Title: Firefox 38.8.0 for OS/2 Beta 7
Post by: Joop on May 28, 2016, 08:34:09 pm
Where to go for download?
And I don't want to start a war or so, but I do read unbelievable bullshit about installing needed libs. He really doesn't understand a thing about the power of OS/2.
All needed libs are in [drive:]\ecs\dll. Its in the config.sys, nothing changes there. Just copy the stuff in this lib. Only fontconfig path is different. How hard is it just to do it this way, I don't need a program which fucks up my system. If I want Linux that badly I go for such a system. So I want to install it my way, in this way no installation is standard, best way to keep it virus free. The trouble of Windows and Linux (Mac) is that everyone has the same layout when it comes to lib files, the best recipe for planting a virus in the system. So if you  want that, dream on..

Hi Joop.

https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/releases/tag/FIREFOX_38_8_0esr_RELEASE_OS2_Beta_7 (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/releases/tag/FIREFOX_38_8_0esr_RELEASE_OS2_Beta_7)

Hint to others, if you get error messages re file errors, missing files, or corrupt DLL's and you have already installed the required library's. Try backing up your previous FF 38.x.x and unzip the new zip file over the top of it. That fixed the DLL error messages for me. 38.8 is working well here so far.

Install the libc066 & gcc4core, fontconfig and cairo/pango/icu files from Steve's site at  http://os2news.warpstock.org/Warpzilla.html (http://os2news.warpstock.org/Warpzilla.html)

Until now I've always unzipped firefox*.zip after renaming my old firefox directory.
The latest firefox zip seems to be missing some DLL's that shipped with previous versions.
Using the previous version of Firefox's DLL's appears to work with no errors at all.

Installed 38.8. Its coming up. But I have to tweak it a little so it understands that the preferred language is Dutch, but getting the necessary plug ins I get this

Unexpected response from server

Firefox doesn't know how to communicate with the server.

Check to make sure your system has the Personal Security Manager installed.
This might be due to a non-standard configuration on the server.

End of try. I have all up and running, have no server, installed too much libs?

I would never suggest to go this way.  Third part dlls have to reside in proper place = %UNIXROOT%\usr\lib\  but not in FireFox dir.

this is a list of dlls supplied with 38.2.1:
freebl3.dll
mozalloc.dll
mozsqlt3.dll
nspr4.dll
nss3.dll
nssckbi.dll
nssdbm3.dll
nssutil3.dll
plc4.dll
plds4.dll
smime3.dll
softokn3.dll
ssl3.dll
xul.dll

this is a list supplied with 38.8.0 :
mozalloc.dll
mozsqlt3.dll
xul.dll

The rest have gone to  %UNIXROOT%\usr\lib\

By coping new ver of FF over old  you force  FF to use dlls supplied with old ver - what is  completely wrong.

How are you going to know that you are using proper ver of dlls ?

Right scenario is:
1) update/install dlls according to FF README, using ANPM or YUM
2)
.. unzip firefox*.zip after renaming my old firefox directory.

It should work fine with the nspr and nss supplied with FF38.2.1 (or whatever the last release was) or perhaps the ones with my last SM.
Now when (and if) FF 45 comes out...

No, get same error, can't go to www.google.nl or can't go to add on's. Same error as above. Installed all nspr and nss files. Also the readme contains filenames which can't be found on the download site. So how can a package find them, it needs to have a list to act from.

OK, thanks for testing. I guess then it'll need the same version of the nss libraries as it was linked against, which would mean unrpming the rpms if zips aren't available. Note that other programs such as the new VirtualBox port (I think) will also need nss and nsprpub.
It's interesting that a Netscape era error message is still lurking in the code.

I will point out that it took a couple of minutes, using Arca Noae Package Manager, to get this right, and I used my latest WarpIn installer (at Netlabs, and Hobbes) to get Firefox 38.8.0 properly installed. The WarpIn installer no longer makes any attempt to verify that the user has the proper DLLs (and other things) installed. ANPM (recommended), or the YUM command line, will do that properly. Trying to do it yourself is probably possible, but I suspect that it will turn into an exercise in frustration, before you figure it out. It seems that even the developers don't know what you need.

