What chat client would be recommended if one have the needs to get proper support for MSN?

melf

I would say that the best client I've used is Jeti/2. It also seems to support voice chat now (Google Talk?) but I haven't tried that out. Psi, delivered with eCS is simpler but ok. Buddyspace is a third one which I haven't tried out but which seems to work. All three are jabber-clients.

Try http://www.mercury.im

latest version runs briliantly with the Java 1.5 trick posted elsewhere in the forum.

it support the most features of all clients I know ( including webcam and file sending )

Mercury is great and it works just fine with JDK 1.4.1 Golden Code. I have v 1.8 that has an OS/2 distribution. I don't have a link at hand but you can always google it.

Didn't know about this MSN client, but now trying. Found the 1.8 version here: http://www.andreas-peters.net/95-0-mercury-msn-messenger-v--1-8-0.html and it seems to work fine with innotek java also.

Hi "kimhav"; Re: "What chat client would be recommended if one have the needs to get proper support for MSN?". IBM Lotus SameTime has been reported to have been one of the market leaders in the corporate Instant Messaging space. While I am not quite sure what exactly you may be looking for in an "chat client"; perhaps, you can give it a try. Take a look at it here:

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/products/sametime/standard/

Hope this can be of use.

Good luck.  ;)

Well, I usually most of the time use ICQ but now all suddenly I have a bunch of French people that only uses MSN chat so I needed a client that supports or can bridge to that net.

PSI works fine under os2-eCS connecting MSN via jabber server.

I had also tested Pidgin, but it is not available for OS/2. That one is very nice to connect to several IM Service. Too bad we need a GTK+ port first to make it run on OS/2.

IBM Lotus Sametime Connect (the client) only runs on Windows, Linux and MacOS, it is made on eclipse, so to have a chance to make it run under OS/2 we need a newer java and an eclipse widget toolkit port first.

Hi "miturbide"; re: "IBM Lotus Sametime Connect (the client) only runs on Windows, Linux and MacOS, it is made on eclipse, so to have a chance to make it run under OS/2 we need a newer java and an eclipse widget toolkit port first....". I suppose this is where the "Bounty System" can kick in; but, where in the world are the Sponsors; and, very important - the "Bounty Hunters".  ::) to help meet users' needs like these?

Sab, I know you like to support the bounties, but when someone asks for a program to do something, you can be assured they are asking because they need it NOW, not "if ever". Please try to keep that in mind when reccomending some application like Sametime, that I will say, will never run under eCS (based upon current situation).

PSI does work well, but it can be a bit troublesome to find a jabber server that has all the right transports. I chose jabber.unoc.net because they have AIM/MSN transports, but it butchered my MSN list, it no longer exists, so be wary of using transports.

Never SayNever!

Hi "Saijin_Naib"; you wrote among other things; "Sab, I know you like to support the bounties, but when someone asks for a program to do something, you can be assured they are asking because they need it NOW, not "if ever". Please try to keep that in mind when recommending some application like Sametime that I will say, will never run under eCS (based upon current situation)..." You know "Saijin_Naib" a few months ago (don't know about anyone else but I can say for myself) The moment I read the Second Petition for IBM to Open-Source OS/2 I signed and must have been one of the first first fifty persons to do so; but, here we are - 3722 signatures after and the situation is the same. Reflecting on another bold move such as this by "Kim Haverblad" et al it is indeed inspiring actions like these that give the feeling that views like "if ever" are misnomers. After years of waiting... it is deeply felt that there must certainly be "something" that 3721 others (excluding myself) are looking forward to; and, per chance, there are a few real OS/2 Geeks out there who can prove me right in saying - Never Say Never with the port of an application such as Lotus SameTime being just a small slice of the cake it terms of what can be achieved by simple minded but dedicated folks within the OS/2 communities.  ;D

I signed the petition as well. There is nothing I would like more than for eCS OS/2 to be able to throw its shackles off and begin to evolve, but this isnt the case right now. My point was more or less that reccomending an application that does not yet exist is not terribly helpful, especially to someone who may be new and not know where to turn for other appropriate applications. If I saw that link when looking for a MSN client, I'd go there and then become terribly confused and a bit pissed that the link wasn't for what I was asking for. Just my perspective on it however.

I use Mercury and SIM, as they were mentioned above.

You can use Jabber clients (Jeti/2, PSI) too, with transfer servers added to your contact lists.

There are a small Firefox extension too: "XUL MSN"
http://msnmsgr.mozdev.org

And you can find lots of Jabber extensions for Firefox too at addons.mozilla org (XMPP and SamePlace extension).

Or there are web based solutions too:

http://www.meebo.com (I think, it's the best)

http://www.ebuddy.com/
http://iloveim.com/
http://www.communicationtube.com

etc.

You can use MSN via IRC too!!

The solution: Bitlbee

With an IRC client (eg. Chatzilla) go to irc://im.bitlbee.org and read the help how to add transport servers to your IRC account!
