Networking / Re: Samba Users and Groups
« on: January 15, 2024, 02:06:08 am »
When I install samba, it makes some beeping noises. I now believe these noises signify the creation of exceptq Trap files. If I run smbpasswd.exe, it frequenly traps. Occasionally it works. I believe this is why it is difficult to get a set of working users and groups, which Samba needs to do its work.

ArcaOS sees 1.4 GB of RAM while there ar 57GB for the RAM Disk available.

This is the lowest amount of RAM I have seen yet. Every generation has less than the one before it. It would be interesting how Dooble will function on this system.

I tested a Lenovo X13 laptop with a Ryzen 5 Pro 6650U CPU and got 1840.50 MiB

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: USB to Parallel
« on: January 13, 2024, 03:39:19 pm »
This USB to parallel adapter works with OS/2.

The others don't have OS/2 support, but may work. I have no idea how to get one of these. I'd try eBay.

Setup & Installation / Re: getting chkdsk fix errors on C (Vm Virtualbox)
« on: January 13, 2024, 03:22:28 pm »
Make a copy of the VDI using the host operating system.
Add the copy to your Virtual Machine
OS/2 will mount the 2nd C: drive, but LVM will assign another drive letter.
Chkdsk the second drive using the assigned letter.

Could Cloudfare be preventing realclimatescience.com as a scam? It's name looks too similar to realclimate.org, which is an award-winning climate website. If you are selling a sweetened soda, you cannot call it Coca-Cola-Drink.

https://www.cloudflare.com/ does display, even on Firefox 45, which seems odd. Why would they display their own website, but not that of a paying customer?

Cloudfare's web page says they protect against threats, and a websites with a fake names are a legitimate threat. Not that the realclimatescience.com website is a threat. It's just an opinion website. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. The name of the website does seem a bit questionable.

Incidentally, realclimate.org does not display on Dooble or on Firefox45. Cloudfare does not seem to be involved.

Programming / Re: Installing VisualAge 4 on ArcaOS 5.x
« on: January 05, 2024, 03:23:43 pm »
I converted almost all of the Feature Installer products to simple REXX command line installs. But not, apparently, this one. I think there is more going on here than simple Feature Installer. I remember getting it installed on eCS, but I didn't like it, so I guess I never tried on ArcaOS.

Feature Installer has clifi, which allows command line install on most apps.

It's hard to make backup to a FAT32 drive work. The same drive with JFS will be stable.

It now remembers history here. That's a nice enhancement.
I find it doesn't really render more websites than Firefox, but I think that's because over years of using Firefox 45, I stopped visiting sites that don't render. Still, it's pretty disappointing that so few websites work.

I have both editions, but there is little difference between them. I found it an easy way to learn a lot about writing OS/2 programs. After reading "Real World Programming for OS/2 2.1", the toolkit documentation and online sources are much easier to use.

40
The book "Real-World Programming for OS/2 2.11" is a great source if you learn better from books.

I found VAC 3.0.8 to be better for building most old OS/2 programs than VAC 3.6.5. Really either is fine. If I was better at C++, I'd prefer GCC.

Applications / Re: Panorama Maximum Resolution
« on: December 20, 2023, 03:16:08 pm »
I've been using 3840x2160 on most of my computers for about a year.

Connection: DisplayPort
Monitor: LG 30 inch monitor
Computers: Lenovo desktop and laptop models

For laptops without DisplayPort, I use a Lenovo USB-c to DisplayPort adapter cable
To see a list of supported resolutions, use panoutil -i

Supported resolutions are the result of a negotiation between BIOS and the monitor (and your graphics card, if you have one; I haven't used one for a long, long time)

We may want to survey monitors and list their capabilities in the OS/2 World Wiki.

I know a lot of people here are like me and have never really used Windows. If you say like Windows 95, it is not clear to me what you are referring to.

One think I'd like is for the password widget to have a button to show/hide the password.

Virtualization / Re: ATof - Usage - Programmer's IDEs and Editors

I found Visual Slickedit to be superior to Visual Studio years ago, even on Windows. Now Visual Studio supports languages that ArcaOS doesn't, but that still isn't relevant. Notepad++ and Visual Studio are likely lacking features to support OS/2 and the Workplace Shell.

Hardware / Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T14s 1st Gen - 20T1
« on: December 07, 2023, 02:48:25 pm »
My experience with Lenovo Thinkpad T14 was that it had an RJ45 Ethernet port. Perhaps all models do not have it. I had it before ArcaOS 5.1 came out, but after all the betas expired, so I did not take a testlog.

45
I suggest that you post the entire testlog. It has other interesting information.