FWIW, I installed FF 38.8.0 last night, and it seems to be working well. The only anomaly, that I have noticed, is that it insists that I haven't used FF for a while, it welcomes me back, and it offers to clean up Firefox. I haven't let it do that, yet.

Thanks Dave, couldn't find a package for unrpming. I do have more bugs, but I'm not sure if this has to do with libs which aren't the right version or which are missing. But I don't get any errors at startup. Yet it can't call a page. This frightens me, mallware can find its way without warning. Hopefully OS/2 will shut the program down when something is started at the background and is not known by OS/2.

In several occasions with early eComstation installations all rpm installations failed with at the end a chaos on the computer. No thanks, may be I will install rpm when Blue Lion (or whatever they will call it) comes out in my native language, but that will be no sooner than somewhere in 2017. They make the same mistake as with eComstation, when other language packs are coming out they are behind compared to the native English one, which will lead to differences in what you can do at programming level.

Apparently 7ZIP will do it, but I seem to recall that it takes two passes.

That is why you should get, and use, Arca Noae Package Manager (and avoid the experimental repository). It cannot compensate for poor RPM/YUM packaging (which happens far too often), but it almost always stops before any damage can be done.

That is not necessarily a "mistake". It is the reality that there just aren't enough people to do the job. The English version appears first, simply because that is the language that is already done during development. It takes some time for other languages to be done, and verified, before they can be released. It is not an ideal situation, but I don't know of any good way to speed up the process.

Recent releases of the Archive Viewer, including the one that comes with eCS2.2beta2 (or get the latest from Alex's site) will open RPMs.
As for malware, most is compiled or at least expects Windows and won't get very far on OS/2.
Now a days the real danger is from JavaScript malware leveraging security holes in the browser, which is why it is important to use the latest possible. Things like one tab spying on a neighbouring tab to get passwords and such is a possibility. I recommend using NoScript or at least an ad blocker as most of the malicious code is in third party ads and can be on any page.
Then there is trickery used to get you to go to a malicious page. Today I noticed 3 messages in 3 mailing lists trying to get users to go to various (very likely malicious) pages. Seems Blonde Guys password leaked out  :(

Using an ad and malware blocking "hosts" file is quite useful, and free.
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm (http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm) has the info. The file, which is plain text, is at http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.zip (http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.zip)
Just rename "x:\mptn\etc\hosts" to "hosts.bak" or such, where "x" is your boot partition, and unzip the downloaded file in the same directory. It makes for a much calmer and safer browsing experience.

If you have added any lines to your hosts file you will have to add them to the replacement file. Most have never touched the file and need do nothing.

Thanks Dave, couldn't find a package for unrpming.

Use the Archive Viewer supplied with eCS - or the latest version http://www.altsan.org/programming/os2/#arcview

In ecs22b2 only the first start show this message:
Flash Plugin!
NSPR4.DLL not found....
The second start is all ok.

In ecs2.0, in all cases show that message error. Only if copy the unixroot\usr\lib\nspr4.dll to firefox folder solve the problem.

Also for me it was fine installing with ANPM and the wpi-file I found at Hobbes. It took also only a few minutes.
To get rid of the annoying statement just delete the parent.lock file in your profile once the program is closed.

Perhaps Flash remembers where it found NSPR previously or it's hard coded to look for it in the program directory. If on the second run it works...
Understand that Flash is no longer supported and buggy when used with the recent Mozilla releases so it is suggested to uninstall it.

That did the trick thanks ! I had flash installed in a separate firefox installed, but got away from that.

Used ANPM to update and install the required libraries...
It worked out nicely, though the repository seem to have switched from libstdc++6 for 386 to 686 so it complained about that.

I have a working copy of OpenOffice 4.1.2 on the same machine, where all the extra libraries has been removed and use the libraries managed by ANPM. It has worked flawlessly since the .dll cleanout.

ANPM removed icuuc42.dll so OpenOffice doesn't work anymore, though Firefox work like a charm. :-)
Had to find some old package and dig out (wic -x ...wpi) to get the files and put the in the OpenOffice program folder as in the past. Do I have to add more files back later if I upgrade/add more applications later on?

i386 has been depreciated. Too many programs need instructions (for atomic operations) that are only available on i486 or newer and i686 seems like a good minimum requirement

I have it all, only I do have the file NSSUTIL3.DLL. Can't find NSS3UTIL.DLL,  so I guess its a typo?
But still no go, error message stays. Also in options security is not available. Can't go to the net. I have may homepage local, so with open file that works. Had also a short movie, still stutter in sound.

