1. AC 97 Sound Drivers |
|
|
I'm about to upgrade my system, and the motherboard I've ordered has the built in Intel AC-97 sound chip. Has anyone out there been successful at getting this sound hardware working with OS/2? I've browsed through the device driver repository and the driver section at OS2.org and could not find any direct references to this type of sound hardware. |

I've got a GigaByte board with sounds chip from Intel and I have so far not been able to find any drivers. If the boards also have NIC integrated from Intel, the good news is that You would be able to kick that alive. I even found OS2 drivers on the CD provided for the NIC from GigaByte. //Kim |

Well, I've run into bigger problems. Now that I have my upgraded hardware put together, I can't seem to get OS/2 to install. The new pieces are: ECS K7S5A w/ onboard sound (ac97) and onboard LAN, Athlon t-bird 1ghz, 256mb pc2100 DDR ram, Western Digital 7200rpm ATA100 20 gb drive, Hercules 3d Prophet 4500 (64mb KyroII). In addition I've carried over a Seagate ATA33 6.4gb drive and a Seagate 1.6 gb drive from my old setup. My plan was to put OS/2 and Win2000 on the 20g drive and RedHat Linux on the 6.4g drive. First, I had to disable hardware detection in order for the setup disk to actually boot. fdisk had no problem seeing and partitioning the entire 20g drive. I get to the point where it finishes copying initial system files from the CD then prompts for disk 1. I put disk 1 in a: and press enter. The a: drive lights up and it freezes. It locks so hard that the power button won't work. Using another computer, I modified the config.sys files on the startup disks and remarked out the "set copyfromfloppy=1" line and tried the install again. It still tries to access a: at the same point and freezes. Only this time it does not prompt me to insert disk 1. So, I'm stumped and I can't get my favorite OS on my new computer. Argh! |

In the process of installing Win98, I did learn some things about the sound and lan hardware on this motherboard (For anyone out there interested in an ECS K7S5A motherboard). The board uses the SiS 735 chipset. This chipset has the SiS 635 sound integrated, which is supposed to be compatible with Intel's AC97 codec. (AC97 is the onboard sound spec introduced with the Intel i810 chipset) Hence all the references to AC97 in the documentation. Also integrated into the 735 chipset is the SiS 900 Fast Ethernet Network Interface. Of course, I wish I could actually get OS/2 installed. Then I'd be able to spend more time trying to get these items to work. I'm wondering if ECS would have the same problem installing. I've spent all my money on the hardware upgrades though |

Well, I wouldn't give to much hope about eCS wouls solve Your problems. Since it still is the same old OS2 with extra feautes. But, do you have url with some deep tech specs for the board You bought? //Kim |

Hmm.. guess that You are installing Warp 4.0, right? Hm.. have you deleted any drivers from the diskette 1 to get some space for your own drivers? I have had problem with installation and when needing some extra space on the installations diskettes I've deleted drivers I knew I wouldn't have any need for..... problem was that the installation still wanted to copy the files that I deleted and then the system died. //Kim |

Yes, I'm installing Warp 4. The only changes I've made to the install disk is updating the IDE DASD drivers. I don't think I had to delete anything when I updated those drivers. I seem to recall reading something on the support site for the motherboard about the latest bios update fixing a problem that causes the floppy drive to stop operating during the install for Win2000. Perhaps that problem is what I'm running into with Warp4 as well. I will try updating the bios and see if that solves the problem. |

Okey, have you tried to prepare a small partition, let say around 500mb to 1Gb just for the system and see how if you're able to install? Fully installed Warp 4 needs maximum around 160 - 200mb; so a 500Mb would do. Either You keep the C: then as a plain system drive and just add another D: drive for the applications. Or you can use Partition Magic to expand the installation partition to whatever size you need. Also in the BIOS disable all extra HW that You don't need during the installation. Disable Plug & Pray, Enable OS2 Memory support if You have this feature. Also if You have any extra PCI / ISA boards - remove them as well. When booting on the installation diskette, press Alt+F2 when you see the small white box (double cursor size) in the left corn and OS2. You'll then see what happends line for line in config.sys. //Kim //Kim //Kim |

I posted an update to my OS/2 install efforts in a new thread. My hardware issues are no longer centered around the sound hardware. So I posted a new message regarding the KyroII based graphics card which appears to be the source of my install problems. |
