Applications / Iced tea
2012.07.22, 14:23:02
I'm trying out the new plugin for java. First try out for me was my work website where they use a java app for different types of administration. However there is a known problem with this program and java 6,  a problem that I experience in Windows as well as now in eCS. The problem show itself as a login error and the recomended way to deal with it is to go to the java control panel and disable "save temporary files on the computer".

My question now is: do anyone know how to reach the control panel in openjdk6? Or could it be done by some command line parameter?

Mail-News / PMMail - Secure transfer setup
2012.06.08, 13:23:49
I intend to begin to use PMMail again and I'm trying to set up Secure transfer. For one account there is no trouble, but if you got several accounts needing secure transfer it complains that the local port (e.g. 110) already exists in another account. The help pages suggest another way of setting up several accounts and in the same time keep the original (nonsecured) account setting. My problem is that I don't really understand the instructions :-). Is there someone using PMMAil that could give me a hand?

Networking / Samba, Android phones & eCS
2012.05.18, 00:20:02
Just a tip. Some of you have already thought of this and some not. I am new to Android phones, and since some weeks have a quite cheap Samsung Galaxy Mini. At the moment USB connection doesn't work with eCS and I don't dare to add LVM info to the phone and SDcard. This may make it work or not work at all.

However there are free Samba Client programs, where I found AndSMB to work nicely. So I shared my picture and music directory on my computer with Samba server and the set up the Samba Client on Android to download to the proper directory on the phone. This worked very well and smooth, transfer speed was about 800kB/s which is really good I think.

There is also a Samba server available but then your phone has to be "rooted". I found that a bit complicated and risky so I skipped it. I also tried AndFtp which also work fine!

By the way I also tried Print Bot (price about 3 euro), which supports a lot of printers and protocols. Now printing to my lpr printer.

I have a Thinkpad T43 (2669-83G), max lcd display resolution is 1024*768. Now I bought a second-hand T43 (2668-84G) as a spare part computer and found out it had a display allowing 1400*1050 px which I want to use. In both computers there is an ATI X300 supported by SNAP.

However, while the higher resolutions can be used in Windows and in eCS with Panorama, SNAP doesn't make it. Instead I just get a bigger desktop out of the boundaries of the screen. Someone who recognize the problem??

I found this site today about spotify clones, http://despotify.se/. If you scroll down you'll come to Jotify which is said to be written in pure Java. To judge from the screenshot it also looks really good. However I have searched around the web and it seems impossible to find the project or the files. I've written to the developer - hoping for an answer. Someone knows about this project? They also offer a sourcecode, http://despotify.se/source-code/ , for Despotify (which Jotify seems to have made use of). Could this source code be used by our platform to make a port? The site also mention criticism against them, however I have hard to see legal restrictions - you have to buy a premium Spotify subscription to use it.

I used VPC5.1 for some years ago (on eCS2.0 or some RC I don't remember). Now I installed on eCS2.1. I'm running XP SP3 inside with guest additions. Works fine, until I try to connect to the Internet. Exactly at the moment FF or IE is announcing "Connectin..." VPC freezes and eCS CPU meter goes up to 99,9%. I can kill VPC by pressing Ctrl+Enter and waiting for the "kill" message or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and killing with CAD. After that my mouse pointer is not visible, but it is there and can be used (although this is a little hard...). I have to reboot to get it back.

If I disable radio in XWlan the freeze does not happen. I use NAT (virtual switch make wlan to not work). Network wlancard is Intel 2200 BG (GenMAc driver). I have about 1,5GB RAM and 400GB is dedicated to VPC.

Vbox shows no such issues at all.

Do someone have an idea of what might be happening?

Internet / Firefox 6, 8 and 9
2012.01.21, 01:41:03
I have had some crashes on the above mentioned browsers. I thought it was due to other things, but now I have found out that it depends on  the browser (as it seems). If I try to enter this site: http://www.kjell.com/ the browser immediately crashes and there are other sites to. If I deselect javascript the site passes. Sometimes it crashes on more and more sites, even os2world.com. Now I have found out that firefox 4.0.1 works without trouble. Does anyone recognize this problem?

Mail-News / Calendar for Thunderbird 6
2011.09.08, 10:40:39
FF and TB 6.02 are out. I have waited to upgrade TB as there hasn't been any up-to-date Lightning (the calendar extension). Now I found "Reminder Fox", which is another calendar extension - feature reach, nice and importing *.ics- files. Just a tip!

Utilities / A "drop-box" tip
2011.06.08, 10:25:25
I've wondered how to easy transfer files to my ftp-server and use it like a drop-box. Tried with netdrive, but with various success. There is probably several easy solutions, but today I found my. In the templates folder >>Internet Templates, there is an object I never noticed before, called "FTP Host". Just dragged one to my desktop and filled in host, remote directory, username etc. Now I can just drop a file on it and its transferred to the proper place. Nice and easy!

Applications / Dynamic DNS update
2011.05.23, 20:41:57
I have a server, running on eCS connected to the domain name elfonnet.nu. I can see there is quite a lot of dns-updaters, but all seems linked to e.g. Dyndns.com, noIP etc. Does that mean I have to have one of the free domain names from those providers to make these updaters work or is there some way to update my own domain? My ISP recommend several programs for Windows connecting directly to them (eg dnser) as there is an editable config file to direct the program where you want. Do someone know of similar programs for eCS-OS2?