Thanks, but the message didn't landed. You wrote "NSS3UTIL.DLL", that file doesn't exist. I do have the file "NSSUTIL3.DLL", the same as you send with the message. But even with all the files it doesn't work. I'm afraid that the Linux directory setup is hard coded in the program.

Today I had a program which wants to install the file "charset.alias" in the \usr\lib directory. Only this file had only a header and was empty. The one existing in my directory does have much more lines and contents. This is exactly what holds me back to use this system of Linux. Its similar like the dll hell with Windows and sometimes even with OS/2. This time it was easy, the file is readable, but binary ones, which one? IBM learned us if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Ideally only RPM/YUM should touch any files in @UNIXROOT and we're lucky to only have one repository and can mostly avoid rpmhell (conflicting rpms from different sources).
There's still problems like glib2 currently missing charset.alias, http://trac.netlabs.org/rpm/ticket/181#ticket (http://trac.netlabs.org/rpm/ticket/181#ticket)
What really gets me is that RPM seems fragile. I have 2 installs of it and they're both subtly broken with some programs that won't update. I also think that the maintainers have taken the splitting of packages too far. While some programs need to be DLLs for various reasons, we have way too many which makes having conflicting DLLs more likely. Doesn't help having the 8.3 DLL name limit either.

It also doesn't help that there is no way of identifying which is the latest - no syslevel information for instance.  Plus there is the possibility of older programs not working with the newer versions of the DLLs.

Post by: Doug Clark on June 18, 2016, 09:08:48 pm
This DLL stuff is an awful mess. It appears to be well nigh impossible to get the correct DLLs installed for Firefox.

I have:

1) used Doug B *.wpi to install firefox 38.8.0.  (also tried this using the *.zip file - same results)
2) I also used ANPM to install the libraries/packages listed in the README.OS2 file.
3) I was still missing a significant number of DLLs . I found most of the missing from a downloaded version of firefox 32 I believe - as was suggested on this forum.
4) Used moz_support-2016-05-10.zip for icuin.dll
5) The fontconf package ( which it appears ANPM does't install or know about) came from  fontconfig-2-11_95-1_oc00.zip. I unziped it to its own directory and then manually copied the files from the various subdirectories to my c:\ which is what @unixroot is set to.

Suggestion to whomever made up the fontconfig*.zip file : please don't zip the files with the top directory as "@unixroot" because that makes it impossible to directly unzip into the proper drive and directory.

Now firefox starts but I cannot access Google (or any other HTTPS link) because of a message "Firefox doesn't know how to communicate with the server.   Check to make sure your system has the Personal Security Manager installed."

The back button doesn't work.

When I right click on a link and select "Open in a new tab" or "Open in a new window" nothing happens.

So I am guessing I still have some DLL version issues or missing DLLs since I don't see anyone else with these problems here or on the bug tracker site.

So my suggestion is to:

Include ALL required DLLs and other required packages in the Firefox.zip file, or Firefox.wpi file and configure the installation so they are all installed into the Firefox directory.

Yes that will make the install file much larger and take up more space but disk space is now very cheap.

I have spent probably 4 - 6 hours spread over multiple days trying to get FireFox 38 running. While I am no where close to the smartest guy in the room I am capable of using ANPM, WarpIn, and unzipping stuff and I still can't get it running correctly - meaning to the same level of function as you guys are reporting.

I very much appreciate all the work that has been put into porting FireFox, and the other Unix based programs to OS/2. I think it is great that so much unix based open source stuff is getting ported to OS/2. But the reality of the complexity of the supporting packages and required DLLs is such that mere mortals cannot get the applications running. Or at least I can't.

[I am running ECS 2.2 beta which was installed on a clean disk about 1 year ago. I have not updated or installed SeaMonkey or Thunderbird other than what came with the normal ECS install.]

