Programming / Re: VSLICK - OS/2 Toolkit Support Package
« on: September 26, 2021, 03:47:56 pm »
Yes, that's it exactly. I ought to go back to my vslick notes and see what I did to make it function like an IDE. I was using CSet++ as my compiler then, and all I did was write some .cmd files for vslick to execute.

I didn't know where to search, but I found a few in this thread, and this is a post containing a very light scheme. That said, I now realize that I like the default scheme pretty well. So don't go out of your way to get a white theme just for me.

I'd like to see a light theme to go with the dark theme.

I used to use vslick as my IDE, but it required some customization and it was never as good as Visual Studio. I used to configure a Windows machine to edit files in my OS/2 project in Visual Studio for analysis of a large project, then use vslick for coding, debugging, etc.

Now I mainly use gcc, so I'm interested in making that nicer.

Applications / Re: Running old OS/2 Software - Issues
« on: September 14, 2021, 03:30:19 pm »
I think any software from 1992 is 16-bit. Now it ought to run, but two things happened to Presentation Manager since 1992. First, the PMMERGE. I don't remember what the two libraries were that merged, but likely the software is linked against the old libraries. Running in the debugger might help.

The second change was between Warp 3 and Warp 4. I think changes made you initialize a PM program differently. It's a minor change, but without, there might well be a crash in PMMERGE. That's still a change that might be monitored in the debugger.

Setup & Installation / Re: CUPS printing - filter deployment how to?
« on: September 10, 2021, 03:33:16 pm »
If your cups installation is similar enough to the one used in ArcaOS, can you use PRINTMAN to set things up? In 5.0.6, the HL-5470DW isn't listed, but you installed -exp, so maybe it's already there.

Events / Warpstock 2021 - Call for presentations
« on: August 07, 2021, 03:29:09 pm »
I am writing to invite you to present at Warpstock 2021. Presentations can be live from your location or you can submit a video and take questions from the audience.

If you are willing to prepare a presentation for Warpstock 2021, please let me know as soon as possible by writing to presenters@warpstock.org. Your presentation will help us make Warpstock 2021 a success.

I will want a presentation title, a short description to put on the website. If this is the first time presenting at Warpstock, I will also want a one-paragraph bio.

Your live input can come to us via most of the popular streaming services (Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, etc.). Please let us know in advance so that we may be prepared to receive your broadcast.

Your pre-recorded sessions may be in any the following formats: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, .webm.

Slides are not required, but if you use them, please send us your session slides in PDF or OpenOffice Impress format.

Be prepared for a brief (15-20 minute) technical run-through 7-10 days before the event, at an agreed upon time and date. (You do not need to have your slides prepared for the run-through.)

Hardware / Re: DOS Window Woes
« on: July 21, 2021, 04:20:57 pm »
For people trying to help Kevin get DOS Window to work, here is the URL of the computer

http://www.blondeguy.com/computer/quebopeep.html

Normally DOS Full Screen would work on this computer. But I am not a DOS user, so I have little to contribute beyond what Arca Noae gives me.

The DOS compatibility will improve in ArcaOS 5.1. The improvement will not easily install on ArcaOS 5.0. If you are a DOS user, you have something to look forward to.

Of the suggestions seen so far, I like installing an old (poster says 10 years old, but I think he meant 20) ATI card. This computer is the last one to have PCI bus, so an old video card is a possibility.

If this can be solved by better DOS settings, then I'd like to see that.

Destroyed calc diagrams can be saved as .XLS and they remain intact.

Interesting observation.

On the other hand one reason why I'm using AOO is to circumvent proprietary formats made by MS.

This bug is on several platforms and apparently will be fixed in the next release:

Bitwise works has raise from "44880 €" on 2021-06-06 to "46045 €" at 2021-07-07. The goal is 49000 € and I think we are getting close to it.

I donated again. But Bitwise is now part-time for this project. This is a major factor in the practicality of using ArcaOS in a day to day way. The platform would be healthier if we could fund BWW at a full-time rate.

297
This is semantics, of course. Sure the printer will print something with just about any postscript driver. But with CUPS, there are several thousand printers listed in the menu, and the HL-5470DW is not present. Further, if the printer is listed in openprinting.org, we are probably a recompile away from having it on the menu.

298
The HL-5470DW isn't a supported model in ArcaOS 5.0.6. When I bought an unsupported HP printer, I asked the BitWise people to update the port of HPLIP, and it is now a supported printer. The same may be true for this Brother model.

It would be nice if we had a printer program to query the local subnet, get the model number and automatically install the driver and configure a printer object.

You can get the PPD file and add support manually, or if you don't care about all the printer features, you can use some other BRScript driver and get pretty good printing support.

Setup & Installation / Re: OS/2 installation on IBM T43 (intel based)
« on: July 04, 2021, 06:29:57 am »
As pointed out earlier in the thread, you have a 1xxx model T43 (it's confusing having two such different laptops both called a T43)

OS/2 Warp 4 will install just fine on either one. Although SNAP says it supports the chipset, it does not work well. Panorama will work well on your laptop. If you know how to install OS/2 and it's drivers, you'll be fine.

Blonde Guy sold dozens of T43 2xxx, and one T43 1xxx, all running eComStation. I haven't had one for years.

If you are trying to learn OS/2, and you want to do it the hardest possible way, avoid ArcaOS and eCS and continue to try with the T43. There is a lot to be said for doing things the hard way. You will learn a lot. Good luck to you, whichever you choose.

I notice you never answered this question from Roderick:

When the system has hung, does it respond to CTRL ALT F10 twice

I remember it as Ctrl-Alt-Num Lock twice.

It's supposed to start a system dump.
