Applications / Re: Using a scanner with hplip?
« on: April 19, 2019, 08:22:47 pm »
Hi ivan

Yes, definitely a "win printer" - most cheap inkjets are - but that is why we have cups, Thanks to Paul, Silvan, Alex and others involved in porting the software needed.

So, No problems with getting this printing using the current rpm installed cups/hplip/other bits involved.

In fact, had the printer working with ArcaOS long before I could get it installed in WindowsXP running in VirtualPC or Windows7 running in VirtualBox - the HP Installer/Setup craps out and fails to complete install/setup. Having tested with Windows7 32bit on real hardware where there is no problem I can only guess that running in a virtual machine screws up the HP Installer.

I found where the driver pack had been extracted to in WindowsXP and managed to get most of the driver side installed - can now print but trying to scan results in a "no scanner found" message. Not really needed but nice if I can eventually get it to work.

As for scanning via browser interface Please see response to Doug - Basically I dislike automatic updates.

Regards

Pete

Hi Doug

Scanning from the browser interface requires "web services" to be enabled which means automatic updates whether you want them of not. I think I would rather leave that disabled than suddenly find 1 day that printing does not work any more due to an irreversible update. However, if all else fails...

Applications / Using a scanner with hplip?
« on: April 19, 2019, 05:00:33 am »
Hi All

Had my Canon MG7550 pack up and decided to replace rather than repair.

As HP seem to be well supported by cups with hplip I settled on a HP Envy 6234 "all in one".
I then discovered that I needed a later build of hplip than was available from the ecups wiki... However, Paul is looking into building an update at the moment.

I did discover that a suitable version of hplip is available as an rpm and having already installed cups from rpm on my laptop I soon had a cups test page printed followed by some output from OpenOffice.

Great! Printing working, now for the question: Anybody using a scanner with hplip? - I see the rpm hplip has the scanner support files and am looking for advice/instructions on how to get this working; ideally with Tame/2 but just from the command line would be a start.

Hardware / Re: Another odd request

Hi Olafur

No idea how it compares with the Logitech "marble mouse" but it works fine on a monitor running at 1920 * 1080 - I know this for sure as otherwise my Mrs would tell me all about it  ;-)

Checking the mouse settings I see that Tracking is cranked up all the way - not the fastest pointer but very acceptable I think, compares well with the identical trackball on my 1280 * 1024 monitor.

Hi ivan

I could suggest the Logitech M570 which, if shopped for carefully, only costs about half an arm eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Logitech-M570-910-002090-Wireless-Trackball/113893903

It costs more when buying direct from Logitech https://www.logitech.com/en-gb/product/wireless-trackball-m570

I have 2 of these and they are lovely to use *but* on checking the ball size it is not quite as large as you would like at approximately 35mm. Might be worth a look....

Hi ivan

Have you considered using a wireless mouse and keyboard with a "unifier" receiver - eg https://www.logitech.com/en-gb/product/11052?crid=1759 - rather than a "USB 2.0 Y cable for keyboard and mouse"?

Makes for a neater desktop  :-)

Setup & Installation / Re: ecomstation.com back online

Hi Andreas

I think it would be handy if news.ecomstation worked - probably more bugs and fixes in the news groups than in the bug tracker  :-)

Networking / Re: Looking for driver for Intel 5100 8086:4232

Hi Martin

Yes, as I understand it it overwrites an existing nic entry with the data necessary to allow genmac to work with the new nic.

Hi Eugene

Martins url - ftp://genmac:unsupported@ftp.os2voice.org/ - works for me.

Might be worth trying again - maybe the server had a glitch.

Hi Ibrahim

The driver you need is in this package ftp://genmac@ftp.os2voice.org/GenMU_INTEL_WIFI-0-4-9.wpi

However, looking at the W8086x4232.nif file I see you will need to make some changes as the W8086x4232.nif file references the older driver files NETW4X32.SYS and NETW4X32.REG but supplies the later driver files NETW5X32.SYS and NETW5X32.REG.

So, you will need to change both mentions of NETW4X32 to NETW5X32 in the W8086x4232.nif file.

Also, looking at the  patch.dat file included it is different to the patch.dat file I have for my Intel 5100 8086:4232 using the NETW5X32 drive files so the patch data is probably for the NETW4X32 drivers.

I have attached the patch.dat file that I know works.

Hopefully Doug, who usually takes care of the genmac driver file packages, will read this and double check the package.

Hi Lars

This is the helpmgr.dll supplied with latest NewView

[M:\SYS\DLL]bldlevel helpmgr.dll.NEW
Build Level Display Facility Version 6.12.675 Sep 25 2001
(C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1993-2001

Revision:        1.09.1

Description:     NewView

[M:\SYS\DLL]

This is the older helpmgr.dll that works OK

[M:\SYS\DLL]bldlevel helpmgr.dll.WORKING

This is a test version just installed that seems to work OK

[M:\SYS\DLL]bldlevel helpmgr.dll
Build Level Display Facility Version 6.12.675 Sep 25 2001

Revision:        1.09.1
File Version:    1.9
Description:     NewView

[M:\SYS\DLL]

Seems they are the same bldlevel.

DIR shows

30-03-19  3:20p        48,569    225 a---  helpmgr.dll
 3-03-19  2:13p        47,937      0 a---  helpmgr.dll.NEW
17-08-05 11:44a        50,132    233 a---  HelpMgr.dll.WORKING

The helpmgr.dll currently under test comes from a package called helpmgr_dll-nofarcalls-shl-20190330.zip and I suspect the filename gives an indication of the difference. Seems to work fine - so far.

Applications / Re: nguest2.exe (netop) fails to start
« on: March 31, 2019, 06:55:40 am »
Hi Dave

The netop apps are gui apps and use helpmgr.dll in some way as it is shown in PMDll.

I am not sure but think helpmgr.dll is the "system hook" for newview.exe when newview is used as a replacement for iBMs view.exe hence it gets loaded by pmshell.exe during startup.

Hi Dave

If I unlock and delete helpmgr.dll then during the necessary following reboot I see this message:-

The system cannot find the file HELPMGR specified
in the PROTSHELL statement on line 105 of the CONFIG.SYS file.
Line 105 is ignored.
The system is stopped.  Correct the preceding error and
restart the system.

Line 105 is
   PROTSHELL=M:\OS2\PMSHELL.EXE

Ummm...  not sure how to get around that apart from putting helpmgr.dll back in place.

I have installed the latest NewView, 2.19.5, to eCS2.2b2 and, following a reboot, I can report that the helpmgr.dll file included with the latest NewView causes exactly the same problem - no netop applications will start, all deliver SYS3175.

Replacing helpmgr.dll with the earlier release resolves that problem.

Pete