Sorry about the fontconfig package, it was a rushed upload. It's out of date now as well, though should still work. On my todo list is to build a standalone fontconfig that uses %ETC% instead of /etc.
Your error message points to missing the NSS libraries. Judging by your other comments, something is screwed up in your RPM/YUM install as following the directions in README.OS2 should work fine. Lots has changed since 2.2B2 was released and you might want to consider starting over with YUM/RPM.
As for including all the DLLs, in principle I agree with you but some of the DLLs have @UNIXROOT dependencies and while I maintain SM and TB, they're both dependent on the Bitwise Firefox code and they're making the decisions and are set in their ways.
I'm also stuck on dial-up so it's hard to upload stuff.

I have, see the first page of this post. I have much more time spend to get it working. There is much more not working, not all are due to porting. It still stutters with video, that's a problem within FF. So no option for me. Also filling the bug tracker is no option, the first thing I will get is if I had installed it through the stupid Unix system. No, I haven't because it doesn't work on an eCS 1.2Dutch system, proofed in our Dutch community. So if I want to use that stupid Unix system, then I have to wait on the new version of eCS. Second, if I have to use the Unix system you can ask yourself why still using OS/2-eCS or the Blue Lion. Third, I use Gimp, don't know what will happen because it does use a similar setup.
And again trouble with RPM/YUM. As wrote before, I think that a few directories are hard coded in the package. Not the OS/2-eCS way and its a security risk, all on the same place, doesn't matter which computer your target is.

Out of interest it appears the Ubuntu is moving over to Snap.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/14/universal_ubuntu_snap_packages/ (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/14/universal_ubuntu_snap_packages/)

Snap, originally developed for Ubuntu's mobile flavor of Linux, is a way of packaging an application with all the dependencies it needs to run in isolation.  In other words the OS/2 way.

Dave - Thank you for the NSS suggestion. I will try and reinstall the yum/rpm/anpm and see if I can resolve it that way.

I hope I didn't come across as critical - I was intending to make suggestions. I am i awe of your contributions and work for the OS/2 community. And I am in awe of the folks porting FireFox. I am truly amazed at how much has been done. Great job all of you.

Since I was bold enough to suggest, I guess I am obligated to volunteer to help and/or test.  So I do.

In my ideal world all of  firefox, main package and required packages, would  be installed with WarpIn - as Doug B. has done for the FF package itself (Thanks Doug B! ).  One of the big advantages it has over ANPM is WarpIn can unload DLLs in use - I ran into problems with ANPM using some DLLs that needed to be updated.  Or perhaps compile YUM/RPM/ANPM so that it uses its own set of DLLs, or compile so that it uses no DLLs, and build in the ability to unload DLLs in use - which is really needed anyway for an installer.

Anyway I want to make clear that I am grateful for all you guys' work.

@Joop, to use Gimp on an up to date OS/2 system, you will need to set up a cmd file that puts all the needed DLLs in BEGINLIBPATH and use LIBPATHSTRICT. This is a problem caused by EMX DLLs not being compatible with the rest of the system as OS/2 uses an underline prefix in symbols and EMX doesn't. Shouldn't be hard to do as I did it here. Luckily XFree/86 only needs UNIXROOT set for building.

@Ivan, Snap isolates libraries better then OS/2 is capable of, though we could get close with BEGINLIBPATH, LIBPATHSTRICT and changing PATH. We would still have problems with shared memory that doesn't exist on Linux.

@Doug, YUM/RPM is capable of updating locked DLLs though I noticed some recent fixes for this and just like Warpin, you may have to reboot to actually use the updated DLL. I think you may still have some RPM packages left that was installed along with eCS 2.2b2.
RPM is very fragile is hated everywhere but enterprise uses it and the folks driving development know it.

I will point out that ANPM uses RPM/YUM, but can do nothing that RPM/YUM won't do by the command line. RPM/YUM will update DLLs that are in use, but that may not take effect until the user reboots. It is known that RPM/YUM has many problems, but that is the method that was chosen to do updates for packages that originate in the Linux world.

There was a problem, some time ago, where RPM/YUM could not update itself. Please see: https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/anpm/non-updated-systems/ (https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/anpm/non-updated-systems/) for instructions to fix the problem.

Don't use XFree/86 to run Gimp.

Here's another installer for FF, TB, and SM.

I have updated YUM & ANPM and finally got the newer version of both to run. After the YUM URLGRABBER problem was fixed.

