I believe the Presentation Manager was introduced in OS/2 1.1, only 16bit with an interface similar to Win 3.x (it actually came first) with a Program Manager that was more advanced then Win3.x as windows could be independent of the parent and a file manager.
You can re-experience the experience by backing up your desktop and running (from a maintenance partition or such)
Code: [Select]
MAKEINI OS2.INI OS2_13.RCOS/2 2.0 Introduced the 32 bit Presentation Manager though it took a while to go fully 32 bit, along with the WPS.
Probably what you have is a primitive version of MMOS2

You should probably define "Presentation Manager".

Didn't OS/2 1.2 have Presentation Manager?

My OS/2 2.11 has a couple of floppy disks labeled "Multimedia Presentation Manager".

Was Presentation Manager in OS/2 Warp Version 3 the same thing?

Dave

Hi Dave.

As far as I know Presentation Manager was included on OS/2 1.1 and the version that we have today on Warp 4.52/eComStation is the evolution of that component. Presentation Manager is the GUI of OS/2 (not to be confused with the Workplace Shell which is the "Desktop Environment" that was included since Warp 3 (If I recall correctly) ).

I think that your disks on OS2 2.1.1 labeled as "Multimedia Presentation Manager" is what we also know MMPM/2 which is all the multimedia software that runs (in part) over PM. MMPM/2 is not a vital component of OS/2 if you don't need sound/video support. But PM is vital if you want to have a GUI on the OS.

Everybody is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong.

As far as I know the WPS was introduced with OS/2 2.0.

Thanks for the correction Dave.

Returning to the subject, yesterday I updated the page an separated the files from PM and Open32, and created a new "component page" for it.
I know that it may be hard to draw the line on which file belong to which OS/2 component sometime, but the idea is to have the closer interpretation than we can.

So, you are all welcome to discuss if I'm missing any file or improve the file description of that PM page on EDM/2.

Wouldn't PMSPOOL.DLL be the support for the printer spool?
PMBIDI.DLL looks to be part of the BIDI (bi-directional text support for languages like Hebrew) and
PMVDMH.DLL may be the support for seemless Winos2.

Thanks Dave. I added the description. I will see if I can separate the Win16 and Spooler files from PM later when I improve the EDM/2 components category.

Thinking about it, maybe some of these DLLs such as PMSPOOL are more part of the WPS. Back when I only had 4MBs of ram and used alternative shells such as Filebar instead of the WPS, they all implemented their own printer spool.

Thanks for your help.

Now I'm putting PM to the rest, until any other comments arise, and and I'm moving on to SOM.

I'm listing the SOM (and DSOM) files here: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files

Any comments on files descriptions, missing or that should not be there are welcome.

Presentation Manager (PM) is the window management component of OS/2 - mainly window handling and related.

MMOS/2 (or MMPM/2, Multimedia Presentation Manager/2) was/is the multimedia component - video and audio. Currently OS/2 and eCS work on the Warp 4.52 version of Presentation Manager to show the desktop and all its windows.

IIRC, OS/2 had a Presentation Manager also in its 1.2 release, much different from the 2.0+ releases in code, features and appearance (OS/2 1.2 shares much code with the older versions of Windows NT/2000, to the extent that many character mode OS/2 applications run flawlessly under NT/2000).

Hi

I'm wondering if OS2\ETC\WPDSERV.IR and \OS2\ETC\WPSH.IR should be part of SOM or WPS ?

Hi Mentore

The reason that OS/2 code up to OS/2 1.3 works on NT/2000 is the OS/2 subsystem those operating systems contain. Remember that M$ were very involved in OS/2 up to and including 1.3 so I guess it was to their benefit that their early OS/2 apps could run on Windows NT/2000.

It seems that is getting hard to get details on SOM.

I'm still trying to find some description for some SOM files: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files

Any feedback is welcome.

All true AFAICR. The IBM staff completely rewrote the window management after the IBM / MS split. IIRC, they also switched the pure PM programming interface from FAR PASCAL call scheme to C call scheme (indeed I saw many FAR PASCAL calls in Windows code some year ago, for and old Win16 program ported on Win32).

Hi

I run into some files that I don't know exactly if they are part of any of the categories I set up on the EDM/2 Components Category: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components

I have this files:
- SVGADATA.PMI
- SVGA.EXE
- DISPLAY.DLL
- BVHSVGA.DLL

For what I read this are part of the Video System for OS/2 (Base Video Handler and screen resolution). I don't know it will be good to create a category "Video System" for this files or put them under any of the categories I already created. What do you think?

I think that you should create a new category "video subsystem" with a sub-category "GRADD" or such. You're eventually going to have to create similar for MMOS2, networking etc.