Multimedia / Uniaud troubles
2010.12.01, 00:40:03
I have a Thinkpad T43p, which has a SoundMax sound card. So far I have been using the driver provided by IBM. I'm now using /SMP /APIC as parameters for ACPI  , a tip I read about making my T43p (not SMP) to not use the same irq on all devices, which it otherwise does. This change made the SoundMax driver stop working, but not Uniaud. However although its working I have problems.

Playing audios via WPS or PM123 seems to work always. Playing videos via eg KMP or VLC do work only if audios not have been played before. KMP eg reports "can't open audio device". It seems as uniaud sticks to those apps or the opposite. This was not the case with SoundMax. I've tried Uniaud before and this has always been an issue.

Do someone recognise the problem? Is there any way to release the sound card?

Native . .. .

Tried the new native printing support - which seems to work very well here. The firefox 4 builds are also an overall enjoyment to use: plain nice interface and very fast rendering.

Scores 1320 on peacekeaper compared to  FF 3.6.10  795 on the same computer.

Check out this link:

http://www.ecomstation.it/ecsoft2/prog.php?progid=1608&name=Arora&sys=os2+ecomstation

A test version as far as I understand, but already well working, relly fast rendering. Hits FF364 measured on Peacekeaper, http://service.futuremark.com/peacekeeper/index.action

FF364: 1100
Arora: 1500

As I understandit is based on Google code, but I'm not shure. Try it!

Earlier described installs in this forum on Acer One A150 has been made by cloning. Today I managed to do it by my USB-CD (probably this has been possible on the RC:s also). Maybee it apply to other netbooks also.

Thing is it halts with messages of disklayout and SYS-messages and then halt. Ctrl-Alt-Del, doesn't make it proceed. (see bugreports here http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2294).

But if you pull out the cord to the USB-CD before you press Ctrl-Alt-Del, and the reinsert it, install proceed very nice  You have to remember to pull the UsbCd out on every reboot and then put it in again when eCS has begun booting.  Install was except these problems, made without a glitch.

Rich Walsh. .. .

this build is a happy experience, feels quite a lot more quick rendering. A boost in speed compared to 3.5.4 measured on peacekeaper:  http://service.futuremark.com/peacekeeper/index.action  .

Two years ago I asked Paul Smedley about the possibility to port Avidemux, http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/, to eCS. One of the problems he then mentioned was the lack of a QT4-port. Now that this is real I put the same question to Silvan.  He answered this: "yes i think it could be doable. the only problem i see are the needed libs. not all of them have a recent port, so this would also need some work."

Then I also saw an even more interesting alternative at http://kdenlive.org/ , also based on QT4, which adds advance features, as to edit video on a timeline. From the compilation instructions, (which I don't understand myself), I paste:

General libraries

    * Qt 4 and KDE 4 development files (libqt4-dev and kdelibs5-dev)
    * SDL (libsdl1.2-dev, libsdl-image1.2-dev)
    * libXML2 (libxml2, libxml2-dev)

Screen capture

    * recordmydesktop

Firewire and DV capture

    * dvgrab
    * libdv (libdv, libdv-dev)

Audio and video codecs

    * x264 codecs (x264, libx264, libx264-dev)
    * Theora codecs (libtheora, libtheora-dev)
    * Xvid codecs (libxvidcore4, libxvidcore4-dev)
    * OGG (libogg, libogg-dev)
    * Vorbis (libvorbis, libvorbis-dev)
    * Dirac lossless codec (libschroedinger, libschroedinger-dev)
    * Lame audio codec (libmp3lame, libmp3lame-dev)
    * Libquicktime (libquicktime1, libquicktime-dev)
    * faac codecs (libfaac, libfaac-dev)
    * faad codecs (libfaad, libfaad-dev)
    * GSM (libgsm, libgsm-dev)
    * speech codecs (libamrnb3, libamrnb3-dev, libamrwb3, libamrwb-dev)

Sound processing and effects

    * libsamplerate (libsamplerate, libsamplerate-dev)
    * libJack (libjack-dev)
    * SOX (sox, libsox, libsox-dev)
    * ladspa (ladspa-sdk)
    * ladspa plugins (swh-plugins)
    * libmad (libmad-dev)

Video effects and image processing

    * frei0r, libfrei0r-dev video effects

    * gdk-pixbuf, gdk-pixbuf-dev
    * libpango1.0-dev

Performance

    * yasm modular assembler (strongly recommended for H.264 decoding)

Warning

MLT relies on FFmpeg compilation parameters. If your distribution ships with an outdated FFmpeg version, it may not be able to use the audio and video codecs like H.264 or AVCHD. In this case, recompile FFmpeg with all needed options or ask FFmpeg packager to upgrade.

eCS-OS/2 community lacks video editing software: This is two examples of QT4-based editors. Avidemux seems possible to port. The latest, Kdenlive, is the more interesting in my opinion. Is this also possible to port? Do someone know other QT4-based video editors?
