Create a testlog of this system and upload it.

What is the make and model of your system. Having more information will be helpfull.
It seems DOS windows is not the issue, but rather the the VDM support is broken.
Starting WIN/OS2 full screen will also hang the system.

Changing the video driver will most likely not help.
If you have the line ACPI.PSD in your conrfig.sys try starting with ACPI.PSD /MAXCPU=1 and try again.

But this rather sounds like VDM code running in into trouble either by the CSM layer in your BIOS or the video card BIOS code screwing up.
Because that is what VSVGA.SYS depends on.

Roderick Klein

Thanks for the reply and assistance. Attached is the testlog for the system.

I tried the /MAXCPU=1 and it did not change anything except for the number of processors that I could tell.

The system has "integrated graphics" and does state what type of chipset it is. Panorama tab does not report any VESA info, card name nor card vendor.

I tried the DOS = HIGH,NOUMB. Opening a DOS Windows session was still the same, but it did allow me to open a full screen DOS session and I could ALT-HOME to windows, but something was really pegging the CPU and the system was very slow. I will try to toy around with it more this weekend.

Thanks for documenting that Martin, having all the possible solutions in one place is very handy.

I have not tried the OS=HIGH,NOUMB option, I will try that this evening and see how things go.

I can open a full screen DOS window and it shows the command prompt, but any keystroke exits the session and goes back to WPS.

Stating up front, I have already done the /int10grfxsafe thing, MODE C80, etc I even installed a VIOP10.WPI that someone referenced somewhere else.

The issue is with DOS windows. I had a issue previously on a different computer and the above did fix that. But this is on a Lenovo Desktop (Blondeguy machine).

This issue is different from the issue i had on the other computer.

Now the DOS window opens, it shows text changing in the first 2 columns of the window and after 20-30 seconds the OS locks up.

Attached is an image of what the top left of the window looks like, characters seem to scroll across the 2 character area, but it doesn't look like it is a continuous stream.

I've been dealing with this issue for awhile. The computer runs my BBS and the only thing I can't do is run BBS doors since most are all DOS. Just wish I could figure it out and maybe play some LORD or USURPER again :P

And it's "just a balloon with sand in it" for $99? LOL

I did see they relisted that OS/2 watch for $.99, but still have really high shipping on it.

I saw a photo of that watch awhile back and always wanted to get one. I have a ebay search for it, not sure why this didn't show up on it. Anyway, I'd buy it, but that $40 bid price + $18 shipping (USD) is a bit much for me at this time. :(

Setup & Installation / Re: Partitioning Recommendations

Thanks everyone for the replies! I do appreciate the input. I've never used DFSee before, that looks like a useful program.

I am doing an install now to test the system and see how it works. Then I will finalize how do to the partitions and re-install.

Setup & Installation / Partitioning Recommendations
« on: December 14, 2019, 01:39:00 am »
Hi,

I currently have ArcaOS running on an HP desktop with 500gb drive partitioned 100gb C drive, 400gb D drive. The C partition is the boot partition along with programs. And the D partition dedicated to my BBS, all related programs and data is stored on the D drive.

I recently found a 64gb SATA SSD that I had laying around since it was useless for any current windows install. And it (finally) dawned on me that I might could use it for ArcaOS. So, I have a HP desktop exactly the same as the one I am currently using, except it currently has a 1tb drive in it. My plan is to replace the 1tb drive with the 64gb SSD and a 500gb HD. If I can get that working smoothly, then I'll move the BBS over to the new system.

As for partitioning, I am looking for input. I plan to use a scheme similar to one of those found on https://88watts.net/disklayout.html . I like the idea of having a dedicated boot partition and program partition. And then adding another partition for the BBS, which would need to be D: so I don't have to change all my configs for the assorted BBS programs.

Some questions:

The website recommends a 2gb boot partition, which I am sure would be enough, but with the amount of drive space available, I figured I could up that just a bit for extra room. But still staying under 10gb. Should I stay at 2gb or does it really matter?

How do I setup a maintenance partition, do I just do another install on that partition? Never done anything like that but it sounds like it could be a life saver.

My initial thoughts are as follows:
8gb HPFS Boot (main)
2gb HPFS Boot (maintenance)
54gb JFS "E" (OS2 Program Drive)

And then the 500gb HD setup as "D" for the BBS and related files.

Open to thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks!

Applications / Re: Recommendations: File Managers?

Thanks everyone for the replies and recommendations. I've decided to install the all of them and just try them out, figure out which one suits me best and go with that.

Applications / Recommendations: File Managers?
« on: June 14, 2017, 08:56:28 pm »
I was looking around for different file managers for OS/2 and figured I'd ask here to see what others recommend.

I've used FC/2 in the past and I seem to remember others were out there, but I can't remember any of them.

What do you use? What's still being supported (if any)?.

Sooo...for some reason I can't go directly to that window mode, but can get there in a round-about sort of a way.

That is interesting. I never tried to do that.

90% of my DOS sessions are related to a my BBS, so it would mainly be door games. I could have set them up to run full screen I guess. Glad the fix worked for me though.

Thanks Dave, I should have checked there first, I was looking in the OS2 directory :P

I did try this and now the dos session will open, but it doesn't display anything. I know it is working because I can type in exit and it closes. So, the session is opening and operates, but there is no display.

I'll mess with it some more and see if I can figure anything out.

** edit - I did get it to work, I had put the mode co80 command, but at the start of the autoexec.bat and it wasn't working. Putting it at the end did work.

This is an old problem. I think there is a section in the README that addresses the problem.

Thanks Doug and everyone else! Which README file should I be finding this in?

Applications / Problems with Windowed DOS sessions
« on: June 11, 2017, 02:36:26 am »
I originally posted this in the Hardware section, but it looks like it might not be hardware after all.

I am testing Arca on a newish HP desktop computer and everything pretty much works fine. Except when I try to open a windowed DOS session, I get a pop message stating "the system does not support this session's video mode in a window".

The Arca installed the Panorama driver, the monitor is a AOC brand running 1680 x 1050. OS/2 prompt windows work fine. And the system has no other issues that I can tell. I just can't run DOS sessions in a window. They do open fine full screen.

*update* - I have reinstalled with each of the 4 video driver packages and I have the same issue with all of them, so I don't think it's a video driver related issue.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Kev
