"C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" setextradata "ArcaOS 5.0.3 (Name of the VM)" "CustomVideoMode1" "1920x1080x32"

Hi

I spend some time trying to find more information on the Internet and Archive.org, but I could not find anything related to version 2.0. There is version 4, 5 and even 6, but nothing about the fixpacks for V2.

I never knew much about this product, I know that IBM discontinued the OS/2 version on some point of time and later IBM sold the IBM VASmallTalk package to a different company (2005?) to keep developing the Windows version. (VAST Platform

There is also some general information about the product here: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/VisualAge_Smalltalk

My suggestion/idea on this case would be try to open the VASmallTalk V2.0 project on VASmallTalk V4 or V5 and see if it is compatible and if it compiles.

Hi Dirk, welcome to the forum.

ArcaOS uses often the same components than Warp 4.52, so compatibility with other OS/2 versions is rarely an issue.

Can you please post more information of what errors are showing on the screen? Maybe you can take some screenshots and upload it here.

Also, I can see that VASmalltalk for OS/2 newer versions were available (V5, V6?), I don't know if you want to give it a try to that version, or you specifically need V2 ? I also do not have experience installed VASmallTalk, I don't know about the compatibility of different versions of it.

OS2 Site has also some evaluation versions: http://www.os2site.com/sw/dev/smalltalk/index.html. Maybe you can try some different versions on VMs.

On the other hand it will be important to try to preserve the fixpacks files for this software just in case, If someone has a link or the files let us know.

Hi Kim

If you need some space and you want to some of your OS/2 stuff to get a home, go ahead an put it on ebay.

I usually want everything  ;D but I don't want more stuff at home. I have enough with some OS/2 Boxes and my Def Leppard collection. I want to collect digital things now, so it does not take more space  ;D ;D

Hi jailbird.

I'm also running Virtualbox at 1920x1080 with 16 M colors. VirtualBox 6.1.18 W10 host. ArcaOS 5.0.6 on the guest. I do not experience any mouse lag that make it hard to use on that resolution. I can not try any higher resolutions with the hardware that I have.

I'm using this gengradd.dll
Quote
8-15-20 11:14a        66,100      0 a---  gengradd.dll

I also have 'SET C1=GENGRADD,SBFILTER' on the config.sys.

I had also set 128MB of video memory on the guest VM, but I'm not sure if that makes any difference.

Hi

I did a very quick search of the last year of that magazine (2001) and linked some of the articles as a general idea.
Here it is: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/MC_Microcomputer.

resurrecting an old thread - I updated lsusb to the latest source.... https://smedley.id.au/tmp/lsusb-013.zip

Thanks Paul. It is working fine here.

Just a little question about the discussion, it is usb.ids hardcoded to "\mptn\etc" path ? or it is set with "SET ETC=" ?.
I'm complete fine that usb.ids goes into the "SET ETC="  path.

Hi Mentore

It is awesome that this magazine has the issues available online. I will make a post on the wiki about it. If you remember the issue where you articles are, (or any other OS/2 related article), please post it here. I will be checking some of the issues for some OS/2 articles.

I don't know if we can republish it though, so the best I can do is link it here:
For the moment I will only link them. About your articles, did you remember if you sign any exclusivity to the magazine? Otherwise you can also give permission to republish your on the OS2World wiki.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / PC Magazine OS/2 related articles
« on: April 01, 2021, 08:22:54 pm »
Hi

You may know that on my free time I like to organize the OS2World wiki, and try to link as much as OS/2 related material (let say it helps me with my anxiety these days).

I want to try to list and link all the PC Magazine OS/2 related article:
- The general OS/2 subject articles here (OS2World wiki) (software reviews, OS reviews, critic, etc)
- The development OS/2 related articles here (EDM/2 wiki)

The good thing is that is seems that Google books got permission to republish some the PC Magazine issues and we can found them online: Google Books.

I'm now requesting your help, if you find some OS/2 article on PC Magazine, let me know the name or issue or date, and I will include it to the wiki list.

BTW: I know PC Magazine was not our preferred Magazine at that time, but I just want to list the OS/2 articles.

Also, if you think we should do the same thing with other magazines (list its OS/2 related articles), let me know.

Regards
