Here's how to Get OS/2 and XP to talk via NetBIOS or NetBIOS over TCP/IP
.
.

TO USE NETBIOS WITH TCP/IP (OR NETBEUI AS MS INCORRECTLY CALLS IT):

Assuming you are using eCS v1.2MR and installed the default settings, you probably already have NetBIOS over TCP/IP installed and bound to a network adapter. If not, simply double-check and install if necessary. After that:

  • Ensure your DOMAIN NAME or WORKGROUP on the XP machine is the SAME as the one you are using under OS/2 or eCS (and I think needs to be in all CAPS)
  • Open the Registry Editor (if you dont know the shortcut key combo, use the RUN command or open a command window and type REGEDIT <ENTER>
  • Search for LMANNOUNCE (it will bring up multiple results - the one you are interested in is LMANNOUNCE with a value of 0 or 0x00000000
  • Change the value to 1 [I left the value type as HEX, which doesnt matter - it will change the value to 0x00000001 (1) which is what you need]
  • Exit RegEdit
  • Ensure if you are connecting to a Warp Server machine (or an eCS machine with Server installed) that you set up a user account on it for however you log in on your XP station.
  • Restart the XP machine.

You're done! The next time you log in (final step above), you should be able to browse your OS/2 resources and connect to them from the XP machine. The reverse is true for any XP shares enabled - you can browse and connect to them from your Warp machines.

TO USE NETBIOS WITHOUT TCP/IP:

Here's what's required:
  • The appropriate XP Install CD
OR
  • The VALUEADD directory from such a CD

Here's the steps:
  • Format the XP machine and install OS/2 or eComStation (JUST KIDDING!!!)

  • Read the NETBUI.TXT file from the XP CDROM:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI - and copy the two files it specifies into the two appropriate directories
  • Go into Networking, right click on your network adapter, and install protocol (NETBEUI).

NOTE 01: NETBIOS over TCP/IP (and the MS equivalent) is NOT necessary on either the OS/2 or the XP machine - contrary to popular belief. That belief was because trying to install NetBEUI from the XP CD does NOT work - unless you copy it's INF file to the Windows\INF directory AND copy the driver file to the Windows\System32\drivers directory. If you do NOT manually copy those files, XP will pretend to install the protocol but not copy the files to the correct Windows directories (and give NO errors), and your NetBIOS networking will not function even though everything is reporting it should.

NOTE 02: You may find that various printers connected to the OS/2 or eCS machine do not work using this method (or work sporadically). This will also cause what appears to be application hangs as the app tries to communicate with the printer. For whatever reason, most of the printing attempts I have tested seem to result in XP trying to use NetBEUI instead of NetBIOS for communication - even with the protocol disabled under XP. This is a bug I doubt they will ever fix.
