Setup & Installation / Re: VirtualBox and Warpin (wic.exe)

I suggest extracting all the files, replacing what you want, then assemble all the files.

Check the license file to see if you can publish your WarpIN package. You might be making this for your own purposes, but if you can get others to use your package, it will help you find any bugs sooner.

Internet / Re: PMMail - corrupted folders?
« on: December 09, 2021, 03:27:42 pm »
I build PMMail for release and maintain the website. http://pmmail.os2voice.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

Go to the website, or to Hobbes, and click on the link to download it.

I don't use PMMail except to test it, so I have not seen the behavior you describe. If what is in PMMail does not match what you have on disk, re-index the folder. If that fails, you might get a better error message.

Setup & Installation / Re: Making of bootable USB stick, or CD - how to?
« on: November 21, 2021, 04:26:40 pm »
I actually edit the ArcaOS DVD and put in my utilities. That way I can add DLL to a directory on the libpath.

One thing to watch out for is LVM. If you are on an old system without LVM, the BootAble program is a better way to make a bootable CD. Of course most systems without LVM also do not support booting from CD. I did have a utility diskette long ago for those systems. Create utility diskettes would make Diskette 3, and it was mostly empty, and was a great place to start.

According to https://www.bitwiseworks.com it was available on Nov. 4.

Someone should tell OS/2 World about it. It deserves to be promoted.

Did you guys who have it installed verify the bug Matthias Seidel asked about?

I haven't seen a build of OpenOffice 4.1.11 yet. I do not have a system set up to do AOO builds.

Thanks for sharing photos of the meeting. I think it was good of you to run a user group meeting in person, even with COVID rules and such.

I'm involved with both a local user group and the Warpstock meeting, and I know demand for an in-person OS/2 meeting is limited, but I like to think we will still do some in the future.

I live in an agricultural part of California, so the picture of German food made me laugh a little bit. :)

Hardware / Re: Display-port and HDMI
« on: October 28, 2021, 03:33:23 pm »
DisplayPort works and is preferred.

But as usual with OS/2 it depends on what the BIOS offers. I talk about Panorama as SNAP only supports very old hardware. Usually the BIOS scans on which connector which monitor is attached and makes some decisions. Means if you have a monitor attached on DisplayPort it uses it. If you have a monitor attached at HDMI BIOS uses it. If there are monitors attached to both interfaces usually DP is preferred. There are also some settings in BIOS which affect which interface should be preferred and used. This is all done long before any driver (gengradd) is involved. So boot up (cold boot) after all cables are in place. Don't expect switching between interfaces on the fly with CTRL-ALT-DEL only.

Usually DisplayPort supports all resolutions while on older systems HDMI is not able to support f.i. 4k/60Hz even when the graphic chip can do it.

Another question is - will the BIOS offer the capabilities it detects from the interface, the monitor and the graphic chip in a form Panorama can use it? It depends. I've a system with build in Intel graphic and DP, HDMI and analog interfaces. It can handle 4k / 60Hz on DP and Win can use it. On HDMI only 4k / 30Hz is possible as HDMI at that time could not handle the necessary bandwidth and the BIOS knew this. Of course these modes work in Win. But the BIOS does not offer these capabilities in a form Panorama can use it. No more than WQHD was possible. So I had to install a PCIe graphic card with an integrated BIOS which does it right. DP works fine on this.

This agrees with my experience. I have many systems with DisplayPort, and all work as well as the VGA. Sometimes there is an additional resolution available with DisplayPort. But my monitor is inadequate to test the higher than HD resolutions.

Your information also suggests that Ctrl-Alt-Del will find new resolutions in a future ArcaOS system that supports UEFI. This needs to be tested, of course.

Hardware / Re: OS/2 Video Performance
« on: October 24, 2021, 03:47:32 pm »

And on that very point, you started this thread with a specific assumption that SNAP would not be used, and so you arrived at some results that clearly put the 'Intel HDA Graphics' in the lead...but isn't that the VERY definition of BIAS???

I agree that HDA does well in SysBench DIVE measurements. I have run SNAP measurements for a long time, and unless the graphics card is 15 years old, they are never far from Panorama. For some systems, there are performance issues with SNAP, but the Arca Noae version seems to solve them. I've gotten used to all the goodies that come with Panorama, so I don't give SNAP much attention.

But if you do have one of those old graphics cards that support SNAP, I agree that things are pretty rosy. I used to sell only systems with SNAP graphics accelerated support. You can count me as a fan. But with systems that only have SNAP accelerated support, I'm going to assume Arca Noae version of SNAP will be about the same as Panorama.

Hardware / Re: OS/2 Video Performance
« on: October 23, 2021, 04:30:02 pm »
I think a lot of newer graphics stuff, Mozilla and QT, don't use PM for graphics. We could use a better benchmark.

Be careful of confirmation bias; where you have a card that has better PM graphics so that must be what is important. OS/2 programs are old, and I suspect that your old graphics card works just as well as newer HDA graphics, and that all that extra speed is wasted. My reason for starting this thread was to remove the obstacle of using old hardware to get good graphics performance. I wanted to make it easier for people to select a good graphics platform to run OS/2.

This is going to change again with ArcaOS 5.1, which will have some new graphics features to replace some BIOS functions that are no longer there.

Hardware / OS/2 Video Performance
« on: October 21, 2021, 01:47:28 am »
People ask me what video card to buy to run OS/2. I usually tell them to run the graphics built into the motherboard. For some time, Intel CPU have graphics built in. This is an inherently better design than having a separate video card.

I ran the SysBench benchmark program on my Quebopeep (Lenovo M93p Tower computer) with Intel Core-i7 CPU connected to the monitor with a standard VGA cable. I installed the standard AMD Radeon HD8490 PCIe-16 video card with 1 GB video RAM. The graphics card has no VGA, but I used a DisplayPort to VGA adapter to connect the monitor. Here is how the two graphics setups compared.

Intel HDA Graphics
PM Graphics Marks: 268
DIVE Marks: 18062

AMD Radeon HD8490
PM Graphics Marks: 127
DIVE Marks: 2917

So you can see that the high performance video card is between 2 and 6 times slower than the built-in graphics on the motherboard.

Setup & Installation / Re: YUM default platform setting
« on: October 19, 2021, 03:33:08 pm »
You have to upgrade carefully this time with yum. I'm waiting for instructions from Arca Noae or BitWise how to do it.

One of the upgrade steps changes your platform from i686 to pentium4.

Applications / Re: Otter Browser
« on: October 13, 2021, 05:03:43 am »
I think Otter is not really supported on Ubuntu. It does have a setting to remember passwords, and I was able to import bookmarks. I think those were my main requirements for moving on from Firefox. I hope most of the web applications suites run, particularly iCloud.

Applications / Otter Browser
« on: October 12, 2021, 09:40:57 pm »
I set up Otter Browser under Ubuntu, and I was able to import my bookmarks from Firefox. So far, so good.

Where I ran into trouble, though, was that I cannot visit any secure sites. Now Otter under Ubuntu is not the same as under ArcaOS, but I think the architecture of secure web browsing should be similar. Is anyone familiar enough with running applications under Ubuntu to help me get secure web browsing to work?

Here is the error: Warning: Otter Browser. SSL support is not available or incomplete. Some websites may work incorrectly or do not work at all.

I am not familiar enough with Ubuntu to correct this.

All of Blonde Guy computers have their software installed in this way. I wrote Suntan Special to do the job. I have over 700 objects I can install.
