Engage Warped Net

A Warp user goes browsing for the best of the net.

by Scott Williams

It's 10:00 PM on a Tuesday night. I've been working all day and are ready for some relaxation. I fire up my Internet dialer and start my WebExplorer. Where am I going tonight? I'm not in the mood for the visit music related sites or TV show sites. Let's see what is new in the world of OS/2.

You may say, "are there any sites on the Web that dictated to the OS/2 user?" There are a multitude of sites on the Web if you look for them. Below is a list of some of the ones that I frequent.

1.The OS/2 Shareware BBS ([[1]]) - This site is setup by Peter Norloff and is the "Home of the Largest Collection of OS/2 Shareware and Freeware Programs and Information". Long time users of OS/2 have probably dialed into Peter's BBS before he made this presence on the Web. You are able to download a list of new files on the BBS from the page. If you are already a subscriber to the BBS, you and Telnet, virtual modem or C-Kermit to the BBS with the same access you had before. If you are not already a user on the BBS, you can subscribe on the Web. It also has links to other OS/2 sites, such as David Barnes' Home Page (see below for more details).

2.OS/2 Device Driver Repository ([[2]]) - If there is a device driver for OS/2, it is here. Run by IBM, it catalogs all known device drivers. The first stop when you get any new hardware.

3.WebExplorer Home Page ([[3]]) - I check here frequently for new news and updates to my favorite web browser. Here you will find links to the latest developments and changes in the WebExplorer, including stuff about Java.

4.Kris Kwilas' Unfinished Home Page ([[4]]) - The highlights of Kris's pages are the Highly Unofficial IBM OS/2 Beta FAQ (code named Merlin), a report on the 1996 IBM Technical Interchange, and the hilarious Windows 95: The Movie! link. The page also contains Kris' Favorite OS/2 applications, Indispensable Links, Useful Stuff, Interesting Information and a JPEG of his Warp Connect Desktop.

5.Stardock Systems ([[5]]) - I frequently check this site for new information on Object Desktop (see another article this issue) and Galactic Civilization 2 and Star Emperor. Updates are available at this site along with information on their other software packages.

6.David Barnes' Warped Gallery ([[6]])- This is one of the coolest OS/2 sites on the Web (as cool as Warp Online). Any serious OS/2 users has heard of David. His site contains bitmaps that he has generated, shareware, freeware and other links to OS/2 sites. This is a must see.

7.WebExplorer Animation Archive ([[7]]) - This site contains other animation that can be used instead of the boring computer animation that comes with the WebExplorer. You can samples the animation before you download them to your PC. When you sample the animation, they last until you hit another Web site that changes them. It also tells you how to create you own animation. If you are tired of the computer animation, this is the site to see.

8.InnoVal Home Page ([[8]]) - Since I use Post Road Mailer (PRM) and Post Road NewsReader (PRNR), I frequent this site a lot. It contains the latest code update and information for these product and other packages that are available or being developed by InnoVal. I download the latest beta and productions code for PRM and PRNR when they are available.

9.Team OS/2 Online ([[9]]) - This site's goal is to proved a one-stop source for OS/2 and Team OS/2 information. A list of Team OS/2 members is available for your browsing, a copy of the Team OS/2 Newsletters and FAQ are available. It also contains links to other OS/2 sites.

10.Indelible Blue ([[10]]) - Looking for OS/2 software? Indelible Blue is the place. This site contains an online catalog, specials, information on volume discounts, catalog ordering and the ever popular Ask Einstein column.

This is by no means a complete list. Visit your favorite Web search engine and search for OS/2. These sites, as well as the ones above, can provide you with a ton of OS/2 sites to visit. But be careful! You'll wind up staying up to 6 a.m. "surfing for OS/2".
