Where to get USBSTOR.EXE?

I have been waiting EBay for the last few months and finally got a (well a few) copy of OS/2. For $25 I got 2, 2.1 Upgrade, Warp 3 Upgrade, and Warp 4 on CD.

I installed Warp 4 on my IBM PC 350 (P200MMX,64MB RAM, 2GB HDD,CD-ROM) in hopes that I could at least use it for AIM. I have been having trouble with USB Flash Drives, which I really need to get files onto it.I tried the CWUSB Drivers without success, and spent the rest of my day yesterday trying to get it working. I stumbled upon: http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=usbdrvs just before going to bed, and this morning I see that the USBSTOR driver I need is a dead link and google turned up nothing. Does anyone have a copy of this driver or is there a way for me to get it?

Pete

Hi

That sounds like the IBM update package for USB drives. If I'm right I doubt you will find it available for download easily as it was restricted to Software Choice/Passport Advantage customers and not freely available.

Probably your only way of legally obtaining the required updates - plus all others - is to purchase an Upgrade form Warp4 to eComStation 1.2R here  http://shop.mensys.nl/cgi-bin/db2www/mns_art2.d2w/report?catname=eComStation#List

So OS/2 Warp 4 has no USB Mass Storage Support? I find that hard to believe. I've used Flash Drives with MS-DOS. I'm not going to pay for an upgrade, I just bought the OS and it has nothing working, why put more money in?

So if the IBM Driver is not freely available, is there an alternative?

DougB

QuoteI've used Flash Drives with MS-DOS.

I would be interested to know how you did that. AFAIK, there is no USB support for native MS, or IBM, DOS. I believe that DR-DOS does have some USB support.

For warp 4, you do need the latest available updates, to have any hope of using a modern Flash drive. The CWUSB package is also a possibility, but, in both cases, you will, probably, be restricted to using devices from the late 20th century, and not all of them will work. The newer USB support, that actually works, is available only for eComStation.

QuoteI just bought the OS and it has nothing working, why put more money in?

You just bought an antique, that will actually work quite well, with a bit of tweaking, but it has little support for anything from the 21st century. On the other hand, if you can locate newer device drivers, most of them will work with warp 4.

The CWUSB driver is the alternative, but the latest available (for warp 4), drivers are probably better, since CWUSB is older.

I guess the first question, that I have, is: Have you installed ALL of the software maintenance that is available?  I think you should be able to find most of it by following links at:
http://www.passtheshareware.com/os2.htm
along with some links to help pages etc. (Note, that this is not a complete list, but should get you started). Of course, the easy way to get OS/2 to work, is to purchase eComStation. Unfortunately, eCS doesn't have support for everything, simply because there aren't enough people working to do it, and manufacturers don't want to make their little secrets available, so people can make some things work properly (probably ashamed of the quality of their products).

Here is the USB Mass Storage Driver for DOS: http://www.pcxt-micro.com/dos-usb.html It has no Plug-N-Play, but it works well with most devices that I've tried.

I want to tweak, not spend money, that's pretty much a summary of how I feel toward eComStation.

I installed FixPak 15, what else should I get?

DougB

Thanks, I wasn't aware of USB support for DOS...

QuoteI want to tweak, not spend money, that's pretty much a summary of how I feel toward eComStation.

EComStation is well worth the money, but that is your choice. Perhaps, if you get to like warp4, you will be more inclined to spend a bit of money to upgrade, but, before you upgrade, there will be some things that will not work properly (even if you do upgrade, some things just won't work). Remember, that warp4 is 1996 vintage, and even with the updates, some things just aren't going to work.

QuoteI installed FixPak 15, what else should I get?

Well, I would start with the basics. there is a device driver update:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/patches/fixpack/warp_4/ddfp2.zip

The latest kernel may be a good idea:
http://www.os2site.com/sw/upgrades/kernel/w420050811.zip

The networking updates from:
http://www.os2site.com/sw/upgrades/mptn/index.html
Specifically, for warp 4, you need WR08423, followed by WR08425, or if you are a little more adventurous, you can update to the WRx8621 level (but don't do that, until you have the system running better - there are some special procedures, and it is an "unsupported" upgrade). You should also install The UN_980 update:
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v3.1os2andv4.0os2/universal/un_0980/

You may find something useful at:
http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=usbdrvs

It is also, highly, recommended to switch to the Dani drivers, for IDE, and SATA support:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/storage/danis506r185.zip
and:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/storage/daniatapi040.zip

If you plan to do things, like burn CDs, or DVDs, you should have the ASPI support:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/scsi/aspirb10.zip

WinOS2 can be updated to support some 32 bit windows 3.1 applications:
http://crydee.sai.msu.ru/ftproot/pub/comp/os/os2/leo/windows/win32sv125.zip

I am sure that I have missed some, but this is a start. Whether it will help to get your USB devices to work, or not, is unknown. If there are specific programs that you want, ask a specific question, and somebody might have an answer.

Fun500,

Download os2mt http://www.os2mt.tk/ and use it to update your copy of OS/2.  Be aware that there are a few odd things that are no longer available at the sites in the db but they are available elsewhere.

Ahem, related to using flash drives on W4... it may be that The CWUSB driver is sufficient, but this only apply when using FAT16 or HPFS. If FAT32 is on flash disk, then You also need partition filter and/or newer DASD manager (If You use newest Danielas DASD maneger do not use Danielas partition filter too) to Warp can recognise partition on flash drive, and also FAT32.IFS to Warp can use such partition for read/write.
You wasn't say, does extra drive letter appears when You attach flash ?

Also... You may find some usefull infos here:

My drives are FAT16, I mentioned I used them in MS-DOS, MS-DOS doesn't support FAT32.
A letter is there, but if I try to open the drive it says it can't be accessed.

Funny story, I need to access my USB Stick to install network drivers.

OK, there is more than one FAT16 flavour... You can try with format one of flashes with Format [drive letter]: /fs:fat under Warp, and then try using it ?
Also You can start dfsee in trial mode to got precise info about type of partition.

As before, I strongly recomend to install Dani's DASD manager replacement because IBM's DASD support only oldest FAT16.

Daniela's DASD here:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/storage/danidasd144.zip

And from Daniela's readme:

    - it supports FAT16X partitions (type 0E) exactly as big FAT16 (type 06)partitions.

To summarize the notion of acceptable partition types, have a look at this table:

       DASD manager      partition types supported
            extended   regular
       OS2DASD (pre-LVM):  05      01, 04, 06, 07
       OS2DASD (LVM):      05, 0F   01, 04, 06, 07, 35, [+ other]
       DaniDASD:      05, 0F, 8F   01, 04, 06, 07, 0B, 0C, 0E, [+ other]
