Last Updated: 11th February, 1995

Symptoms

When running communications software through a Windows com program, OS/2 would not recognize modems at COM3.

Hardware

ZOOM FaxModem 28.8

Problem

According to IBM, OS/2 reserves IRQ 5 in its system setup for LPT2:. IRQ 5 is also used by COM3.

Procedure

Change com setting on modem to COM1 (best choice).

Notes

Nowhere in the Warp manual does it mention this. I have found that many internal modems come preset for COM3 or COM4. IBM was very helpful once I arrived at the correct phone number (not the 800 number listed in the customer support section)

For more information about this situation including alternative solutions, type one or both of the following commands from the OS/2 command line:

VIEW PERFBK "Understanding COM Ports"
VIEW CMDREF "COM.SYS"
