That currently available for OS / 2 is the second version (build 1.1) which contains some important fixes, as well as an installer, and some compiler optimizations that have reduced the size of the executable. The package now has a "weight" of 520KB .1 1 Mb against the previous version. To streamline the download I have removed the sources from distribution, but these are still available to anyone who requests it. I therefore welcome all who wish to participate to the Port of future versions of NUT.

NUT/2 is a program that allows navigation in the database of the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, the largest U.S. public resource for nutritional values. NUT/2 is based on version 12 of the USDA, released in January 1998 and consists of 5976 foods.

The program, originally written for Unix by Jim Jozwiak and now in version 4, providing an advisory text mode simple and intuitive mode, which I have kept in porting to OS/2, the wonderful operating system that I have installed on my PC.

That currently available for OS/2 is the second version (build 1.1) which contains some important fixes, as well as an installer, and some compiler optimizations that have reduced the size of the executable. The package now has a "weight" of 520KB .11 Mb against the previous version. To streamline the download I have removed the sources from distribution, but these are still available to anyone who requests it. I therefore welcome all who wish to participate to the Port of future versions of NUT.

Installation

The new build (1.1) is distributed with a simple program installation that provides to create the objects to the user desktop to launch the application whose icon is displayed below. The installation is written in Rexx and makes no changes to Config.sys or the INI system. Before you run the script you need to move the folder NUT/2 unpacked (with the-d switch to UnZip) in the path of the final disc in which you'll want to install the program.

Then you can use NUT / 2 without throwing sessions OS/2 window, since the simple click of the mouse will replace the manual operations from the command line. Below is an example of the folder created on the WPS setup.

To delete NUT/2 from your system, simply delete the object from the desk and remove the directory x:\NUT (where x: is the drive on which you installed the application.)

This is one of the menu NUT displayed in a window of OS/2 Warp 4.

NUT/2 allows you to:

  • Record and analyze meals based on calories.
  • Read access to the USDA database.
  • See the list of foods classified according to the composition in nutritional values.
  • Create your own diet with a fixed calorie level.

Some people have written asking for information about the introduction of new foods in the USDA database. NUT/2 (such as the original Unix version) does not modify the database. The modification of the database is done manually on the "foodfile" in ASCII format, which is attached to guide NUT/2.

Infos

NUT/2 Cardware and is protected by the GPL. NUT/2 was constructed using only free software, such as the GNU C Compiler and libraries attached. The executable therefore requires the EMX runtime, which is now very common and used by all the programs carried by Unix. Needless to say, the program is completely FREEWARE, and therefore does not require any registration to be used.

In addition to this installation does not require any changes to the CONFIG.SYS and the program is ready to be launched.

Bugs

Fixed the problems encountered by users who failed in the creation of Indexed Database because of a HOME variable in CONFIG.SYS.

The new version of NUT/2 is insensitive to this variable and requires no changes to variables in the Config.sys. I look obviously reports from users about any problems or malfunctions encountered, as well as suggestions for overcoming the same ;-)
