New QTpy from BWW Bitwise

Hi All,

I played around with the new Pyqt and tried to starts some programma's
And i have started several, for some i had to install some dependencies and had to build myself, and with BIG help from Silvan from  bww bitwise works GmbH

So if you wanted to see more apps like this, we need to support  bww bitwise works GmbH for there good work.

Hi Tellie.

Can you please explain a little bit more what is the benefit of PyQt? I'm reading that "PyQt is one of the two most popular Python bindings for the Qt cross-platform GUI/XML/SQL C++ framework".  But what would it means? that are there are potential of important application that can be easily ported to OS/2-eCS-ArcaOS with this framework?. The screenshots that you show look really cool.

About Qt in general terms I think it is very important for the platform today. I personally think/suggest that it should be supported as one of the preferred ways to create applications for ArcaOS and try to move away from other dead (unsupported) frameworks/APIs to use Qt instead.

I also think that Qt needs all the support that everyone can offer to keep it updated on this platform.

Python is a fairly simple high level language to learn and use but many OS/2 programmers are used to Rexx and the associated frameworks that, while unsupported, work fine. A recent example is the Arca Noae Package Manager. Could have been written in pyqt but Alex knows Rexx and the framework he used. With the shortage of programmers, they may well be more productive using what they know.

Another interesting Python binding is pycairo, https://www.cairographics.org/pycairo/, orientated more to GTK then QT but Cairo is a nice canvas with the best example on OS/2 being Firefox where all the drawing (except the frame) is done with Cairo.

Anyways it's nice to have these bindings as it allows more programs to be easily ported, though as you allude to, we're falling behind. No QT5, no Python 3, and limited resources.

I first posted a build of PyQt here back in 2012, then again in http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,703.0.html last year in relation to Electrum, a bitcoin wallet. I received little to no feedback then, so I'm not sure how much interest there is in this stuff.....

Hi Paul.

Maybe there is no interest on PyQt because the users don't know the potential of it. This is why I think it is important to show what application can be ported that uses PyQt to get more interest. In my case when I saw all the apps that Tellie ported, and the things that are also available for Qt on their community, that was when I started to get interest on the Qt framework and started to see it as an important thing.

But let's face it, it is also true that there is no much feedback on the community

In relation to Electrum, apologies, I thought I had posted my last update but obviously didn't checking that post.
It works but slowly on my OS/2 PC so I never tried it on the server. Went back to using Linux full client until the last
increase in oomph needed for bitcoin I gave up generating blocks, also gave up on keeping a client updated so it
became a non event for me

I have July off so I might revisit it, simply because if I can get it working on the server then it might be the
prompting I need to start using it and mine blocks again or not but wont know unless I look at it again
Block creation however isn't one of my high priorities at present.

Yes, there is no way to stimulate interest into OS/2, sad but true. Younger generations do not even know the system and they never tried it.
I suppose we all use and know alternative and new systems, but since we are old OS/2 users, we still have an eye of regard for it. This is not the same for youngest, most of them know only Windows, OSX, Linux and maybe Android.
Martin, about your "there is no much feedback", this is quite normal: everyone lives its times, and OS/2 users now are very few.
Patience, we will remain on amateur way.
For sure, after 30 years it is still alive/used and only this assertion say all!