Now when I try to install libstdc++6  I get the following error in ANPM:

Test Transaction Errors:   package libstdc++6-4.9.2.1-3.oc00.i686 is already installed
file /@unixroot/usr/lib/stdcpp6.dll from install of libstdc++6-4.9.2.1-3.oc00.i686 conflicts with file from package libstdc++6-4.9.2.1-3.oc00.i386

Also the installation/update of fontconfig results in the message:

Error unpacking rpm package fontconfig-2.11.95.1.oc00.i686

And to add insult to injury FireFox38 now crashes when starting up in -console

DIVE is disabled - Panorama's shadow-buffer is enabled
Creating 006D_03.TRP

E:\PROGRAMS\FIREFOX38\FIREFOX.EXE

etc. etc.

So it appears I am worse off than before.

Can I move my unixroot to another drive, and which directories do I need to move?

Currently unixroot=c:\ in my config.sys
I am running out of space in my C: (boot) drive. Partition size of that drive is 2 GB because of DOS/Win3.1 considerations

Can I just change the setting of UNIXROOT=C:\    in config.sys
and move the directories
C:\VAR
C:\ETC
C:\USR

Will that work?

Yes, it should.

Thanks Dave for the zipper with must have stuff. Probably I forgot one, but I did copy all to the directory eCS\dll.  The nss stuff was already in the right place, same date same time. No nix directory stuff. Next you have to re-install all what you had added. First get the browser in my language. Next get the fonts right, tabpage kicked out in order to get my page space back. Have to install or renew the mm stuff, but a youtube film did play, only it stutters. Seems to be a problem in FF, not in porting. And finally its sees the world instead of only my computer system. All in all, its getting worse with FF if your mindset is somewhat different, your native is not English and your screen is still modest instead of some kind of digital wallpaper.

Had to install all the extensions again. I had copied them from a previous version. But after that FF keeps nagging at the bottom with all kinds of message for a fresh restart. Oh yeh, welcome back it said grmbl... Finally I did that and had to reinstall all from scratch. So, it might be handy to keep notes on what you did, like some sick person who programmed that FF keeps thumbnails from each screen. That directory is filling up like hell. The worst thing is that it is hidden and that you have to make a new Boolean for stopping it. What had they in mind with such behavior? If you want to stop this behavior you have to use "browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled" with value: true. Go to the page about:config. With the other mouse button you get a menu and choose from that menu  add. You get a question what, there you fill in "browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled" and next you get a screen with value, choose "true". Next you get a page with all "browser..." and you can control if your new added is between them. If so close screen.

If you want an other font or you want back your "real estate" in screen-size you have to install a few extensions.
I have these;
Exif Viewer version 2.00.1-signed.1-signed - I use this for checking on photo's on the net.
Locale Switcher version 3.1-signed.1-signed - I use this one for switching from English to Dutch in menu's et all
Tab Mix Plus version 0.5.0.0 - I use this to set single window browsing and hide tab-pages if you only have one. This give more room for pages.
Theme Font & Size Changer version 43.4 - I use this one to change to an other font in the menu's et all. Standard it is large and takes valuable space. With this you can choose for another font and font-size.
Nederlands (NL) Language Pack version 38.8.0 - I use this for the conversion to Dutch.

Have fun!

The "welcome back..." thing is a known bug fixed by deleting parent.lock in your profile. You should be able to find your old profile on your desktop, which is another bug on OS/2 as the desktop isn't the place to back up stuff to.

I deleted Tab Mix Plus version 0.5.0.0, from the log it shows not so compatible and give some error.
I found another extension:
Hide Tab Bar With One Tab version 1.5.1-signed.1-signed, this was the reason for Tab Mix Plus, this one does the same automatic.

I check my html pages with total validator. With FF 24.8.1 Beta 4 the result page from total validator is accepted and set to screen. With FF 38.8.0 Beta 7 I have problems. The page is not accepted and not set to screen. Get an error back from total validator that I have to shut down the browser and start over again. Is this behavior only with me or are there more users with same kind of problems?

I have a couple of systems where it "doesn't matter", so I did the cleanup, as offered. In fact, I think it did improve the operation, and nothing seems to have gone away. It does put the old stuff on the desktop, but I just deleted that. Now, I have done it on my main system, and that is okay too.

MAKE a BACKUP first, but it may be worth doing the cleanup.

YMMV
